They are/were very different singers: ferrier was a pure singer, they say she was awkward in theatre, she just performed Orfeo and the rape of Lucretia as far as I know but she excelled in camera repertoire, Mahler, Brahms, Schubert and all the german lieder, and I think she's one of the best singer of Bach, Haendel, Pergolesi and all the Baroque music. Podles was unbeatable in Rossini's coloratura and baroque coloratura music, she has a much larger range and flexibility, and also a much larger repertoir. In this video you can hear she's not young, she sounded much better in her prime. But if you compare the two renditions of Mahler's kindertotenlieder Ferrier wins hands down

when I first heard Ewa about 15 years ago.. I said: Impossible, she cant be singing like this, there must be a fatal flaw or she is a Legend... spent 15 years trying to find one flaw, havent found any!

As much as I certainly respect and adore Ewa Podles (she taught me to eat raw oysters w champagne years ago at Docks, in NYC), have you listened just for beauty of sound to contralto Eula Beale? The singing is glorious, but one of the surest ways to make a staging look unintentionally comic is to use a severed head. Her acting with it is about as convincing as possible, but it still looks odd.
