Today we react to a caving video from England. THis took place back in 2014 and depicts a small team of cavers exploring passages inside Lost Johns Cave. One of the divers gets completely stuck inside "The Tube" and starts to panic as water rises towards his face!

Maybe they could find a different commentator than an all out wussy. I've only watched two videos of these guys and in both is gus whining and crying about how he wouldn't do this or that. I don't think he's been in any water than a swimming pool. And im sure that made him very nervous worrying that an earthquake will cause thr pool to split open and swallow them alive.

Right? You'll see videos of Gus talking about how calm and controlled he is during his dives. He doesn't panic, and he's self-assured. While he's saying all this, video plays of some of the most claustrophobia-inducing 100+ foot depth madness my brain can healthily digest without hyperventilating myself...But even before the first step in the Lost John's cave journey: "NOPE!" ALSO: in that same video, (I want to say it's when they're reacting to MrBallen + Mike Young...can't be sure), Gus mentions that it's critical viewers don't get the wrong idea that cave diving is ultimately too dangerous and therefore shouldn't be tackled. But in THIS video, he's all about the fear-mongering haha. My initial thoughts as to why this is: Gus places more fear in gravity and his own physical ability to defy it (climbing/repelling), over drowning, maintaining neutral buoyancy, calculating correct gas mixtures, planning spare tanks, placing 100% trust in maintaining connection with guidelines, decomp stops...it's bonkers to me, but he just needs more confidence. Not much, I'd say. Cave diving is fraught with dangers.

I'm a plumber and have been in a few claustrophobic situations. The one that comes to mind the most was doing a water repipe underneath a pier and beam house. There was only about 13" of overhead clearance in the back part where I was working and on top of that there was fiberglass insulation all hanging down and completely obscuring my view to the exit. It came on suddenly and intensely I was surprised at how quickly panic took my mind. Began hyperventilating and suddenly everything around me began to close in and get tighter, I felt like there was no oxygen down there (ridiculous in hindsight of course there was plenty of oxygen) and I just started kicking and freaking out and trying to back out the way I came but became stuck for a few moments due to my own panic that's when the fear really got me and I ended up kicking my coworker in the face to get him to move lol. He's a friend and didn't take it personally but let me tell you when panic sets in it completely takes over. I felt that there was a tipping point when I actually let the panic in, I could have remained calm but I just let the unreasonable thoughts win and that's when you lose control

Gus is an instant dry-caver - just add water! :) Btw I get why dry-caving seems horrible to him. In diving you don´t have the risk of slipping and breaking an ankle, or breaking a foot, or falling into a crevasse. Also you feel weightless, you can move with much less effort. In a dry cave "ascending" is hard work/ climbing. In diving it is floating - which feels safer since you don´t have the feeling of " I don´t have the strength/ energy to do that and I´m going to get stuck". And yes I know, that swimming requires some fitness, and that (technical) diving gear is heavy and you also need at least some level of fittness to do it and move around cylinders all day.

@@alanhillyard1639 It's a personal judgement call based on how tight it feels and what you see in front of you. If it gets tighter and tighter with no end in sight, that's when you back out. The most important part is to remain calm. In certain squeezes you may move centimeter by centimeter (literally), which is normal. There are 3 important rules when crawling through tight spaces: 1) have at least one arm in front of you (I always have both of them in front of me) so your cross section is smaller and you can use your arms to push/pull yourself 2) never enter head first in a descending passage 3) always tell someone where you are and where are you suppose to return

I do scuba dive (just open water) and I think a big difference between dry caving and anything underwater has to do with the feeling of being weightless. It's almost like floating. From this perspective, I totally see the difference between wet and dry caving for Gus. The difference has less to do with claustrophobia and more to do with how much work it takes to crawl on your belly or get out of a jam in a dry cave versus wiggling and frog kicking while weightless. The two ventures do share a lot of commonalities -strong social communities -a necessity in being a team player -importance of proper planning and training -benefit to calming your mind and thinking "How can I" -an appreciation for the natural world that is only seen by a small handful of people

Caver here. That looks like a great and fun cave! Apart from the basic safety precaution, and planning. The one thing we usually worry and pay attention is flood flash, that can turn the situation into dangerous really really fast. The thing about dry caving is that you can push the extremes of tightness further, and that's what they do, making it way more claustrophobic. You don't "squeeze through" stuff in underwater caves because that will risk your equipment and getting stuck for even a while can be a death sentence already.

So sometimes I went in on my belly and I could do some work that way. And that wasn't so bad because I could still raise my head and see outside. But sometimes I had to crawl under it on my back and I got so claustrophobic I just had to get out right away. I have never experienced claustrophobia like that and I was shaking in my whole body once outside. And that was on ground level and like 3 meters to get out. that really isn't a good feature to have. you should always try to stay calm and collected, no matter the situation. panic and anxiety will impair your rational thinking and decision making, which almost always gets you even deeper into trouble. a slightly suboptimal situation can turn into living hell pretty quickly that way, if you're not careful. but i know what you're going to say now "i'm going to be fine, i just stay away from trouble and danger". the thing is, you never know what the future might bring and don't forget, trouble and danger can come to you as well. it's not always going to be the other way around. if a baddy wants to rob you, he's not going to ask beforehand wether or not you're fine with it. long story short, try not to be the person everyone would hate be with, when shit hits the fan.

I am so glad I found this video; Gus is hilarious and I absolutely love the playful interaction between the three of you. With the current morbid and serious state of our world, I am grateful to you gentlemen for allowing me a brief reprieve from reality to wear an honest and amused smile throughout the duration of this video. Take care, all! :)

Gus is like a humble guy,he does not deny his weaknesses in his profession like...a Pro who knows his own limits and does NOT deny it.I mean,Some can act tough but in their minds they are evaporating from fear.

I completely understand Gus' hesitation: it's one thing being in a cave while completely buoyant in water, this gives you complete control over motion. In a dry cave, however, you're now also fighting gravity, friction is a bigger issue when shimmying through crevasses... It just seems like so much more can go wrong while spelunking than cave diving...

I think it's different things that can go wrong. Cave diving seems to require a lot more planning and equipment, knowledge though.

@@near--zero This is probably a big part of it. Underwater caving has a functional barrier of knowledge, you can't just jump into water and get lost without at least some basic equipment and hearing the safety rules from someone. But anyone with sneakers can wander through a cave on total impulse and get themselves into a terrible situation. As awful as it sounds to say, at least underwater you know you'll die from drowning. In a dry cave you're likely to fall to dehydration, starvation, or hypothermia.
