I watch these two with my eyes behind my hands half the time because of the risks they take with their climbing ropes being in direct contact and rubbing against the rocks, using ropes that have been left in the caves by others, and repelling down and inside icy cold waterfalls ---an action that has killed others to hypothermia. But I'm really intrigued by the crazy amount of cave systems that exist in the American south east and appreciate their wonder and intrigue at the wildlife and rock formations they come across. Climbing deep in an underwater river system when it's flooding, not so much.

I'm currently getting over COVID for the second time and have a cat that got very stressed while we were away on vacation that we don't think he really ate while we were gone and is showing signs of FHV and some upper respiratory issues according to the emergency vet my brother took him to. He decided to break into my room(despite the fact her is VERY skinny right now he managed to open my door that was closed) and cuddle up next to me. It's nice to have voices in the background that I don't really have to pay attention to the video to enjoy. Not like I can really move right now as he decided to half lay on me.

Is there a reason why the "lines" or "cookies" in these videos are never reflective? I just imagine it would be a boon to visibility without any downsides?
@Yggdrasil423 ай бұрын
Cookies can be reflective or have reflective spots on them. Some do, like the Apeks ones. They're personalized by each diver so whatever they want. Line is paid for out of pocket by the divers doing to exploration or volunteers replacing old line so they usually go for what's affordable. Thousands of yards/meters of reflective line is likely too expensive. I also doubt it'll stay reflective for long, considering the brown and encrusted line I've seen in some darker caves. It would work in white caves but is probably just economics.
@psychobl153 ай бұрын
The simplest reason. When you need it, you aren't seeing the line. You are feeling it. The only thing you hope to feel when it goes black, is a cave arrow pointing the same direction you are going. Keep in mind, some of the lines in these places are many many years old and they are still discovering lines laid by great explorers like Sheck Exley 40 years after they were laid. So some cases are just, this stuff didn't exist. Additionally, water breaks everything down. Eventually, the reflective stuff will break down and litter the cave. Keep it simple.

@@psychobl15 In all fairness and accuracy we definitely and mostly use cookies in situations where viz is good… every nav point gets a cookie whether viz is good or not… arrows are also definitely relied on when viz is good. But yes, we also do rely on the ability to feel and discern the difference in the markers when viz is blown out.

I dunno what it is but you two just have a way of making these things very interesting and the way in which you explain things is generally easy to understand and at times your light-hearted banter can be quite funny.
