I have a patch of muscari (grape hyacinths) that has stopped blooming. I know that means it is time to divide the bulbs. Autumn is the perfect time to do that. I also just picked up a bag of tulip bulbs at the nursery that I think will look beautiful with the muscari. So I'm going to plant the two together so that I have a nice display next spring.

That's great! I love forcing bulbs. So rewarding in the end of winter to bring a touch of spring inside. 🤠

Thanks I have a small area with shallow soil and I hadn't known this before digging out my beds for spring, I was wondering if muscari would work and now I'm happily planning to use them there and graduate them with some tulips! Can't wait to see how this works out but feeling a lot better about finding a workable and beautiful solution to my problem!

Great share. Highly recommend a 'Hori Hori' for working the soil; it's designed for tough soil as shown.

Wonderful video let me tell you i am a big fan of Tulips, Hyacinths, Crocus, Muscari, Daffodils, Narcissus, Dutch Iris, Scilla although i live in a place (Kolkata, India) where it is difficult to grow as we have mild winter and mostly summer. Last year i chilled all my bulbs in refrigerator and forced them on water and was thrilled to see them flower with amazing display of color and scent, however, this year my confidence has boosted a lot and have purchased lot more bulbs from online but irony is we don't get this good quality large bulbs which you showed in your screen hence have to be satisfied with whatever i get and due to this love for my winter flower bulb i am planning to switch to Netherlands or any cold country for my job...... Its strange but its fact.

Thank you for that interesting comment. I love to hear about what other people experience. I think it is great that we can share experiences from around the world about a shared passion. I understand how you feel about the bulbs better suited to cold climates. I feel that way about some more tropical plants. We might be able to grow them for a few months as small pot fillers, but in their natural climate they can be large plants or bushes! Take care. Good luck in your quest for the perfect job location to indulge your passion.

Thank you for the tip about dividing. I have them too.i love the fragerance that they produce. Before you know it spring will be back with us again. Just a thought... Do you ever force tulip and daffodil bulbs for the winter time to enjoy inside?

Thank you. I often have a few forced bulbs over the winter. I actually have a few bulbs sitting in the refrigerator right now. I also recently purchased 400 bulbs (200 each tulip and daffodil) so a few went in the ground but many will be forced. Take care.

I have planted a patch of muscari but can only see foliage and blooms (if they even come out) seem to have very short stalks. I don't think I planted them too deep - it looks very similar to what you've done. Why wouldn't they be blooming or have shorter stalks? This is their first season.. Any advice would be much welcome

Muscari usually grows leaves in summer and autumn. It will bloom in spring. Often after moving they might need a year or two to settle in before performing their best. Moving can cause them to use energy (that may have gone to blooming) for settling and growing roots or regrowing foliage. A little bonemeal or bulb fertilizer after blooming can help give them a boost.

@@PrairiePlantgirl well its minus 2 c this morning, but l did water them during the summer with a liquid feed so maybe that has something to do with it. Moreover the weather has been crazy over the last few seasons we have had weather records broken for nearly every month or at for least seasons. Last December was the least sunshine on record since 1916 follow by a sunshine record breaking January. Last May was record breaking coldest, so much so l had miniature daffodils still flowering in the second of June in my front garden, Ithen on the third everything got crazy hot. In 2020 in our region we broke so many records we had one month which was the wettest which was followed by the driest on record the next month. We went months without rain that year in East Sussex.. Bad timing on my part because l planted a new border nearly 200 plants l grew from plugs , also planted 70 bare roots plants and countless spring and summer bulbs . I seemed to have spent the whole summer just watering. Oh well that's climate change for you l guess!!!!. PS Happy gardening.

That is going to be gorgeous. I hope that ash tree in that clay is at least 30 feet away from your house. Ash trees can suck up an enormous amount of water shrink the clay under your house leaving a void that will crack your foundation. I used to manage a condo townhouse subdivision in Ottawa, and we had two cracked foundations every year for 3 years, that it was exceptionally dry, all caused by ash trees.

Thank you. The ash trees are 20’ out. These ones are recommended by the city arborist for planting on boulevards and near houses so hopefully we don’t regret them. They are beautiful trees.
