I’m also a non-diver - I’ve been watching dive videos for a ridiculously long time lol but I definitely know I don’t know anything about it lol. But my guess is, kinda along the lines of what they were saying, it seems like the more you do it the more intuitive it becomes, sorta like driving. I think of all the things I didn’t know when I first started driving, being nervous about it etc, and now it feels like it’s all just second nature. I don’t have to overthink things like changing lanes, or left hand turns, or check my speed every few seconds like I did when I was 16; and that ability only comes with the combination of info & lots of time “practicing” driving. No one is putting a 16yo on the interstate for their first drive, or behind the wheel of a semi truck or whatever. I think maybe a combo of information PLUS ‘practice at your current level’ is similar when it comes to diving? Start small and work your way up. Full disclaimer, I might be wayyyyy wrong haha - that’s just my best guess at why people can do it without freaking out the whole time like I would lol

I can't stand fiction where it's clear that the author did zero research into something that I know a bit about. This is especially egregious when it comes to technology and hacking, movies and TV shows usually talk about it like it's magic, with explanations that make no sense at all. History is also usually misrepresented, even (or especially?) on the History Channel. So thanks for doing your due diligence so as not to come off as completely ignorant to those that actually know. That's a way to gain fans vs shooing them away.

Woody's comment at 17:17 spoken like a true DM "I wouldn't let go of him". No matter what your experience level anyone can have a freak incident of any kind, it's all how you react. Last month I had lost consciousness in an out at depth and my body and brain started symptoms of shock, hit a sudden cold thermocline, caused vertigo. I had let go and drifted away from the line. Luckily a very attentive buddy noticed he didn't see my light behind and backtracked apprehended the situation and made a safe assent. If he hadn't reacted right at that moment, I would not be here...

I was caught in a similar type of current on one of my first check out dives as a new open water diver. There was a rotation to it and also a substantial back and forth current. I was only in about 30 feet of water and I could see the ocean floor about 15-20 feet below me. Looking at the floor dramatically increased the vertigo and produced substantial nausea. I actually vomited into my regulator. I’m quite calm in somewhat stressful situations so I handled it just fine. My instructor and I calmly moved out of the current and then surfaced briefly to be sure everything was ok. We were then able to complete the remainder of the check out. Pretty interesting early experience.

At 6:00 it looks like at least one diver (possibly the buddy) approaches to help, but gets affected/scared by the vortex. My main observation is that many of the divers are using split fins which often cannot generate as much force as solid fins. Great content/reaction videos, keep up the great work! (Ex Divemaster)

@Orca Whale . They are useless for maintaining a position in the water. Useless for any kick style besides a straight flutter kick. It’s simply A gimmick for newbies, or the hydro *infirm among us that don’t want to put in the effort and time to be aquatically competent . Diving isn’t for everyone, no matter what PADI tries to tell us
@Aurora70077
@Aurora70077 3 жыл бұрын
@Michael Taylors I understand where you’re coming from because I agree that split fins allow divers to get propulsion even from terrible technique but I just think diving is the best way to learn to dive. It’s okay to suck at first as long as the goal is to improve technique over time. I’ve only ever used paddle fins but it’s okay to prefer either, I just don’t get the vitriol against split fins 😂

My brother is a certified diver of some kind that I'm not exactly sure. He told me and our mother about how he almost died going into a cave once with a couple of friends, and how he was the last one leaving the cave after stopping in an air pocket. I somewhat appreciated the level of danger he was in when he told the story, but now I really know that I'm lucky to still have him in my life. He did not say if they were near a shore or in scuba gear when this happened. I think you guys are doing a great job of informing people about how to be prepared for the dangers of diving, and especially to be properly trained. I think it looks awesome, and if money were nothing I'd try it for sure.

13:33 it looks to me like there are two people trapped in the vortex maybe 30 feet from each other. That’s probably why the other divers doesn’t want to come too close to the vortex cause what good can they do if they get trapped ALSO??! Nothing!!! So it’s wise for the others to wait for a better opportunity to reach out, maybe not approach when he is sinking but maybe when he starts to rise to the surface. I don’t know? What did the instructors in Palau tell you regarding vortexes, escaping one to be precise, Woody?

@@DIVETALK You guys should show some nice peaceful dives once in a while so us non-divers don't keep thinking you're all absolutely crazy. This is all we're seeing, you know. Vortexes, drowning slowly, falling to the bottom, panic and flailing in dead ends, getting lost in the dark, dying, dying, and more dying. It's like watching a train wreck, I can't look away. But if you asked me if I want to see the wreck from inside the train, my answer is naw.... that's okay. I used to never want to take up diving because of sharks. Now I don't even need sharks. Drowning in the deep is scary enough.

What causes these crazy underwater vortex? What a fascinating phenomena of nature.
@chriscoker7794
@chriscoker7794 3 жыл бұрын
Some vortices are caused just by the tide and the type of terrain going from larger to smaller inlets or vise versa and also deeper to shallower. Think about bottle necking for instance. I hope that may have helped answering your question. I'm sure that there are other reasons that I'm not aware of or mentioning. Maybe someone else will chime in for more answers.

That last bit of this video with you guys talking about your recent dive where Gus is trying to tie a line and Woody caught the current and got spit out leaving Gus in the dark...that was awesome...you guys should do more of that type of stories about your own dives. Including all the silly or goofy stuff that happens. Even including your dive buddies that were on that dive...like a chat about the dive once you get back on the surface then add in bits of the actual dive with your groups comentary back on the boat or shore.

To me it looks like they're trying to stay in it. I could be completely wrong here but it looks like they are having fun. The one guy is trying to stay in the vortex and allowing himself to spin in circles. It's almost like they're moving their selves into it and the guy up top is just filming it.

This channel is great!!! I love the stories with professional commentary. I was taught to dive as a kid, but am scared of open, dark water and I didn't continue. However, my dad was a clearance diver in the Canadian Navy (he was the XO on the HMCS Cormorant). So I've listened to many dive stories, over the last 40 years, and want to say that even he is impressed and intrigued by this channel. Especially as he is only open water certified and enjoys learning. Thank you for providing a great learning source that is equally as entertaining.

Absolutely love the videos guys, i've watched every one. I've learned from your videos that most of my fears about tech diving and cave diving were from over exaggerated and undereducated claims made by non-divers. You've made cave diving something that I want to now pursue the training for, instead of just looking on in awe from the a rec diver's viewpoint. Keep it up, you both provide an amazing perspective on diving. These are the only "reaction" videos I watch.

Because of this channel, I'm getting into more water sports. Yesterday, I just went tubing for the first time, and next week, I'm about to go out on my friends water skiis and wakeboard. Next summer, I'm planning on surfing our Great lakes in michigan. Thank you Woody and Gus for giving me this interest and confidence to just get out on the water and GO FOR IT. Even if its not technically scuba (yet), I'm still inspired by the two of you. Thank you for introducing me to my dream. And who knows? Maybe Scuba will be on the menu for me sometime in my future!

Oau! What a display of nature's force! Although I've seen this video before, I still had a tantalizing experience over again, watching it. It really makes you feel humble! I think the diver had a pointer-stick in his hand... and it's probably exactly the dive guide ( possibly an inexperienced one, though ). That's probably why none of the other divers tried to help him, thinking that if the dive guide is in trouble, it must be that serious that the rest of them wouldn't stand a chance there. I find your comments on how to solve such a situation very reasonable and helpful. Thank you, guys!
