The Spain case is curious,because the carrier is mixed carrier/anphibius ship and the frigates type F-100 and futures F-110(in order for build) they are frigates by crew,size and weight but destroyers by power fire with Aegis system,at same level of USA destroyers , Arleigh -Burke class.

In Spain we don't consider "destroyers" as destroyers. We call them all frigates for political reasons

Also the Juan Carlos aircraft carrier has those characteristics because the only place Spain has a more conflictive (just in political terms) is on the Mediterranean coast and Atlantic coasts of Africa so a big portion of the navy is designed to have a more powerful job in those coasts, that would need fast deploys of air support and quick amphibious responses to take strategic positions as fast as possible and secure the defense for a future bigger landing. It's not considering to go to war against any North African nation but more about a persuasive thing

Since Spanish overseas territories are not too far away from mainland and African coast, a big Nuclear aircraft carrier with pure air support tasks would be useless to maintain. They are considered autonomous communities (in the case of the Canary Islands near the coast of Western Sahara) and autonomous cities in the case of Ceuta and Melilla in Northern Morocco mainland

I think everybody (except Spanish Armada High Command, lol) agree that the F-100 (Álvaro de Bazán class) are in fact destroyers. But the F-110 are going to be pure frigates (just 2 VLS cell blocks, 8 cells x block).

I do have my problems with a EU army, but seeing the current context of things, Super Power like the USA, a rising China with a population of 1B, Russia itself. I think its the way to go, small European states like Portugal, Croatia simply cant compete, even the greatest EU economy and population Germany is small in the world scale of things, the days of European empires and such is over. This is a new age, and i think a alternative to NATO (still keep NATO) just for EU states rely on each other with a ready, fuctional and well made army, with a EU budget which is in top 3 of world economies and big population, is the way to go. And i do have my doubts and problems with it, like who would control it, and what for, national/regional identity and such. But looking at the world and the bigger picture as it is and for EU countries stopping relying only in the USA to "protect" and have the EU interests also, i think a EU army is needed as alternative for NATO, but both can exist.

No need a european army in itself, just preparing national armies ( and navies ) to be able of joint initiatives if needed. No more also need NATO, who is under U.S. domination, and can lead european nations and armies to wars decided in Washington, and only made for interests of U.S.A. No need either of an European Union, who is governed by a non-elected council, mostly at the service of implacable american and mondial financial interests, avid to break social laws in all Europe, to raise a hyper -capitalist " liberal" rotten society opposed to the interests of european peoples, and directed by a non-elected government. In place, some treatys between nations about diverse items are widely sufficient. Iceland was the first country to get out of this trap, and now has no more debt and disoccupation; G-B will soon be in the same situation; during what all the other nations members of the E.U. are drowning in debt and disoccupation... I would want my country, France, to get out from this diguised tyranny, and also the other european peoples. Bravo Brexit, and hope Frexit !

In the future, no country in EU will account for 1 percent of world population and the influence of Each Eu state will go down. Only together, we can protect ourselves and the world, and have a better economy. Imagine China want to invade small countries like Portugal or even Italy, do you think Italy will win by itself. The french Marine Nationale has only 2 destroyers: Forbin and Chevalier Paul, the others are only frigates, and the italian MARINA MILITARE has 4 destroyers, the Durand de La Penne has a brother, the DDG Mimbelli still in service.
