Disagree. Respect is earned. To say a nurse has equal value to a pedophile would be incorrect. Is a teachers value the same as a child abuser?

Thank you for the comment, you have highlighted the problem in our thinking that prompted the creation of this video. This video is meant to challenge us to think about respecting a person's basic human dignity and help us not to assign differing human values to different people. Respect of personhood is different than respect of a person's actions or accomplishments and should be seen as separate. The value of actions must be assigned. But the value of humans? Who will decide that? Putin? You brought up nurse vs pedophile. Both are referring to a person's actions and people are not born nurses or pedophiles. But we are all born human. In the case where punishment or even death may be warranted for a crime, should we start torturing criminals? Wouldn't that be dehumanizing and denying that criminal due process as a human being? And what if it turned out they were innocent? Punishment for crime vs rewards for societal contribution is a separate issue and is not a theme included in this video. This video is meant to help us examine areas where we might have strayed from treating other humans as humans. And to challenge you to separate the ideas of respect of actions and respect of personhood. I could discuss further, but this reply is already long. Feel free to reply if you would like more discussion.

People who's substance abuse problems negatively affect those around them are not equals.

NGNG: Speaking from experience with a loved one that has substance abuse problems, I disagree. If we equate a person's worth with their actions or attitudes, that is a slippery slope. Have you ever made a mistake or said something that hurt someone else? Does someone that is controlled by other substances become an animal? They may act like one, but if they're freed from that control, do they suddenly become human again? If I view an imperfect person as worth less than me, couldn't it be that my attitude causes damage just as much as the negative actions of those that hurt me? Wouldn't I then be also acting like an animal? I choose to hang on to hope that behavior can change for the better, but do not cling to a naive hope. Just because I recognize their personhood doesn't mean I will trust them with my children, pets, or bank account. I set up boundaries but those are related to actions rather than their worth as a person. I believe we need to recognize our personhood is hard-wired into our DNA. Feel free to disagree, but that does not change your DNA - you still have the same number of genes as you did before this conversation and that defines your personhood and therefore your worth as a unique work of art. That's not to say a person's actions should not have consequences because they do and should. If a person commits a crime, they should pay the consequences. But I believe we should recognize a person's worth is not dependent on behavior or else we're all animals. I'll leave you with the ideas found in the beginning of the preamble of the Declaration of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights..." Peace.

I disagree with respect. You can not simply say you have to respect someone because they are a person. Some people are really intolerable, does that mean I have to respect them too? You can not simply command respect. We can be civil to one another, courteous, empathetic and understanding, once we better get to comprehend these traits then out of the relationships that form, comes trust and respect.

There is a difference between respecting a person's worth and a person's actions. This video is intended to bring out the idea of respecting a person's worth as a human and does not address "what if the person is a jerk." I believe that to be a separate issue. Behavior, attitudes, and beliefs can change, but a person's genetic code cannot. I see a person's value as a human being as programmed into their genetic code. They are valuable and worth respecting because they are human. Behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are choices and we can disagree and reject those things but we cannot afford to disrespect someone's identity as a human. To do so would be to reject ourselves.

DBS Thanks for taking the time to reply. My point being, no one can demand respect, or you can but it doesn't mean I have to respect you. We respect people who are respectable, we make value judgements to distinguish whether or not they are deserving of respect. It has nothing to do with worth? How do you determine someone's worth simply because they are human? A worth is a usefulness or importance as to the world, a purpose or a person and could be inestimable in one's opinion.

GK, do you mean because Europe and England are diverse that Europe and England are weak and on the path to self-destruction? Or do you mean an attempt at legislating specific diversity outcomes led to weakness and self-destruction? Keep in mind the focus of this video is to encourage self-reflection on our attitudes toward other individuals and to spark conversation. The purpose of this video is NOT to suggest or defend policies that attempt to achieve some specific societal outcome related to diversity. Someone please tell me where a government attempted to legislate diversity and it went well for all involved? Existing diversity policies I can imagine are based on win-lose, not win-win. Here is my opinion which led to the creation of this video: I hope one day the majority of the human race can replace all presuppositions about different people groups with the one presupposition that every human is valuable. Then we could maybe start to have some tough conversations about how to deal with the messes we see when individual humans are marginalized.

I like the message of your video, but I find it ironic that the animated people all appear to be caucasian. I think illustrating more diversity would have made your message more universal.

This video was published in 2013 using PowToon. The tools available at the time were used to give as much variety as possible.

I respect all peoples but I'll tell you the honest to God truth -> My first love is my own family and my first love is to my own heritage. And I see my heritage (the European people) being destroyed.

If they were priceless, would you flush them? I'm not sure your comparison makes much sense. The interesting thing about such waste though is that it can be made valuable as a commodity. I remember many farmers in my home area turn such stuff from their animals into money by spreading it on their fields. But how can anyone in good conscience put a fixed dollar value on a person? This video is incorrect in my opinion. We shouldn’t show the same respect to Hitler and pedophiles like how we respect of parents. People also do have a worth. If a guy who works as a cashier won’t have the same value and a guy with a job as a doctor. Also bullying someone can lower someone’s worth. That person who is bullied might get mental problems from the bullying and lack the motivation to work a job with will either get them fired of punished.

It's interesting to me how some must go to extremes to try and justify their viewpoints when they disagree with the ideas in this video. If you need to bring up Hitler and pedophiles to support your position, then perhaps you should re-examine your position. some random guy: The paradigm you use to describe a person's worth is the paradigm this video was created to challenge. You said, "bullying someone can lower someone's worth." Perhaps that bullied person may feel worth a little less, but has that person stopped becoming a person as a result of the bullying? They had the same number of chromosomes before and after the bullying, correct? Perhaps we need a reminder that a bullied person's value is a function of being human and we need to reaffirm their worth after they've been a victim? Or better yet, point out to potential bullies that people are valuable and there is no place for bullying? And then have strong deterrents for bullying behavior? If we could make the idea that each individual is ultimately valuable the natural viewpoint, I believe bullying would decrease. We need to challenge ideas and actions more and assign a measured value to people less. It seems what you're describing is that a person's contributions to society makes them more or less valuable. That makes sense on the surface, but any time we attempt to assign a measured value to an individual based off anything external (skin color, religion, occupation, wealth, attitude, etc) we risk objectifying that person and going down Hitler's road. He chose one people group (Jews) to be designated as less valuable than another and then he acted on it. How hideous! I suggest your definition of how a person's human worth being a function of status, occupation, or accomplishment to is closer to Hitler's philosophy than what this video represents. When this video challenges us to respect others, it is referring to respecting their personhood, which should be separate from respecting their accomplishments, attitudes, beliefs, actions, etc. I can respect your humanness while at the same time disagreeing with your ideas or accomplishments. I reject the idea that a person is only worth as much as they have accomplished. The moment we confuse a person's value with actions or a person's value with socioeconomic status is the moment we start to measure and categorize human value. When we sort people into groups and then treat certain groups as being more or less valuable, isn't that what racism comes from? This video was created to challenge us to move away from categorizing and assigning value to people and move toward a future where we can automatically think of each individual as ultimately valuable regardless of that person's position. Are we there? Obviously not. Could each of us make a choice to take a step in that direction? Only if we agree to listen to each other. Can you be strong enough to stand against certain viewpoints while still respecting the humanness of the individual that holds those viewpoints? I'm trying to do so. Thank you for your response.

Great example of how language changes over time. 10 years ago, diversity meant people of different backgrounds all being treated equally. In 2023, diversity means a group made up entirely of racist black people.
