Sounds like they require quite a bit of maintainance every so often with the dividing of bulbs but worth it with those big tubular flowers high up on big stems - I would assume that hawkmoths at night visit the flowers as they generally like tubular white flowers which they can see well at night.

Very cool! Looked them up online and they're magnificent plants. Sure hope yours do well in the new location. As for the sad state of the first group, and the bit of rot on the second, my thoughts are that it's got a lot to do with the drought. Second group, the soil was far wetter, much more to their liking hence more bulbs. As for the bit of rot on the bilbs, it's been my experience that when conditions aren't good for a plant (like your drought), it's immune system gets out of whack and it becomes susceptible to bacteria, fungus and diseases it would shake off no problem under regular circumstances. Think too that the microorganisms in your soil, are prolly a lot different this year than in years past due to the change of weather. Different soil conditions, different soil microbiome! In any case, thanks for the video! Always fun to see what plant stuff you're up to! 🌱

That is a good theory and may have a lot of truth in it. I do hope next year will be back to normal but we never know these days. Have a great weekend, Laurie, and take care.

Seems a bit like digging up Dahlia sometimes. You plant them out, get a nice sized plant that flowers well, then you dig them in the fall and there's almost no tuber for the next season. Meanwhile the plant next to it, that might be the same variety, produces a huge group of tubers that you can divide since one was a dud.

Why did you mix perlite in with the compost?
@GardeningatDouentza

Perlite is useful for retaining moisture as needed but keeping things well drained.

Hi I noticed on one of your garden tours that you have some beautiful silver birch trees which I would love to get, but am getting a lot of negitave advice about them regarding growing quite wide which I didn't relise as I often see them planted in groups of three, also they are said to shed alot, I think they look fab and would love to buy some to plant as a group of three, but would be so greatful for your advice

Hi Chris. I recommend Betula utilis var. jacquemontii. I have 12 that are in the ground over 15 years. They range in girth size from 22" to 7.5" so I would say this is a smaller variety. This year it seems every birch tree in the country (including my neighbour's) is dropping copious amounts of seed but my jacquemontii have never done this so far. The two downsides of B. utilis var. jacquemontii are that, like all birch, they root shallowly so are not suitable for a windy site. The second is that they come into leaf a little later than other trees (like all birch). Oh, and the third disadvantage, if you're finickity like me, is washing their trunks to have them nice and white. Betula utilis var. jacquemontii would lend itself well to planting in groups of three. I talk more about it in this video, which perhaps you haven't seen... kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnPdqHWceqdqiac

PS Did you know, birch trees only live about 70 years!

Such a shame that beautiful stalk broke off, it was looking lush and tropical. I planted a few this year for the first time and it didn't go well. Boston took an instant dislike to one group and he used it to wee on every day 😡 the only survivor remained very small and didn't flower. I'll see what happens next year 🤷‍♀️

@@GardeningatDouentza I'll keep trying. Boston does get fixated on certain plants (I prefer it that way rather than marking every plant in the garden). Fingers crossed for next year's Giant Himalayan Lilies🤞
