Why not stick with GUE? If you got a tech pass, its a direct transfer from fundamentals to Tech 1.

@@rjt1955 Well, not a Tech Pass, so I still need to get that (hopefully in another month). Its more about me wanting to have a wider exposure to the teaching style of different instructors and agencies, as well as trusting my dive buddies judgement (one of whom actually is GUE Tech 1 certified and still recommended TDI). And not going to lie, I have heard the cost of Tech 1 is pretty high so its also a factor.

This is awesome! I loved this video and my biggest takeaway was when you said it doesnt have to be a rush. I also appreciate knowing that a course like discover scuba but for tec diving even exists! I LOVED doing discover scuba - I did it twice before I got my cert and it was like the carrot memory that helped me after I failed my pool dive the first time during my cert - couldnt clear my mask and I panicked ... Luckily I had dive master buddy that gave me a private lesson and we literally cleared my mask over and over and over for over an hour or more in the pool and just touched on a few other skills until I felt so comfortable doing it, I had zero fesr about it... I remember at the time thinking if I hadnt done discover scuba to know how much fun it is on the other side, I dont know if I would have pushed through.

Great content as always, James! Last year, I did my GUE Fundamentals, and I guess you could compare it to an intro to tech. The skills we built and refined there really helped me when I went on and did my PADI Tec40 and Tec45. I would've had a way harder time with those two courses if I hadn't done the Fundies before.

I've done the intro to tech non-diving parts, still need to do, or not, the dives. I'm glad i did. I learned a lot about the math and general principles i hadn't picked up from dozens of hours BS'ing with tech divers. I'm not sure I'll do the actual dives as I'm not worried about the card but i will definitely get my doubles setup in the water with another highly experienced diver or instructor for some fun rec dives before i go for Advanced NITROX. My instructor let me skip Intro To Tec, I went straight to Adv Wreck, Deco, Adv Nitrox. Because I did have a good amount of dives, Sidemount, and doubles experience. Thx John for saving me the money. I knew I wanted to dive tec, so I actually started training myself for Tec by setting up my single tank rig up as a backplate and wing w/long hose and necklace. I then invested in doubles and dived that for a while. Then got trained on sidemount. Because I put in the training/preparing myself for Tec this way I just skipped the Into To Tec. It was natural that way, and saved the cash I would spend on intro, I spent it on gear to get me there.

I took an intro to tech course this past August. I only took the course to learn how to dive with twin tank instead of only one. I basically did the same activites that I did during my open water and advanced open water such as buoyance control, compass navigation, deploying smb, etc. The only difference is that I need to do all of that with double tanks on my back instead of only one tank. I didn’t do any other special training like gas mixing or decompression stops. I enjoy diving with two tanks now because of the obvious benefits of having more air and therefore staying underwater a bit longer not deeper of course.

I always thought intro to tech was teaching the diver how to dive back mounted doubles and TDI sidemount was the same but in the sidemount configuration (finning with doubles, doubles gear setup, valve drills, out of air drills with doubles, doubles pre-dive checks, buyancy control while completing complex tasks, all open water diver skills in doubles...). Mine was sidemount and it took 10 full days of classroom, land drills, water drills, and 25 sidemount dives before i completed the class. The way i was taught, you can't go any further in tech classes until you are very solid on all of the intro to tech skills because these skills are the foundation (just like open water cert. is for rec diving) for all other tech classes.

This KZbinr needs to reply to this, because it’s serious: “If you failed a student just because of them saying they were gonna dive unsafely at a later date, then sure you * can * fail them, but you’re obligated to give them their money back. If you’re not willing to pass them on this specific course they paid for, based on the specific course they paid for, and if you’re making judgments into their personal life, outside of that specific course, then you are 100% obligated to give them their money back. And if you didn’t, I absolutely hope they blasted you on every review site possible and did a credit card chargeback also. Not to be harsh, but yeah. You’re a dive instructor and you can certainly fail someone, but if it’s not even related to the specific course itself then you better be giving them their money back. As a business owner myself it’s the right thing to do. In my line of work, if my customer paid for some thing and then I came up with some “blah blah their future safety” excuse to stop halfway through my job and not finish, I would be sued or go to jail. Just saying lol”

I’m currently doing sidemount through SDI/TDI (and love it) in prep for eventual cave diving. My instructor made us do a private session of finning techniques and various finning techniques, breathing ladder, SMB, sharing air while horizontal and not holding onto each other before we bought our sidemount rigs. We’re also doing SAC rate calculations (and I’m incorporating this into my very nerdy dove log spreadsheet)…did we secretly already do Intro to Tech without the instructor telling us?

It could not have come at a better time as i intend to make a progression into tec. im going to do Swedtech diving "extended basics". it's basically like the GUE fundamentals but also includes training with a stage cylinder, and can also be done with trimix and to 40 meters. topics i would be interrested is a quick overview of what the roles are in a three people team, who is the boss of what, and what you would recommend to get as minimum gear to get before going tec. another topic could be "Rebreather and me - if / why / when switch!"

I'm a scuba instructor myself (PADI, MSDT), and rec CCR diver. On my last scuba vacation the dive shop owner(TDI tech instructor) offered (and I accepted) to take me on some planned deco try dives. I ended up doing 3 days of double dives like this, with 50% nitrox stage bottles, max depth was 56m, max tts 30 minutes. He didn't make it an official course, so I just paid for the dives, gas, and rentals. I'll return later this year and take him up on a full advanced nitrox + deco procedures course.

Hey James! I've been watching your for a year and a half. I am a relatively newer diver (Oct 2020 OW cert) with 31 dives and AOW (Sep 2021). My opportunities to dive aren't as frequent, but I feel like I have a good mix of dives. I have had interest in technical diving for awhile. I'm not as interested in the 50m dives, nor cave diving in my home state of Florida's springs system/aquifers. I'm interested in extending bottom times, but more so in having the deeper understanding of "how things work". I'm completely comfortable with math (electrical engineer working in software). My wife and I are planning on doing Nitrox certification this summer before going to the Spiegel Grove in the keys. My question is often centered around "when do we learn the complex details"? and "how do the gas choice and NDL calculations actually work"? I don't mean the equations, but more from what I believe tech divers do. I've been told that the DM and instructor course is when you start to learn more about it and really starting understand the dive tables in more than the most simplistic ways. I guess I want to nerd out and really understand what is happening so that I can safely push recreational limits (ie tech diving) with the appropriate training and certification. I have considered doing rescue diver, DM, and possibly instructor since I love teaching and I want to inspire, but I don't want to rush it. I want more dives, experience, and time before I seriously consider it. Dives locations so far: Homestead Crater and reservoir in southern Utah, 8 in Cozumel, 2 in and along a clear water spring in Central Florida, 2 wrecks just off Wilmington, NC. Planning on 6-8 dives at the keys this summer (including a couple with our soon-to-be certified pre-teen daughter), and lobster diving around the Catalina Island are in the fall. We also try to do some simple fun dives in local reservoirs.

Also, I grew up in FL always wanting to dive (really anything that gets me in the water like swimming, lifeguarding, boating, snorkeling, etc), but never got scuba certified until mid 30's. I've always been used to the decidedly not clear water of many of the east coast beaches like New Smyrna, Daytona, and Cocoa, but I've been hearing that once you get to West Palm and points south that the water gets clear - even in the ICW. Is that true? What dives are there in the areas north of Miami? What about the Central Florida area?

James as far as I know at the dive center that I dive at in Eilat Israel the price of an intro to tech course is almost the same as deco procedures and as advanced nitrox. Also if you don't have intro to tech you can't rent twin tanks. As far as I know you can't take deco procedures and advanced nitrox with out it

Good day James, I have a short question concerning how much more weight one has to carry for a tech dive compared to a recreational dive. For instance I usually dive with a Steel 100 tank (~40lb) and sometimes carry 26 lbs lead for 7mm cold water dive about 60-70lbs on my back. So if I took a tech dive somewhere warm with a 1mm/skin wetsuit. How much weight would I need to carry. Assuming 2 x Al 80 and 1 spare tank (2x35 lb 1x25 lb plus lead ~10lb = 105lbs total). Does this sound correct?

Hello, I am Advanced Certified with Nitrox and 60 dives logged in Padi. I have always heard TDI is better for tech diving. My plan is to get 40 more dives and then take an intro to tech diving. Can I crossover from Padi to TDI?

Can you elaborate more on the 25 high quality dives please; probably emphasizing dive logs, dive profiles, depth, dive sites, etc.

If half your dives are in a swimming pool, those wouldn’t be quality dives. This is just my opinion, but I would say some relatively deep dives, dives where you used any mix of nitrox, different types of dives like a wreck, reef, a spring, quarry, good vis, bad vis and some night dives. Also have some longer dives. I’m sure James and everyone else may have a different definition than I.

Great idea for new series. Really interested in learning more. I have done nitrox and Basic Padi Wreck diving and I am deciding if I should do first rescue diving or something starting tech. About 100 dives. Advanced Padi, but all dives in tropical waters. No interest in being an instructor. I would love any advice. Thanks.

I was in a similar situation and did Rescue first. Then did TDI Sidemount Essentials as my first tech course. Don't regret that order. Rescue made me much more situationally aware and able to help others instead of focussing on myself. Find a well regarded instructor, no matter what you do. Don't make it easy on yourself. Tech training has a tendency to make you realize you've got a lot left to learn, which can be hard, but will also level you up in no time.

Also would be great if you were able to make connections with cave diving as i have seen for example that some cave instructors want their students to bei either "intro to tech" certified OR "TDI sidemount" certified. Are those two courses sort of equivalent? If i go the sidemount route, can i do all of the courses down the line using sidemount as well?

Yes, I did TDI Sidemount Essentials, which included the skills that an Intro to Tech course would have. Done all my courses after in Sidemount too: TDI adv Nitrox, Deco Pro, IANTD Self Sufficient Diver, PSAI Cavern, Intro To Cave, Full Cave, etc. Actually got TDI Cave Sidemount as a bonus from my cave instructor because I'd done the whole cave course in sidemount.

I am probably not interested in tech diving but found this useful anyway. Fiddling with tables is not my idea of diving. One thing maybe you could explain WHY anyone would bother with Nitrox and Trimix anyway. At least a re-breather make sense, if you can afford one.

Well Nitrox is a clear winner. Why wouldn't you want to stay longer and be more clear headed? If there's a nice wreck at 35m you can be sure I'll bring the Nitrox mix that allows me to stay there as long as possible. Trimix is an extension of the same idea, but deeper, and has the significant downside of cost. I personally wouldn't go into open circuit trimix at this point and save up for a rebreather instead.

I just wonder if I would do a intro to tec, would it count for tec diving or is it like wasting money, if I'm quite sure I want to go this path? Or do you have any ideas how to check if my skills are okay to start or: please don't do tec diving.? I know your time should be paid, so I would never ask for a free try, but in the other hand a $500 try tec dive isn't worth too, if it counts nothing, I guess you understand what I mean.

I cannot agree that Intro to Tech is a "taste of" technical diving because it is required by cave instructors for people to initiate cave training. Moreover, TDI states that during the Intro to Tech course people will learn "In-depth dive planning, advanced buoyancy control, gas management, situational awareness, proper trim, gear configuration and selection." Intro to Tech should teach students trim&buoyancy skills (how to use frog, modified frog, back kick) as well as use of backmounted doubles with manifold. Definitely NOT a "resort course" or "a taste" of something else.

It depends on which certification you are. OW is 40 feet. AOW is 100 feet.

i'm confused at what tech diving is exactly. what does it get you over aow. it looks like you carry multiple tanks for extra breathing time but if you're rich you can buy a ccr. does it allow you to go deeper on mixed gasses. looking forward to your 40% o2 nitrox vid. if you can explain why 32% is the std. i have my nitrox cert. should i be satisfied when the analyzer shows 30%

Tech diving is any diving that goes beyond the recreational limits set by the agencies. So, whenever your diving longer, or deeper, or in a overhead environment like a wreck, cavern or cave. You're increasing your risk (because that's what the recreational limits do, they limit risk). To mitigate that risk you'll need to bring more gear (redundant breathing gear, special gas mixes, etc.) and be more skilled to handle that gear, be great at you trim and buoyancy, be able to deal with emergencies. Why tech dive? Perhaps there's a beautiful wreck at 35m that you want to spend more than 5 minutes looking around. Perhaps you want to go inside that wreck. Maybe you just want more breathing gas for a long shallow dive so you bring sidemount or a twinset. Maybe you want to see what's at the bottom of your local lake that's deeper than 35m. Maybe you want to dive the beautiful caves in Mexico. Could be many reasons. Tech training has never made someone a worse diver, in fact its the best dive training you can get since tech instructors are some of the most experienced divers you'll meet. But it can be challenging since most divers aren't as great as they think. ;)

Following up on your other questions. Multiple tanks is tech, CCR is tech, O2 over 40% is tech. It's all non-recreational therefore it's technical diving. As for your Nitrox questions. A percent off isn't usually a big deal, two percent means I'd probably have to adjust my dive plan. Since you're Nitrox certified, try to calculate the difference in max-depth and NDL between a 30% and a 32% Nitrox mix. Maybe for a dive to say, 25m?

I am with SSI and they require you to “certify” your dives by scanning a QR code at an SSI facility.

Well it means dive logs that are actual dives. Not swimming pool dives or 5 minute dives. Getting them signed by your buddy or instructor gives them some legitimacy, but mostly it's a honor system. Try to get 25 dives of varied experience, some deeper, some with less cuz, maybe a night and boat dive or two. If you want to take a 100 dives in your logbook nobody will stop you but you won't have learned a thing.
