Why do I feel like Ivan is not part of the solution but part of the problem. His statement seem to just put a bandaid on the problem, and try and glorify the small ounce of inclusion / diversity the industry has had. Fingers do need to be pointed, and people need to be held accountable !

Agents are the ones who hunt for new models. THEY are the root of the problem. This agent says don't blame people, don't point fingers. This guy couldn't take the heat.

Unfortunately, it seems to me that Ivan slightly misses the point, though. He says that we can't or shouldn't finger point, and that the INDUSTRY needs to embrace diversity.......however, it's important to keep in mind that the PEOPLE comprise the industry. And without calling out the people who are CAUSING issues, how does one expect the INDUSTRY (which is this sort of intangible entity) to effect change??

This was a FANTASTIC conversion and I enjoyed it immensely. Don't hide from the truth. We are too good for that. The fashion industry is filled to the brim with minorities and if they band together, they can truly be a major catalyst for change. It starts with conversation and then one must take action. Do what you can in your own way to break down walls. Kudos again to all who participated in this. P.S.- Joan is AMAZING in every single way. Love her!

This is not a new problem. Naomi Sims dealt with racist agencies in the 1960's who thought she was too dark, she sidestepped the agencies and went directly to fashion photographers and Gösta Peterson, a photographer for The New York Times, agreed to photograph her for the cover of the paper's August 1967 fashion supplement. She was later signed on by Wilhelmina Cooper and became the first black model on the cover of Ladies Home Journal. The 70's was a great decade for models of color, like the Battle of Versaille in 1973. Unfortunately the tides changed and the 80's saw a return of conservative values and a dislike for diversity.

1. Why did the casting director only bring up gender, age and size? No race? 2. When the end came why did the host say thank you and the camera only paneled over to the transgender guy's face and not Joan? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

That's not true, many of the world successful models are Latinos. Gisele, Adriana, Alessandra, Fernanda, Lais, Rachel Zimmerman, Leticia, Caroline Trentini, Caroline Ribeiro and list goes on and on.

Allow me to be more specific: dark-skinned/black/Moreno Latino models are overlooked by fashion. All those models you mentioned are considered white whilst someone like Joan is seen as a black model. We just forget about Latinos overall.

How are Latinos overlooked??? After Russian girls they are literally the second most common model type. BLACK girls of all ethnicities are criminally overlooked - white Latino girls are doing just fine, as long as they pass as Caucasian. Sad, but true.

I hear size, gender, ethnicity...can we please begin to consider dressing body types with disabilities, please? I work as a stylist in Los Angeles exclusively for actors and influencers with disabilities. I've followed clothing and retail trends for people with disabilities for 26 years. Anyone can become a person with a disability at any time.

Take from this what you will. Draft your own contracts. Set your own lane. Control your own images. Don't rely on those in the industry for acceptance. Embrace the never ending present.

We're now 6 years in the future since this talk and looking at the current shows, not so much has changed when it comes to diversity and inclusivity. My biggest hope was during the pandemic that the fashion industry will manage to finally make a reset but as soon as the pandemic was over it's back to the business as usual. Not so much has fundamentally changed. It's more about diversity and inclusivity for one or top two seasons as already mentioned by Hari and Joan for many brands. Unfortunately, when it comes to profit vs. humans, it's always about profit. As long as this attitude doesn't change there won't be a fundamental change regarding diversity and inclusivity.

I don't know why +TimBlank seems embarrassed to just say "you Joan as a black.." instead he said you are" Latina". I think that +JoanSmalls feels comfortable with her heritage and to be a Black woman. Others simply don't. I remember back in June 2016 at Paris Fashion Week a little girl (mixed little 5yo girl) saying I want to be like (model) Lineisy Montero and I asked her why not to be like other model (who appeared to be Romee Strijd) and she said "no she is like my doll". She likes cat walking and imitating models on runways. So Joan is right on saying she inspires other minorities it be black, Asians or albinos. I had a chance to attend Victoria secret fashion show in Grand Palais, Paris I saw at least 50 angels and only 4 amongst them were Black (mixed or not) and 3 Asian models (Ming Xi, Liu Wen and He Sui). I don't can't understand why +IvanBart President of IMG calls "diversity". Really? Does he know the definition of "diversity" in a group of 50 persons?
