You won't be crushed at any depth if your body is at the same pressure, which it will be in this scenario since he is diving and not using an external pressure vessel. The reason a person in a submarine, or that newt suit, would be crushed, is that their body is at 1 atmosphere. So when the pressure vessel fails at lets say 100 atmosphere, the body has no time to adjust to the 100 fold increase in pressure, all your air filled cavities will be squished in to 1/100 of their current size in the blink of an eye so that the pressure equalizes.

So, I live in a city full of engineers. And whenever I see someone question "well, XYZ person was so academically accomplished. How could they make such a dumb decision?" 1.) intelligence does not equal common Sense. I know some incredibly intelligent people I would not trust to take care of a pet rock. 2.) Because they're used to being right and accomplishing things quickly, the idea that they might be wrong about something does not occur to them. 3.) They don't consider the people criticizing them to be on their same level so they don't listen to them. My brother-in-law, an engineer, had an issue. Me, who couldn't do math if you put a gun to my head, knew the solution to the problem because of experience. He did not believe me. He did not believe me for months but believed his engineer friend when he gave literally the exact same solution I had been telling him.

according to article: How Deep Can you Dive Before Being Crushed? Human bone crushes at about 11159 kg per square inch. This means we’d have to dive to about 35.5 km depth before bone crushes. This is three times as deep as the deepest point in our ocean.

In regards to the discussion around 12:00, I believe the answer is that you don't get crushed by the pressure when you're at depth because you're mostly water and water is incompressible, but if you're in a pressure vessel at depth with a comparatively low pressure inside (eg, 1 atmosphere) and that pressure vessel fails you'll be crushed to death by how quickly and powerfully the water breaches into that vessel.

In hydraulics/pneumatics we learned that fluid has very low compressibility as in 1 or 2%, whereas air compresses much more so. The water barely compresses at depths while gases absolutely compress under pressure just like an air compressor in your garage

Woody- my dad had a bulging herniated disc recently and was unable to drive, sit down to eat, anything, for weeks due to the pain. He saw several dr's and chiropractors, PT's, and finally one with a machine that works like those inversion tables you can flip upside down in did 20 sessions with the computer using the MRI results to say how far to decompress to get bloodflow to the herniated disc, and it fixed him. He was almost 100% at the end and was told it's ok to use an inversion table at home and come back every 2-4 weeks for maintenance. Dad said the computerized machine is called "a something 9,000" (something like that). I can find out specifically if you ask me to. A family friend did this with that same dr first and felt his back go back in place on his 17th visit. (You go 2-3x a week and it was not covered by insurance.) I hope you get better soon. I have degenerative disc, since age 19, and I know your pain.

Spinal decompression may help relieve the pain! I’m 66 years old, herniated L4-L5 in my mid 30’s and was nearly paralyzed from the waist down for 2-weeks, but did not have surgery. I’ve continued to irritate those two discs several times each year. I’ve found hanging from a roman chair (exercise equipment) using arm slings decompresses my discs. I do this for only a couple of minutes any time my discs bother me. Instant pain relief for hours and greatly speeds recovery. Best of luck Woody!

had a back surgery at 57 and at 61 was addicted to opiates for pain. Broke free from the opiates (brutal) but found out the only thing that touches and lowers the pain are the opiates. So now I struggle with constant pain. However, the process of learning to delegate physical tasks to the guys who work for me was a life changer. I don’t think in my whole life I ever asked anyone for help. When I was broke I worked two jobs and most of them were physically demanding. I am the boss and worker who is like “out of the way I’ll do it myself.”. I moved a few times and refused to hire a moving company. I thought we know how oxygen toxicity occurs. Based on what I remember and understand from reading Dr Richard Vann, oxygen in combination with food supples body with energy, but also this combination produces free radicals which are generally toxic for us, but our body has antioxidants that neutralize them. So when there is more oxygen in the blood than antioxidants able to neutralize, then these toxic free radicals in excess amounts go down the cerebral flow to the brain. This causing oxygen toxicity

Maybe more useful hydrogen diving data could be collected if some divers would mix hydrogen into their mix for less deep dives. Start with adding a few % (non-explosive mixture) into trimix, even for normoxic trimix diving. Just remember hydrogen embrittlement shortening the livespan of tanks, valves etc (idk if it's still an issue with just a few % of it, this could also be a point of study). On the bright side, hydrogen is a lot cheaper than helium. And woody, no, a hydrogen bomb is a nuke based on special neutron-enriched hydrogen. Normal hydrogen just goes boom like a conventional bomb if mixed with oxygen in the right ratios.

Put me in the hospital for 1-2wks. for pain control. I know what the nerve pain+muscle spasms feel like. It’s agony. Love you-Gus too-and praying for you.

What could possibly go wrong to anyone that has the nickname "Doc Deep". I'm only 3 minutes in this video and I already know I'm in for a good show! Thousands of dives and a TDI certification in Advanced TriMix and I'm only known as "Parker". This guy must be Da Diving Bomb!!!!!! In case anyone needs to be reminded: "Your ego and deep technical diving do not mix."

About toxicity of oxygen. Basically, when you inhale high concentration of oxygen at 4 bar, your cells are overwhelmed with the fuel (oxygen) and die because they are unable to reprocess it in time.

Yeah. Oxygen is toxic, strangely enough, even at normal pressures. Even more so when free oxygen radicals are formed and those destroy everything if not neutralized. It good is good at doing so, but not perfect. Probably one of the reasons why we age.

I remember hearing this story back in 2017-ish (already two years old by then) and tracking down some of the contemporaneous forums that were happening during his prep and immediately afterwards, before his recovery. There was SO much controversy about the whole thing--for example Garman refused to publish his mix plan before or after, had a shockingly low number of dives under his belt, hadn't done any super-deep dives himself, had surrounded himself with hype men, etc. He also had a GoPro and asked that the footage be released even if he dies, but his family refused to. Also, there was some additional controversy about how his body originally wasn't going to be retrieved, but the local government made the family do it (by pulling up the line) or called in the Navy or something. I don't recall the specifics, but it was odd. The forums at the time were sad for his death but really not complimentary about the plan, the secrecy, the goal, his egoism, etc.

Take it easy Woodie, the body betrays the mind.. My Dad herniated a disk. Doctor told him no strenuous stuff and he'd be OK. But Dad, feeling invincible, decided to push a stalled car to the side of the road. Needed surgery then.

Interesting how, your channel is so well done and intense, that seeing this drop at 0500 my time was much too heavy to digest first thing in the morning. I"ll circle back to this after 9PM when I've had a cocktail to relax. 😕

been wanting to get a scuba licence and go do it alot recently, watching videos where things go wrong are genuinley the most educational things for me. shows how wrong things can really go if you dont give the water and the equipment and your body the respect it deserves and needs

FYI, you guys are saying he’s not being crushed because the drysuit can inflate to offset the pressure. His head isn’t in the drysuit and you don’t feel the pressure on your head ? I think your right, water pressure only effects trapped air cavity’s… hints why equalizing ears is a thing.

Tremors occur due to lack of nitrogen in the gas mixture, which is supposed to calm the nervous system. But nitrogen is a heavy gas and at that depth having an additional percent of nitrogen would bring the gas density to a higher number than 6 gr / l and would cause an increased WOB and hypercapnia. Therefore he may have removed nitrogen completely or left a tiny amount of it in his gas mixture, so that most of the gas partial pressure consists from light helium and does not exceed the proper density. My assumption is that he must have known that diving at this depth brings him a choice: ether experiencing HPNS (not enough nitrogen) or experiencing hypercapnia (enough nitrogen). of course he would have chosen the first option and could have prepared a backup plan, which he actually might have executed perfectly by stopping the descent before HPNS could start effecting his cognitive function.

This was fascinating although sad, i actually like it when you explain the po2 stuff at the beginning as it helps set up the rest of the video for me. If he drowned is it because he has had a convulsion underwater and lost is reg? :(

Doctors I think suffer from some delusions normal people don’t. I work at a jewelry store, had a doctor bring in a a mid end watch for a battery change that he tried to do himself, he damaged the watch and it was a bit more than half the cost of the watch to repair. We would have changed the battery for $15, the repair was just shy of 100x that cost. But the doc knows best, really made me question my GPs judgement after ( and he wasn’t the guy that messed up)

Only way to do that safely is with a commercial saturation diving bell. Then have a support team who could bring him into the bell where he doesn't have to decompress.
