One of the funniest plot twists to a story I've ever heard
@ArmyOfDarkness19893 жыл бұрын
Love Dive Talk's vids but I think they and most of the comments are missing a major point of the story. There's a guide line that leads to the entrance of the cave. Then there is the main line inside the cave. They were connecting a jump line between the two when his buddy freaked out. Foolishly Donald swam unconnected into the silted out area to help his friend and got disoriented. When Donald got out of the silt he was inside the cave system on the other side of a silt out. All the times he is talking about a line afterward is the main line inside the cave. And their safety line is not connected to it - his friend got tangled in it before connecting. He has no reasonable way out as far as I know. The main line of the cave does not lead out of the cave system. The only way out is silted and there is no line connecting through there. His buddy who was tangled in the safety line calmed down, untangled, and followed the safety line out of the silt to safety. This doesn't excuse the stupidity in this story. His friend was always tied off and was eventually able to save himself. Sounds like only his buddy was connected to the safety line and Donald had nothing (not a cave diver but this doesn't sound right to me). There was no reason to swim in to "save" his friend. He put himself and his friend in danger by being reckless. He should have tied off and then tried to help. Likewise, his friend could have tried to save Donald. He knew his friend was without a safety line inside the cave/silted area and left him there. Would like to hear Dive Talk's actual take on what to do in this situation because I think they missed the point. What do you do when you have no line to follow out of a cave? Should both have been connected to safety/jump line when making they were heading into the cave? Should have they had their own separate lines? Even if you are connected should you swim into silt to help untangle your buddy? Should his friend try to save him?

Having listened to stories Thad Edd Sorensen told here on the channel or elsewhere I kinda recognized a big difference in storytelling. Edd never glorified himself, Edd never talked somebody down, Edd wasn't constantly talking about emotions. Edd has a very clinical way of telling a story, almost like an official report. He knows when to use terminology and when to describe something. He acknowledges that he has experience but he still admits that he has to analyze situations. He admits that situations escalate in ways he didn't expect. He knows how to tell his stories without bragging and without putting his actions into the spotlight. It's this undertone that let's you know that he doesn't tell stories to make himself look like a hero but for the sake of telling a story and sharing experiences.
@MrFinepixa2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I get the impression from this story telling that he has quite a bad memory of the events. Everything he remembers is his emotions at the time and that he was panicking. Makes for a very terribly disorienting story that you cant really follow.

During this tie off process his buddy suffered the problem and the line he was trying to tie off got tangled around his body. His buddy in panic silted out the whole cave leading to the entrance grabbed the line tangled around his body and followed it out to safety. I think he genuinely believed he was going to die, and it traumatized him. But the story doesn't quite fit. There has to be gaps... the part about his partner just taking the line out, it's so embarrassing, it has to be true... It sounds like Cowboy and his partner made a poor team together. Not very trusting. Instead of staying cool for his partner and following safety procedure, he makes an impulse decision that put him in lethal danger. The way Cowboy tells the story on Rogan, he makes it sound like he did everything right. He says, in the cave, "it's every man for himself," _but_ "I selflessly chose go in and save him." So, the story puts Cowboy's decision beyond raproche. No layman listening to him is going to say, "No, Cowboy, your partner deserved to be left for dead. You screwed up there." In his telling, Cowboy is only breaking the safety rules because he wants to save his partner's life. Of course, framing the story that way doesn't fit together with the part where his partner apparently saved himself, without any assistance or even moral support from Cowboy. I'm no diver, but even so, that bit didn't make sense to me when I first watched this. So thank you guys for giving a professional response to this.

@@DIVETALK I really do think there’s a distinction to be made between him suggesting he’s a “super cave diver” or being super into cave diving, also that he may be no where as into cave diving as many others such as you two fellas. Because if you are analysing the video to debunk a self proclaimed expert who is a fraud than it make a lot of sense to pick at everything in this manner, I think you took things very literally too, he is definitely the type of guy to try to save another, I believe he was clearly summarising the point you guys made about self preservation, along with other things he said. He clearly isn’t a cave diving scholar or an academic of any sort, he received blows to the head from trained martial artists for a career. I work in a dangerous industry with many shared hazards with caving, a brief and almost heartless rule we are taught is self escape, just get yourself out and don’t take risks for others. Of course this could be expanded on almost endlessly with so many different situations and factors that it could go on and on. But it would not be false for me to state that I was trained to self escape above assist others

There is so much wrong with this story. I don't think he had any official cave training, he broke all the rules and is constantly mislabeling dive terms. He was diving in Aerolito cave in Cozumel which I have dove many times. First of all there is no crack in the ceiling that leads to air so that part is not true and discredits everything else. His constant losing the line is absolutely ridiculous, and there is no way you would purposely inflate your BCD and stick yourself to the top of the cave even further away from the main line. He had plenty of air at that point in his two side mount tanks and even had a third stage tank that was totally full. This cave is rarely dove and has a lot of fine silt so it would be easy to silt the cave out but even in zero visibility you just follow the line and your cookies and arrows and you can get out, its not the end of the world. There is a lot of ego in this story and it was majorly embellished to make himself seem cool

@@electrictroy2010 He didnt let go of the main line, he is an amateur diver not a professional. What happened if you follow what he is actually saying and not listening to the commentary, they were on their way from the MAIN LINE to the other line that was going deeper into the cave, his buddy had a line running from the main line to the other line going to the deep cave, he got tangled in his line, Cerrone went in to untangle him but his buddy freaked out, and silted out the room between the MAIN line and the Off line going into the deep cave. Cerrone took 5 steps back NOT towards the MAIN line but towards the off line going into the deep cave. His buddy got untangled and just followed his line back to MAIN line and from there went back to the Exit. Now, Cerrone as an amateur diver went into the silt, freaked out because he couldnt see anything and went back to the OFF line going deep into the cave, thats why when he said ''In front of me it was silted out(In front of him where the MAIN LINE is, the way between him and the main line is silted out) and behind me its clear I can see everything'' so to go deep its nice and clear, and to go to the main line its silted out. I think it's pretty clear that this man's dive stories don't pass the smell test, so in the strict definition of the word he would be *ahem* "lying." BUT! He kinda reminds me of neuro patients that I encounter as a nurse. People with certain brain disorders - traumatic brain injuries, dementia, CTE - sometimes do this thing called "confabulation." Basically, they lie without intent to deceive. The human brain has a magnificent ability to fill in gaps to create a coherent picture, so if you've got this base memory that's fragmented because your brain can't reliably store & recall information (physical injury, lack of blood flow to certain structures, impairment due to substances), when you tell remembered stories the brain just sorta.... fills in the blank parts. To the outside listener, the stories of the confabulator sound fantastical and it's pretty obvious that things couldn't have gone down the way they say. But to the person telling the story, the act of recall means it's now the actual memory, & they don't have the insight to recognize it as false. It becomes true for them as they tell it. --- Not sure if this is what's going on with the guy, but I do wonder given his line of work. 🤔 It's the nicest interpretation I can think of, because otherwise he might just be a bulls**t artist 😬

This guy’s story is the exact reason I’m so glad that I found your channel. My first hooks into the cave diving rabbit hole were channels that told “incident” stories like these. While I think the ones I watched were all well-meaning and stuck to the “facts,” they were usually getting those facts from accounts like these or from basic public record, all interpreted and conveyed by a layperson with no actual technical diving or cave diving experience. The result was taking the original accounts (like this one) at their word with no additional perspective to frame it in context. If I thought the subject was interesting then, I had no idea what I was in for after finding actual experts. Sure, the “crazy dramatic” stories take on a much different light when you realize most of the life-or-death scenarios were completely preventable and unnecessary, but the loss of that “mystique” comes with a much greater appreciation for the techniques and science. The awe no longer comes from uninformed drama but from true respect for the intricacy of the sport and what people at the top of their game are able to accomplish. No Dateline thrill seeking theatrics necessary.

Like jam or peanut butter: the least you have, the more you need to spread it out.

31:55 this is the critical error (and major flaw in his story lol) - "the way I need to go, the direction the main line runs, is completely silted out while everything behind me is clear." So.... why not follow the main line into the silt? Why choose sight over feel? Follow the line. Visibility doesn't matter at that point. (Btw, chances are it's all silted up because your buddy just finned his ass through there at mach 3! ) Here's why. Because a quick "me and my buddy went into a cave, got tangled, freaked out, and left" is not a story worthy of a cowboy hat, let alone a Joe Rogan podcast. Sounds like amateur hour down there and they're both lucky to have made it out of a minor inconvenience.

They were in Aerolito Cenote. At 30 min I get the impression when he went into the stirred up area to look for his buddy he basically did the jump without a jump line passing his buddy as he did so, then when he said he had found the mainline he actually found the next mainline past the jump. That's why he had to leave it and go back in the stirred up area to pick up the first mainline, that's where he got lost and disorientated again. Why the hell he didn't use a jump line I have no idea. Perhaps he didn't have one and the guy he was with was planning to rig any jumps and he was just along as a passenger.

Yeah I’m no cave diver but it seemed clear to me that’s what Donald was saying. I agree there’s some issues and red flags with Donald’s story here, but it seems like their reactions in this video are largely based on a misunderstanding of what he’s saying. This is partially because Donald’s story is being told over dramatically, so it’s choppy and fragmentary and trying to keep suspense high, which is fine for entertainment but not great for a serious analysis, but also I think they’re a bit over focused on him being an idiot the whole Yeah I’m no cave diver but it seemed clear to me that’s what Donald was saying. It's amazing the difference between how you guys talk and how he does. He's like "guys like me go in and map the caves" when you guys are like "cave diving is cool, but those explorers dang they have balls". Is this dude even a cave explorer? Also, notice how he had two different absolutely miraculous navigation skills? The first was he remembered the literal direction of the exit so he could navigate with a compass and the second was he memorized the "crack" that lead to the exit. Nonesense. Bro got lost and made it out with luck. That whole "every man left behind rule" is literally the opposite of a rule. What would be the point of having a buddy if the rule was that if something goes wrong you don't go and help? I know that I probably subconsciously tell stories in a way that makes me look the best, so now I'm going to check myself the next time I tell a story. To be fair to him, it sounds like it was a very scary and confusing experience and he may not actually know what happened, so his mind kind of fills in the blanks with his own awesomeness as he's trying to retell the story.
@DIVETALK3 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right. This guy is not a cave explorer - nothing wrong with that, we are not explorers either - and your observations are dead on. I think he got lucky and got out because he wasn't super deep inside the cave. Also, I think some things from the story were probably added after the fact. It happens to me to, you start thinking about what you could have done if something happened and then you inject that into your story. So for example, after he was out of that cave and safe back at his resort, he was probably thinking about what he would;ve done if he was about to run out of air, "probably write a letter to my family" he thought, and then he injected it into the story. I don't know this for sure but we all do this.

DC talks as if the Dive Buddy was the one who fucked up, however it sounds like this Dive Buddy did just fine and got tangled up for a moment. Not a big deal. Then DC forgets about this dive buddy, and his dive-buddy makes it out of the cave with zero issues. Meanwhile DC's every-man-for-himself leads to DC getting lost.

Another awesome reaction video! I have seen this story on the JRE at least three times and now I have a totally new perspective on it. To the non-diver it sounds like his dive buddy put him in trouble, but in an educated divers perspective that is definitely not the case. Cowboy was the one who broke protocol and put himself into a dangerous situation while his friend actually did the right thing and stayed on the line and left the silt out safely. Thank you again for another education and hilarious vid! Keep up the great work, I love these!

Thank you for watching Dominic! It’s amazing how much can be learned when you know the all the facts. Cowboy tried to share a story where he tried to make himself sound like a badass diver but to us he just sounded like an inexperienced diver that should never go back inside a cave.

So, I had a serious accident wreck diving, and his story brought back a TON of PTSD… but I did a lot of rookie stuff that got me there, and so did this guy. I wonder if after this traumatic event, this is what he genuinely believes is what happened? The brain will do some amazing gymnastics to protect the ego. After my event I had to piece the story together based on the eye witness accounts.

4:28 When he says “I’m a super cave diver” I don’t think he meant it the way you guys reacted to it, saying it was ego. I think cowboy was trying to convey that he’s really into cave diving, not a “super qualified, bad ass, expert cave diver” He’s just really into it.
