Listen a guy flirted with me once and I was like “sorry I’m married” while clearly flashing my wedding rings and dude was like “how’s that going?” Like get away from me. When the guys were advising that the girl should be more cutthroat when rejecting someone, Im glad Ashley brought up that rejection itself can be very scary for many girls because of the power imbalance. Whenever I see Korean & Japanese people talk about how "the West" is so different, they tend to mean the USA. This is weird to me, because here in Belgium (Europe, also West) we actually have several habits that are closer to e.g. Korea than to the USA. I appreciate how in your podcast, you actually name the countries, to be more specific.

I remember when I first crashed at my friend’s house, he’s a white guy, and it was a big culture shock haha. He uses a dish washer. The heck fam? I’ve been hand washing dishes for 27 years. You got your dirty shoes on in the house? Whose cleaning that up? Haha good times.

North American culture: “Look me in the eye when I’m talking to you” as a sign of respect/acknowledgement/paying attention/listening, because “looking away when I’m talking to you” is a sign of disrespect/evasion/dismissal/disagreement. So a kid looks an adult in the eye when being scolded. Asian culture: “Look down” as a sign of respect/submission/obedience to someone older/above you, because “looking eye-to-eye” can be confrontational/disrespectful. So a kid looks down when being scolded by an adult.

also for when BM was talking about going deeper to get people's attention. If you're talking with someone who is hard of hearing especially if it's on the phone- talking lower/deeper can actually be easier for them to hear instead of talking louder. I work in customer service on the phones and someone told me that one day and every time I get an older customer who can't hear well and I talk deeper/lower they can hear me better- it's not perfect all the time but it helps more often than not.

Thank you to Ashley for bringing up how scary it can be. I’m a small woman and one time I had to stop to get gas on my way home. It was at night and I live in a rural area so not many streetlights. I stopped to get gas and my baby was already fast asleep in the car. I was the only person outside and this guy stopped at the pump behind me to get gas. He starts saying “hey” and “hey cutie” and im doing my best to ignore him and pretend I don’t hear him. He starts to walk closer so I look at him which makes him stop walking and he’s like “hey your real cute. Can I get your number?” And I was like “thanks but im married” clearly flashing my wedding rings (which I had been doing since he started trying to get my attention) He had the audacity to say “how that going?” And I’m honestly speechless. Idk this guy and I’ve got my baby in the car. I just say it’s great and get the hell out of there.

I loooooove this gang! Them answering how to reject a guy respectfully is just on point. Girls should not worry about that. Guys if someone's not interested, move 👏 on 👏 Yes Peniel you are the best podcast in the world! I agree.

I'm from the south in the United States and I worked in France for a while. It was a huge culture shock. In the south, especially in black culture if you walk into a room without saying hello to everyone it's considered extremely rude and they will call you out on it. In public you nod and smile at strangers or you're being rude. The public transport I experienced in France was a lot like how they described Korea. It took me so long to stop smiling at strangers because I had been doing it my whole life. But also in France shop owners would think you're rude if you didn't say hello. It took some getting use to. This was just my experience though being in Paris for a year. I could 100% have a misunderstanding. If you're french and none of this is right pls correct me lol

Similar background to you (from the American south and lived in France). Only thing I’d disagree with is coming into a room and not greeting people. In France they wanted me to do the bises with literally everyone and that made me uncomfortable actually.

@@zub2425 Ah yeah I was mostly working so I can see how I would miss that type of interaction. Unless that happened to you in professional settings too?

I think the concept of respecting elders isn't hard for Westerners if the elder is a generation or more older. It's hard because the elder might be JUST ONE YEAR older.

Man the more I learn about Korea, I realise that I do love it but my personality no matter how much I would like adapt which I'm good at, I would feel uncomfortable

I'm from New Zealand and this is true! Houses are very close to each other and most people know everyone, people also say hi and can make convo with strangers in public. I'm an introvert so I can't do that, but 2 days ago I was in the store with my mum and she was talking to a lady about almond milk! I get astounded sometimes cause I HATE quick convo and things like that

In my country, everyone says hello to everyone even if we don't know each other, as Peniel said because we make eye contact, but I noticed that in the main main city they don't do it too much... I guess the crowded it is the less they need to interact all the time.

Some highlights of this episode (in my opinion): 2:00 I appreciate this disclaimer. Thank you Dive Studios for being inclusive because truly everyone is built differently🙏🏼 46:47 Shout out to Ashley for this bit. The question was triggering for me as well since I had a very bad experience with a guy who couldn't take no for an answer despite clearly turning him down several times & later getting wrongfully blamed for it by a loved one as if "I asked for it". Society tend to focus on what women should do most times while leaving out the part on what men shouldn't do, so I appreciate all the hosts for being the MVP in this situation. God bless y'all. I wish more people would address this issue as what it is instead of women constantly having to be extra vigilant & constantly having to come up with ways to make ourselves feel safe & defend ourselves to the point where we feel the need to ask on what should WE do in order to make rude men leave US alone. It's a sad world we live in :')

@24:05 love the mini science lesson from BM 😂 makes a lot of sense. I loved how he just picked up the script to illustrate the wave concept on the back of it. And apparently speaking in a lower register is also good for elderly people who are hard of hearing: my grandma went to the audiologist because she has a hard time hearing my aunt and me on the phone and it turns out our voices are too high so we have to speak in lower registers 😅
