I watched your video last summer and followed your suggestions while dividing my daylilies. Every one of them thrived.

Super video, Stu! Dividing clumps that size always seems somewhat akin to Sumo wrestling but you made it look easy : -) It would surely be nice if all of us who have to do this had such a super washing table and dividing knife ( I've broken several "regular" knives when trying to divide daylilies.) Loved seeing your garden again - what a showplace. Thanks for sharing.

Great video, You mention clay soil... Apparently you have done a bang up job of amending it. Here in Dallas, my soil looks like clay we used to play with as kids.

I lve i zone 8. I would like to know what your dirt consist of. Mine are never that full.

Not how I do it. I take a sharp spade and cut the clump in half while it's still in the ground and then dig out the half while leaving the other half in the ground. The removed half can now be immediately replanted or halved again or even quartered depending on how many fans you have. A lot easier then digging out those "monster" clumps! You cannot hurt daylilies. I leave my clumps in a tub of water for a few hours and allow the dirt to completely dissolve around it. Then you can prune the roots and pull out any weeds/grasses that are tangled in the roots very easily. I've left them out of the ground for several days w/o any ill effects. The perfect garden plant in my opinion and I grow LOTS of them!!!

I live in Canada zone 4 most time they say to wait till last flower blooms, but you say its ok to divide in spring. Mine are just about a foot high and would like to separate now would it be ok to do it now
@sergiouni23 жыл бұрын
you have to let the roots at least 01 or 2 days at the sun, to make sure the cuts heals a bit, planting immediately might create sickness, rotten , ect that's the way pros do

Question: I have several clumps that I'd like to divide. I also have a row of evergreens that could really use some beauty in their neck of the yard. I've heard lilies do well in such soil. Would that include daylilies?
@daylilysociety4 жыл бұрын
Daylilies do well in many types of soil including heavy clay. In very porous soils daylilies will want more water. And if daylilies are competing with shallow evergreen roots they will also enjoy more water.

Thankyou hemdig for an easy to follow video, may I ask what brand is the gardening knife or how long is the blade?
@daylilysociety4 жыл бұрын
The brand is "I made it myself". I like to use the knife but other inexpensive tools work too. In a pinch I use a daffodil digger or a screwdriver.

I love the intricacy and care used when dividing your plants! I believe the more the better.. Even if it takes a little extra time to divide them this way.. Its a lot healthier and easier on the plants. .. Either way..Im located in ohio and All i ever see are the orangish daylilies.. thats it ..i would love to have a mix. ive hardly seen any at all in my city.. I literally think there are only 4 properties here that have the white ones ... and not many at that.. they used to grow wild all throughout ohio orange yellow and white.. .its like other colors have gone extinct here lol.. .Anyways if you ever feel YOU HAVE TOO MANY .. I would be more than happy to take some off your hands .. you can just send them my way lol..

I diveded mine 3 years ago and still no flowers. only green leaves... wonder why?
@stuartkendig62627 жыл бұрын
They should have bloomed the 1st year. Are the daylilies in full sun?
@deniseschreiber72884 жыл бұрын
You may have also planted them too deep. You should just have them planted right where the leaves turn green. If it is deeper, they will only push out leaves.

Sunniva I bought some from a fellow up here in Maine they took seven years to flower and I have great soil that I've made from scratch I never could figure it out but I just ignored them after a while and one year they just exploded I'm dividing them now which is why I looked up this video. I don't know why it happened that way it doesn't make any sense so either you can move them or leave them alone and maybe get some other ones in the meantime. I had five different clumps which were actually not that clumped because I bought them from someone who had divided them who grew them for a living. When I had planted them seven years before I put them in various spots around yard--some with more sun than others, different types of soil, probably different care and they all took 7 yrs to bloom! Best of luck

Can I plant each one of those tubers and it will make a plant, like a potato? I want to make a LOT of daylily plants to cover a hillside.
@hemdig7 жыл бұрын
Daylilies are not tubers but you can divide them and create many more plants. The most important part of the daylily plant is the meristem, which is where the roots and the foliage and the scape intersect. if you have the meristem and a little root you can grow another, identical, daylily.

I want to transfer my daylillie to another garden as I am adding landscaping and will not be able to keep daylillie. Will it be successful to transfer plant in beginning of August? I live in midwest.
@hemdig8 жыл бұрын
Daylilies can be transplanted in August but they will want to be watered a lot.
