Funny they're actually one of my favorite factions. I like the chaff tactics, and being the gatekeeper between Eriador and Rhovanion gives you a ton of options. Like you said, you can approach the campaign in a bunch of different ways. They could use a few more scripted events though, that's for sure.

I reckon a good idea, for the Goblins of the Misty Mountains would be a system of sorts in which you could if you have the one ring you can give it to the Balrog. He can then master it since he too is a Maiar and is still whole. Take the power for himself and begin to raise the Goblins as a sort of counter like a full on counter to Sauron or i suppose as like another Dark Lord.

Pro tip, Flame Wrangler in javelin range dumps the shot straight to enemy, so keep some halberds or chaff in front of it and dump those barrels in front of them, that way you don't miss shots that much and it decimates everything. Also you can always use snagas in front of your armies in loose formation and wide line to stop the enemy advance and bombard that line with flame wranglers, when the snaga runs, throw next snaga in to hold that few seconds and take the enemy javs and arrows while your arty and crossbows shoot.

a case for the schiltron: defense in depth formations. they are much better at it than the standard shield-wall. the shield-wall due to how formations wrap around each other and how it uses it's mass to engage and push into the enemy formation will generally cause the enemy to not really surround the unit even if they have a wider frontage, they will prefer to fight line to line. and if they do wrap around the shield wall you get the flanked penalties. meanwhile the schiltron is immune to those AND it makes the enemy line bend around it, surround it. which often means a large volume of the enemy formation is perfectly visible to whatever you have standing behind the porous frontline of schiltrons. enjoy your flat trajectory close range flanking archer fire that makes even the atrocious goblin archers decimate high tier units. To say nothing of what you can do with a close range flame wrangler shot when it just dups it's load almost horizontally. or just shove wargs or shock infantry into the gaps to hammer the enemy. schiltron allows you to do that much better than shield wall. even with a faction like rohan, why frontally charge my eored into uruks when I can get the uruks to bunch up around some peasants and charge their flanks? With moria the qustion is "why suffer atrocious casualties and be reliant on risky goblin wave tactics when a modicum of tactics can ensure I get positive K/D rations even against the high elves". Would be fun though if the game had the ability to simulate both the popular circular schiltron for defensive holding and the square schiltron the scots used at bannockburn to advance on the english army. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6uci4Sribp3bdU for reference.

@names_are_useless Жыл бұрын
I look forward to an updated Moria in v6. I have to imagine the update will include a Balrog Script. If it were up to me, here's how I'd do the Balrog Script: * After Balin's Attack AND after building a Mithril Mine (so shouldn't be a default build) in Khazad-Dum, every turn you have a % chance to trigger the "Awaken the Balrog" script. * Awaken the Balrog: The Balrog is grumpy that you have awoken it and is climbing up into Moria. You have to choose how you will respond. You will have 2 Options: 1. Fight Durin's Bane: The Balrog is an enemy and a threat to Chieftain Uglag's Power (or whoever is in charge of your faction at the time). Chieftain Uglag was sent by Sauron to Moria to lead the ragtag Goblins and will continue to do so. A small percentage of your Army will turn Rebel, siding with the Rebel Balrog. The Rebel Balrog, with some rebel Goblins around Khazad-Dum and Khazad-Dum West, will attack Khazad-Dum. After defeating The Balrog, your commander that leads to The Balrog's death should gain a "Balrog Slayer" trait, which should be a pretty big bonus. You also gain access to specialized Uruk Units, as Sauron is pleased with your decision. Lastly, you also gain positive faction influence with Mordor. In my headcanon: Sauron and Gothmog (King of the Balrogs) were both Lieutenants to Melkor in the First Age, and so Sauron isn't too fond of Balrogs themselves (they've never worked under him). This should be the easier choice. 2. Worship Durin's Bane: You can choose to worship the Balrog, Durin's Bane. Your current Faction Leader, and a majority of your army, will turn Rebel, fighting alongside your old Faction Leader. The Rebel Faction Leader, and Rebels around the area, will attack Khazad-Dum. Durin's Bane becomes your Faction Leader, with his bodyguard called "Nameless Ones" (basically "nameless things" from the books; they can basically be "mini balrogs" so there is only 1 true Balrog but the units themselves can still be a similar scale to him); they should probably be the best "monstrous infantry" in the game. After defeating the old Faction Leader, you gain access to some new Elite Goblin Units (one idea I had was a type of "Goblin Berserker" with low armor but high damage, and a "Goblin Zealot" that gives major buffs to your army, all representing Goblin fanatics of The Barlog). Sauron, seeing Durin's Bane as a threat to his power, you gain negative faction influence with Mordor (maybe they even become an Enemy towards Moria). This should be the harder choice. I've also thought there should be a specialized event attached to conquering Goblin-town: * Conquering the settlement (while The Balrog isn't your Faction Leader) should give your Faction Leader the title of "King", basically showing that you've united the Goblins and have become the new "Goblin King", giving your Faction Leader some positive traits. Maybe also have some various Goblin Units populate in the settlement, representing the Goblins flocking under the banner of their new Goblin King. * Could be a cool nod if Goblin Town had the weird deformed Goblins in the style of the ones in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (not sure what could be unique about them at the moment). Conquering Goblin Town could unlock these specialized Goblins Units.

I don't like your ideas because they use your headcanon which doesn't make sense. Also the way you've written it doesn't make sense either. Lack of punctuation. More so, you also wrote that attacking the balrog should be the harder choice, and the easier choice. Then went to say that siding with it should also be the harder choice. So which is which?
@names_are_useless Жыл бұрын
@@VenomGamingCenter I fixed the Comment so it's more clear which is the Easier and which the Harder Choice. What doesn't make sense about the headcannon I've used? I know I'm not the only Tolkien Fan that has speculated on the relationship between Sauron and the Balrogs, and it's generally agreed that the Balrogs never worked under Sauron. If Durin's Bane would willingly work for Sauron, why wouldn't Sauron have called him to Mordor to serve in his Army? Why did Sauron and Gothmog hold the same rank under Melkor? It honestly makes sense that powerful Maiar like Balrogs didn't serve under Sauron (much like how Saruman, a powerful Maiar, was out for himself). What punctuation do you want me to add? I'd be happy to add since I can edit my Comment (not that KZbin Comments are a good place for such).

When you talked about Orc factions lacking a crossbow unit you somehow forgot Isengard. As for the Azog Defilers, they're definitely a highlight, arguably the only true highlight, of the Goblin roster. Ironically enough the existence of Azog's Defilers is actually an incredibly good reason to play as Gundabad rather than the Goblins of Moria, and take Khazad Dum East and West to recruit them, into a much stronger faction. It's the only truly elite unit unlocked by Gundabad's unique mechanic that entices them go betray the other evil factions, the rest of the units they can get are nice to have at best, throwaways at worst, whereas the Azog's Defilers are truly special and fit incredibly well into Gundabad's roster. Also being recruitable from 2 settlements rather than the usual 1 is another massive boon for that strategy.

Snaga are the best units in the game. I mass stacks of them and attack 1 enemy stack with 3-6 of snaga stacks. Mountain Orc Hunters are Dwarve killers. I use them to hammer enemies from behind while a high armor unit is the anvil and holds the enemy. Hunters will slice through Dwarves or any heavily armored units. The power of the Orcs of Moria is that they can out spam any other faction. No other nation can match their numbers. Elves bring 1 stack, you bring 6 and attack all at once, GG, you win.

@fitz12ify10 ай бұрын
I think additions that can work to make Goblins of Moria more interesting to the players is giving them a cool story so the player has objectives to fullfil. So not necessarily buffing them in the units department. So I'm thinking script based things. For example, a script that fires after you win a battle against the High Elves (battle defined as fighting agaist at least 4 elf units). Then storywise (and this is made up stuff not necessarily lore bounded) Sauron sends them a Uruk general with the mission of taking Rivendel, so in game, that battle reveled the location of Imladris and Sauron wants to direct an attack there. This general has some good high tier Uruk unit as a bodyguard and some good ability and some special traits. Something along the line of "Scourge of Imladris", this trait gives him extra comand and his units better defence and attack while fighting in the Imladris battle map. And if you do win and take Imladris then this general gains the trait "Tyrant of Imladris" where he gains governability options when he is governor of Imladris, something like +3% pop growt, +5% income increase, +10% public order. So the player has the option of either keep using him in battlefield or just leave him to govern Imladris (of course all of his speciall trait can be adjusted to be interesting enough while at the same time not being overpowered). Other script can be named " Down Down to Goblin Town" so its a special script that makes interesting to go and reclaim Gobling Town. Storywise (also made up stuff) the Gobling King that was allied with the Moria Goblings was overthrown, in one of the many infights goblings have, thats why Goblin town its not part of Moria. So when you go and retake Gobling Town a script fire where you get two generals (or more accurately a general and a governor). The governor is the Gobling King (that big dude from the Hobbit movies), he has the generic gobling general bodyguard and fightingwise he is not something exceptional, more like a generic commander (like the ones you get through adoption), he is slow and doesn't have a good range of movement in the strategic map (so an army with him as a commander gets to places slower so even getting to Cameth Brin from Gobling town is 3 turns) but he gets superb governability traits and special things when he is placed at Gobling town, things like discount gold and time when building buildings. The other general (a made up character) is a crossbow warg rider general, with god command and special traits towards fighting (so if you get him he is a top 3 commander for your faction), and some special niche traits towards raiding and ambushing. Like when ambushing he gets more command, and after winning small battles he gets double booty from sacking the enemy camp. Also, this scipt from retaking Gobling Town generates two full staks of gobling snaga (melee and missils) one in the fort west of Gobling Town and one in the fort east of Gobling Town, representing the host loyal to the Gobling King (so nothing strong, but something that adds flavor). As well, give them a special building centered around West Khazad Dum, and only available when holding both Khazad Dum. So this building gives the usual income buff, maybe other things like aditional recruitment slots. But also the access to some next level armour but an armour that visually changes the model of the units so they get those bones ornaments they have in the movies and this armour adds some frightening trait to Goblins of Moria units, this armour is called Misty Mountains Armour or something like that. So things like this that hides eastereggs and small objectives to the player could make Goblins of Moria more interesting to the player.

I really don't like characters that have tier 1 or even weak tier 2 units as their bodyguards, and the Goblins are 1 of the factions that suffer the most from this trend. Bodyguards are supposed to well, guard, and weak tier 1 and tier 2 units simply can't do that properly. It's a shame really as there is a massive discrepancy between those weak tier 1/2 bodyguards, the tier 3/4 bodyguards and the special(aka unique) ones which tend to be tier 3/4 as well. It makes certain factions significantly stronger and others significantly weaker even before delving into the various traits, ancillaries, etc. Regarding Schiltrom, it's actually quite solid. What you consider a tactical blunder: allowing your unit to get surrounded, I see as a stratagem, You see, when 1 unit gets surrounded all the units surrounding it can now be surrounded themselves. The biggest obstacle is actually the quality of the spear units that gain the Schiltrom formation as the good spear units tend to get shield wall instead of it. Therefore you either need your Schiltrom unit to be fully surrounded to trigger 'fight to the death' mode due to no escape avenue or rely on a general's ability to morale lock the Schiltrom unit to keep it in the first. With so many morale penalties(being surrounded on all sides, taking damage, etc) and the general low quality of Schiltrom capable units morale boosts alone generally don't cut it(maybe there are a few rare examples when they do). Still, if it's a cheap spear units like the Goblin's even if it stops fighting and tries to run if it's surrounded with enough units it will still struggle to get away and still achieve the same result so it's not all bad.
