so true, I was lucky to be involved with a group of experienced guys who had gone through all the stages up to divemaster and beyond and just came back to recreational but with the tech gear, ie wings not bcds and one with a rebreather. Therefore after my initial training my first gear was straight to a wing and was taught frog kick from the outset by them.

The Shop I DM/AI with has a strict "don't talk tech" during open water training. The shop offers a robust tech inventory, including rebreathers, sidemount, trimix, and cave gear. It's a tech shop with a recreational front. Having spent enough time in various open water classes, I have found that you can absolutely spook new divers by describing tech dives. We still base a huge amount of gear set up and skills based off of the tech world. And that's the issue, how do you integrate time tested and practical advice from the tech world without overwhelming the students?

I agree, the recreational shops need to keep their cost in line; only the larger shops can actually spread out in to the tech gear and support that community. Most of the recreational shops want to get you an open water and nitrox then send you on trips.

Yup- it does start to feel like change is in the air with both the tech element and the teaching, and mostly for the better I feel 🤙

@@TheScubaDivingChannel I agree it will be for the better. It would be nice to have it in high school/ college the industry would have a constant supply of consumers. Right now it seems it’s for people who have the means to go all over the world take pictures so they can tell you how much they did. Hopefully the industry can accommodate the “regular folks”

I'm recreational diver but my gear is mostly tec. Still have some wishes though.. Better computer, change the cheap octopus regulator for a good one. I'm using the long hose and neck setup. Love everything pretty much close to me and not dangling around

Interesting video and perspectives. Sadly too often tech divers tend to be elitist. They often look down on those just getting going, or the gear they have and use.

I hate to see divers sold anything except a BP/W. That shop is just trying to line up another sale in a year or two at most. Same with console computers and yoke regs.
@TheScubaDivingChannel Жыл бұрын
I agree with all but BPW, although usually a BPW is a good idea, there’s a lot of good back inflate streamlined BCs good for travel etc. But they should 100% be shown it esp if interested in tech

They tend to confond recreational divers with beginners...

I jumped to the end to hear the controversial part. As far as teach on knees, by the time we get out of confined 3 everything neutral. It’s asking a lot to ask someone to be neutral from the jump with everything else. As far as teach in backplate, I try to teach students configured for what they’re likely to get in rental. Realistically most people are not going to be avid divers. A few times a year maybe, probably on vacation. That means a jacket, maybe a weight belt too depending the operation. They might as well be familiar with what they’re going to get.

Appreciate it! Although I just do private at this point and am limited to a handful of rigs in my garage, I do back inflates mainly so it’s kinda in the middle, and explain to them to try both and make sure they get the differences and help them go from there whichever way they want 🍻
@popeafsweden1029 Жыл бұрын
@dclangst isn't it time to start pressuring the centers renting out only jackets to start transitioning instead of beeing happy with "that means jackets"? The center can have booth. I have not met a single diver trying out a BPW not want to throw out their jacket style bcd...

@@dclangst “it’s asking a lot to ask someone to be neutral” Translation: you’re a lazy instructor and want to speed the process up. You are the problem.

How to bridge the gap: avoid PADI. They’re about numbers, not quality. When you start in PADI and if you expect to advance thru the higher quality other agencies, you’ve got to unlearn half of what PADI taught and learn new skills PADI should have taught in open water. PADI should only be used by vacation divers.
