@@Nefville I heard they can travel in groups of up to around 1000 individuals at times. Although, it's probably more common to encounter groups with only a few hundred members. Admittedly, deep water scares me. I've swam in open ocean, snorkled on coral heads, gone diving WWII wrecks in the south pacific, and been in a swarm if blacktips so thick it looked like a wall of sharks all around me. The only time I was ever terrified, was not noticing I had floated off the coralhead, and suddenly looking down to realize I was over a pitch black void. Having that perspective of watching the side of the coral just vanishing, and how far up I was, mixed with dozens of images in my mind of everything that could just appear out of the darkness to drag me down, scared me beyond all reason.

Im not a shark expert. But when they show you their full length, its usually a threat display. Basically its trying to tell you "I am this big, and Id like you to go away". Which I think are most of the "mistaken identity" bites we often hear about. GWs follow people all day every day. By the time its full size, a GW knows exactly what humans are. They know what it looks like, they know what it smells like, they know its electric signature, they know surf boards, swimmers and divers. And if you see it, its because its not trying to eat you. Else you wouldnt see it.

It's actually pretty common for sharks to approach lionfish hunters nowadays because it's a symbiotic relationship (sharks love lionfish snacks). Some sharks who have been around long enough will guide human hunters toward lionfish dens to spear them directly into the shark's mouth. I love the ocean.

I was kayaking on a river one summer with some friends. We did an overnight trip and on the last 4 miles on the second day, the current just…stopped. I grew up on this river and worked on it and knew the area well. All of us were just sitting, stationary in the middle of the river and the water started doing a similar motion to what was seen in number 9. It stopped after a few minutes and we continued on our way. Once we got of our cars and turned on our phones- we all had dozens of missed calls from our family and friends. There had been a earthquake….and the loss of current and weird water movements made sense. I truly wish that I had my phone on me!

Can you all talk about your thoughts on snuba? I did snuba in Cozumel and I had a regulator attached through a long hose to a tank floating in a raft on the surface (which was shared with one other person) and we went down to a max 20 ft. I also wore a weight belt. It was an awesome experience and makes me want to get scuba certified, but after watching many of your videos, it seems like there are safety issues with that. I mainly think of a regulator failure, unexpected out of air, or losing the regulator, which could result in someone bolting to the surface from 20 feet. We were taught never to hold our breath, but weren't taught any emergency skills if the regulator is lost (like blowing bubbles on ascent) and they didn't tell us why we shouldn't hold breath, so I didn't understand the risk (even at only 20 ft). Overall, I think the instructors did a good job and probably followed their PADI standards, but it seems like they could have done better at explaining those risks during the orientation briefing.

Hi guys!! Love your channel!! Long time diver from Vancouver Island here - just a comment on underwater vortex Absolutely real!!!!! Diving with my husband (my buddy) as part of large group- drift diving the reef We paired off from the group with another couple…. Drifting along, having a gorgeous dive - not too deep at approx 60ish’ when suddenly I was ripped away from my husband. I tried to swim down and grab rocks for stability and an anchor but it was like being thrown into a washing machine…… tossed up, down & sideways with no control whatsoever. I ended up a good 20-30’ deeper than when I started. My husband was thrown 50-70’ forward…..he had to fight his way as the current tried to surface him. Our other buddies were able to grab each other. They held on to each other’s BCD and were whisked off to places unknown. Only when the boat finally came in for our live pick up and saw their SMB in the wrong location did we realize how far they had been thrown. We were all very lucky that day because we had stuck to the reef and when this freak current came it didn’t blow us off the reef down the abyss. We ended up calling it “the washing machine “ Just as a note- My husband is an instructor & I’m a DM We have thousands of dives and we have never come across this phenomenon before or since . Strong current- sure. But up and down and dipsy doodles causing all of us to be slammed into the reef uncontrollably- No. so vortexes are real just not common 😊

Not quite the same as the guy left behind in the sea, but here in NZ Rob Hewitt(a former Navy diver) was lost at sea for 75 hours, after a rip pulled him away from the boat while diving.

I feel like Woody and Gus always poke fun at the videos making the ocean out to be terrifying and scary. But there are plenty of people who are deeply phobic of the sea. I’m not one of them, I think all that stuff is fascinating and exciting, but I definitely can understand why media often portrays the ocean and creatures down there as if it is horror content.

I’ve just finished two days of diving and a new DiveTalk video is just what I need! Thank you guys! And yes, lionfish are dumb. I’ve come across many of them in dives and they just sit there looking at you or slowly swimming. If I’d have felt brave I probably could have reached out to grab one (I know this is a horrible idea). I also had my first shark (not a great white, a leopard shark!) encounter today. It couldn’t have cared less about being approached by divers. It just sat and looked at us.

They're probably that dumb for the same reason they are so invasive, basically no predators to worry about.

I've heard of a group of world wide pros that came up to dive there. I'm told that 4 of them went down only to come up and find something they had never seen in the vastness of the world's oceans. Yet this whatever brought them all up unexpectedly after only 10 minutes. They all got out, took their gear off and left saying the would never be back, and recommended no one else dare go down. They said they would never return. I found an article in the local paper speaking about a locness type creature seen in the lakes.

Everyone has different levels of anxiety. Some people are so resilient, that they survive some unbelievable situations. Yet some, crumble under the least bit or turmoil. So who knows if someone might rather die than sit and wait for death. If I am convinced I am dead, I want it over with. Why sit and suffer? I can see someone doing it

No no no Gus! You don’t put the speargun behind your back and say come here cute fishy! You point the speargun at the great white shark and keep the weapon between the two of you. Keep turning so you can keep eye contact! If the white gets too close and bites for whatever reason it has to deal with pointy stick first. Plenty of examples of shark bites or attacks fended off by spearguns, surfboards, cameras, and other items! Stay safe!

I’ve never done scuba diving or anything but one of my biggest dreams was to cage dive with sharks. I was told I won’t be able to as I have asthma so that sucks but I was glad to hear woody say he’d like to see sharks. I hope you get to have your moment

Man I love this channel, I love the comradery between you guys and I love to see how much you guys love the ocean and other waterways across the world. I hope to get to meet yall one day. Maybe Ill get over my fear of the ocean at some point, lol Im ok in freshwater as long as there are no alligators haha. Idk why but ever since 18 yrs old I get panic attacks if I try to go out in the ocean its weird bc I grew up on the gulf coast and I remember swimming all in the ocean and the bay, Id see how far I could go away from shore and stuff but I won't go past ankle deep today. Its crazy how that happens for no reason

We actually always bring a speargun when hunting lionfish along with a polespear. For two reasons one is if we happen to see a big snapper or grouper we have the gun for more power. Also for protection in case we need something sturdy to push a shark away if they get too curious

Be prepared to be scared of....basking sharks and lantern fish. The truly most deadly things on earth
