I have to say the fact the shark was already so well behaved getting harassed as much as it was already, at a certain point touching and chasing is going to push these animals to the edge. I love that you two are educating on how the animals feel. How humans actions effectively took a docile animal to defensive and scared in an instant.
@omegadivingacademy79373 жыл бұрын
I do not think it was scared at all and do not agree that sharks would attack due to threat that easily it simply had an idiot right in front of him and it took a little nibble. Tigers attack with velocity and biting power, that was no attack just irritation. Generally if they are not comfortable they just swim off.....not like a cornered animal.
@Skelath3 жыл бұрын
Problem also with this is that those sharks are associating the sound of that equipment and the humans with feeding, sharks are intelligent and even with my fish tank at home my Tiger Oscar Cichlids associate me with food, when they're hungry and they see me they start swimming back and forth erratically while looking at me and despite hand feeding them distinguishing me from the food, they can still bite me if they get too excited. Even Goldfish with their poor memories will follow your hand around if they associate you with food. I've also had an entire tank feed via an auto feeder, should come to no surprise that the fish in that tank never associated me with food and would completely ignore me or hide if they spotted me.

Did Woody really say “sharks just don’t attack humans, unless humans attack the sharks”? LMAO this guy is so ignorant!! Sharks are APEX PREDATORS. They (Great Whites and sometimes Tiger/Bull sharks) hunt us if they’re hungry or territorial. Sometimes, often times, even if the human has done nothing wrong except simply being in the water. Secondly- Threatening a shark (such as showing/holding a knife blade) will typically make it less likely to attack you, as sharks tend to want to attack defenseless prey and not a competitor. The only exception is if you aggressively chased the shark, then yes it would probably bite you for that

Hi, I've recently graduated with a BS in Ecology and Environmental Biology. Shark 'frenzy' dives are a great example of why sharks are more economically valuable to us alive than dead. However, many ecologists have a problem with these particular dives because sharks that rely on supplemental feeding by humans have shown signs of altered activity and habitat use patterns.
@canterburytail22942 жыл бұрын
Not to mention the grotesque over fishing of our oceans, people need to be better educated otherwise we lose things that are prescious to our planet as a whole. Where I live there is an underwater national park which I think is pretty damn awesome. The kelp forests are epic.

@russelld29252 жыл бұрын
Who cares if activity and habitat use patterns are altered? That’s the nature of evolution. Change is the default nature of living things and environments. No environment or form of life is static. Why would you base the morality of any choice on an expectation of static activity? It makes no sense. Environments always change. Life always adapts to its environment. Or it doesn’t. That is how evolution has progressed for two billion years. Also, Humans are living creatures. Never forget that biologically we are just another form of life on this planet. We are part of what is natural. There is to reason to separate us from other living creatures and call our activities unnatural. If a whale dies and sharks have abundant food for a week you would never advocate we get rid of the whale to avoid supplemental feeding. Every creature impacts and changes their environment. But if we do it it’s somehow wrong?

"This humongous tiger who can split any of these knuckleheads in two; is just there, avoiding confrontation." I feel like this is a great example of life in general. Knuckleheads always provoke the wrong one, and find out why it's a bad idea. Usually; those who provoke, are testing boundaries, trying to see how they compare. Those who don't and only act when they need to; is because they know exactly what they are capable of. @@dustinirwin1 Sure, sharks can sometimes eat humans, but you're just fearmongering by saying that humans are "on the menu." Humans are not native to the ocean, most oceanic sharks will never see a human in their whole lives, and those who do interact with humans time and time again will just leave them alone! Great Whites bite out of curiousity (their mouths are basically like our hands in regards to touch receptors) or a mistake in identification, never because they have an intention to eat humans. Tigers bite out of self defense or a mistake in frenzy, never because they have the intention to eat humans. And those sharks only have such high encounter rates with humans because they live close to where we like to go swimming. We enter their space, putting ourselves at increasing risk when we don't respect them. Only **one** species of shark is known to actually feast on live humans when given the opportunity, i believe its white tips, and evidence of them actually doing this is rare. Its only i disaster situations like ships that are going down and there are a lot of blood-releasing injuries. Divers are rarely at risk, especially if they keep their distance and respect the sharks. Saying that sharks as a whole are willing to eat humans because of one species who actually does that on rare occasion and a handful of species who bite with no intent to eat is ridiculous, you're lumping in the hundreds of different shark species together (most of which are more likely to be harmed and killed by humans than the other way around) to spread misinformation and fear about a creature that is morally neutral. It all comes down to Outdoor Ethics. It really doesn't matter if you're diving on a reef with turtles and sharks or hiking in Yellowstone with bears and bison. Touching (and direct contact) is unhealthy for both humans and animals. Such close direct contact is inherently dangerous and unethical. Just enjoy being in their presence and optically observe them.
@OTSOBerg-pn5gm3 жыл бұрын
I don't know about unethical that's an opinion, it can certainly be dangerous because if you are injured underwater it increases your chance of drowning. I feel that sharks of any species should not be fed and should simply be kept at a distance. I don't agree with the tourist diving with sharks that has become so popular mainly because in my opinion the biggest benefit of scuba is the ability to see how the underwater ecosystem actually works independent of human manipulation. Luring animals to come closer certainly cheapens that and is not a real representatation of nature just like an aquarium isn't.

As a surfer and a sailor (not yet a diver, but plan on getting my open water cert this summer.. hence why I am binging all your vids lol) I have a healthy respect for sharks. A shark will generally leave you alone unless they mistake you for food. Problem is, to a shark (which have horrible vision) a surfer paddling on a surfboard looks a lot like a wounded seal splashing around from underneath. Luckily, most sharks that attack surfers take one bite and realize fiberglass, foam, and neoprene don't taste good, so they spit you out.. unluckily for humans, they might spit you out, but those teeth do a LOT of damage with one bite before they do. Wetsuits save a lot of surfers lives because it acts like one big compression bandage, or you would bleed out immediately in the water. I have actually seen a Great White while surfing the Oregon coast.. and immediately caught the next wave all the way to shore, and didn't go back out for two weeks. Surfers despise people who chum for sharks in shallow water.. it brings them in close to the shoreline where humans are, and makes attacks much more likely. There is a special place in hell reserved for these people. Sharks and I have come to an understanding... I don't eat them in restaurants, and they don't eat me in the ocean.. it's worked so far 😅

It is, truly, a fantastic opportunity to see these magnificent creatures and i plan to continue to do this as long as I can.

I am actually really amazed with the patience of the shark... Everything that I've seen these people do in this video just seems like a terrible idea. It all to me, seems extremely amateur, reckless, and dangerous, and absolutely seems like they are taunting the shark. They feed the shark then sorround it and touch and poke it with sticks! To me, that is just wanting to get bitten. I had no clue sharks could be so chill. Talk about poking a bull (tiger) shark.

This video really helped with my shark phobia. Thank you so much. It was so helpful to see just how much they had to poke and prod that tiger to get it to react to them. My dream is to dive in the ocean one day and face my fears. :) I think it's possible for a shark to attack a human unprovoked, but I know that this is an incredibly rare event and typically something will have to be wrong with the shark or it's a case of mistaken identity. In the latter case, I believe diving is pretty safe because it's very obvious to the sharks that you are not food when you have all of that gear on and aren't floating at the surface (not to mention the noise). Basically, it's so unlikely so as to not be worth worrying about.

This happened at Beqa island in Fiji. I've been to these islands before and while the nature is truly beautiful and the people are friendly I seriously recommend bringing your own gear (complete setup) and keeping the dives simple. If anything goes wrong, you are going to have a very bad time as support infrastructure and qualified personnel in Fiji are either nonexistant or even better non functioning for the last X years (but they claim it works *khm* hyperbaric chamber *khm*). Your closest bet in case of serious emergency is New Caledonia (cca 1200km away).

In my extended circle there are two divers who’ve been attacked (mind you this is with dozens of people’s years of collective experience never having been bitten, diving their whole life). Both of them swam in between bait balls during feeding when they weren’t supposed to from what I understand. It’s pretty rare to be attacked and more likely at the surface.

Most of my diving with sharks has been reef and nurse sharks which are not particularly dangerous, but I've done some dives specifically intended to see much larger (and more curious) bull sharks. I gotta tell you, I don't remember the guides having to tell me "don't touch the sharks." I feel like that was common sense. The "check you out and turn away" behavior is what I've experienced with them.

This is insane to me. I will say that this still makes me feel so much better about sharks. Prior to me seeing this I would have assumed if I saw a shark, that I would be in deep trouble. This shark took more annoyance than I would before striking out and even then only sort of because they put themselves in its mouth. Then it just stopped! What a beautiful tolerant creature.

One of my first dives in Florida I had a lovely 6ft nurse swim about a foot under me, gave my dive partner a fantastic view! We got the blessing of seeing her and she went on her merry way. No harassment, no aggression, no panic or fear, just the gliding bueaty of one natures apex animals.

I agree with 99% of everything said except the dog feeding part. My doodle mix is a “couch shark” as we’ve determined. I can eat his food from his bowl since we started from day 1 making sure he wasn’t food defensive, by playing with his food while eating, taking it away mid meal & returning it, making him wait to eat while it’s ready to go etc... I grew up with dogs and learned well that dogs are like clay, if u so something from the start and keep it up, they will remember it. I’ve got a feeling the same goes for most animals.

Sharks are by far my favourite animals, most of the time bites only occur for one of two reasons: 1. You're provoking it 2. It bites you once to feel you out. They're very much like dogs, they don't have hands to feel with so they rely on their mouth. Juvenile sharks tend to make that mistake more than any other. You can also read their body language if you know a bit about sharks. Again, they're like dogs. You can tell when they're agitated or calm. They just need to be respected. Edit: Threshers are absolutely gorgeous, 100% my favourite shark

Would you or would you not attack them..? Just think about that logically for a hot minute now. Would you or would you not feel compelled to defend yourself against a random stranger who insists on touching and rubbing against you and disturbing you while you’re trying to relax or eat or explore…?

The closest I've done to this was in the Maldives, where we did a night dive to a little jetty at a resort where they clean fish to serve at their restaurant. Lots of stingrays and nurse sharks, and they get really intimately close. I had sharks pass by less than an inch away from me, and stingrays try to climb me. Nobody in the group reached out to touch anything though, maybe it's to do with culture, I think I was the only one in the dive group that wasn't German, or German speaking Swiss. I have touched a nurse shark, but I think it would be more fair to say that the nurse shark touched me, as I was stationary and filming it, and it swam into me(touching the hand holding the camera), but that was in Cozumel, Mexico.

I was a dive instructor in Thailand, within my first couple of weeks the boat took us out to a pinnacle and we dived down approximately 40m to the bottom of this wide pinnacle and started a gentle rise as we rounded the wide base. About half way up we encountered 3 large white tips swimming gently counter to our direction but in the same path, I halted the group and we just stayed still while they moved through, it was my first shark encounter and I would have many more after it but that one left me without breathe for a few mins and a new found respect. I'm with you guys, I love sharks and all wild life. I actually spend a lot If my free time helping wild life in different ways. I've swam with sharks (snorkel diving) and I've fished for sharks, I don't have a lot of experience with them but I will say out of all the sharks I've seen or come into contact with, the colder water bull sharks we get coming up the Chesapeake bay and into the Potomac River are savage. They have no fear of attacking anything in thier way. I've had bull sharks attack the boat when we weren't fishing or anything. Just enjoying time on the boat. Many stories of people being bit by smaller bull sharks, I've personally never seen it with my own eyes but I have seen video that a buddy took of a bull shark swinging up the Potomac river right where we nornally swim and snorkel if we are able. The water over here isn't the cleanest or clearest. But u can still see atleast 10 to 20 ft most times with calm currents.

This should be a great video for people to watch to show how gentle sharks can be. That Tiger shark could have went up,. put his jaws around that dude and shook him and ate him without even thinking. He was curious and since he does not have hands, he went up to see if that was food or not. I think with all the commotion, the shark got confused, tested and backed off. I dont have a problem with shark feeding, but WAY TOO CLOSE for me. Heck I have a couple of family members that I stay out of they way for when it comes to an all you can eat buffet. I trust these sharks more than them. Also, people think trained and coniditioned is the same thing and it is not. I can definetely go up to my dog's bowl and take it from them bc I trained it that I am alpha and I eat first. A shark is conditioned in knowing those entites bring food and thats it. There is no training or taming of a shark

I love how you guys are defending the marine life from humans. Our species has done so much damage to the oceans. I suspect (you'd know better than I do) that the bottom there is relatively barren because too many intrusive divers have damaged the life that otherwise would be there. I don't object to scuba diving in itself, but as Woody said, divers need to be taught to leave the marine life alone. Years ago I decided -- this is only my decision; I'm not telling anyone to do the same thing -- that the best thing I can do is to leave the oceans alone, and in particular I choose not to eat seafood. That's because overfishing has done a lot of probably permanent damage to the whole marine ecosystem, and I don't want to add to it. I'm not virtuous enough to be a vegetarian, but at least I can refrain from eating fish. BTW, one reason, I would suspect, that sharks leave divers alone (as long as the divers don't bother them) is that we don't smell like prey. In particular, while I don't know just what wetsuits are made of, I would think they either smell of rubber, or else the suits are made of something that doesn't smell and they therefore block most of our natural smells from the water.

I once did a dive in Hawaii with a big tour boat and was group #3 to go out. We were there to see turtles and the reef so the first and last thing they said to everyone during the speech was "Stay at least 10ft away from the turtles at all times because you could scare them and they will swim to the bottom to hide. If they do that, no one else will get to see them because they will stay down there a long time and we are only here for X amount of time". Of course the first thing group #1 does is shove their gopros on a stick(and themselves) in the turtles faces, all of this being caught on camera by the professional photographer that worked for the guide company. The worst part for me was all the photos would upload to this big screen on the boat in real time as they were taken so we could see what we would be doing and I knew that by my turn all those poor turtles would be gone. I was right and by the time I got out of the water I wanted to cuss out the entire group of tourists on the boat. I felt so bad for the turtles and so disappointed to not get to see them myself because they have always been one of my 2 favorite animals.

0:56 Woody, are you really saying sharks don't ever attack humans unprovoked? That's a big claim to make when it's been very well documented that some attacks have been unprovoked by a human. The shark could be very hungry. We may not be a sharks first meal choice but we are an option if the shark hasn't eaten in a while.

Unprovoked shark attacks are very rare. A person is more likely to be killed by an asteroid than by a shark. The odds of a person being the victim of a fatal shark attack is one in 3.75 million. Just like all animals, wild or domestic, it is possible for an unprovoked attack to occur, but it's not probable.

@Stefanie_Fithian A hyperbole is a figure of speech that uses exaggeration to emphasize a point. It's not meant to be taken literally, but rather to create a strong impression or evoke a particular emotion. For example, think of a mother telling her son, "I've told you a thousand times to clean your room." The mother hasn't literally told her son one thousand times to clean his room, but she had told him a lot of times. It's the same for what Woody said. He doesn't mean that sharks literally never attack unprovoked, but they hardly ever do.

0:48 "sharks just don't attack humans, unless humans attack the sharks" - I'm surprised to hear Woody say that. It's rare, but great white sharks, tiger sharks and bull sharks sometimes do attack humans unprovoked. It's less likely than getting killed by a falling coconut, but the probability isn't zero.
