In this world of calculators, people forget how to do elemental math. My math professors hated calculators and only permitted them when it is essential such as logs and grafts. In college algebra I remember half the exam was without calculators--you had to do all the math with scratch paper alone, which was provided. The other half was the scientific calculator which only the school provided. A person really needs to keep on doing elemental math without a calculator to train their brain to start thinking mathematically. Before the days of calculators slide rules were used. Slide rulers eventually vanished during the late 70's.
