Divine or Deceptive? How to Discern Spiritual Experiences

Hi Remnant Team! I just wanted to share a testimony of how this KZbin/podcast has changed my life. A few months ago I was listening to your interview with Sam Storms on the gift of tongues. I was intrigued because my spiritual upbringing was always cessationist but I never really questioned this teaching until listening to your podcast. After hearing Sam’s testimony, I decided to ask the Lord for the gift of tongues during my private devotional time. I was as they say “surprised by the Spirit.” At first I was overwhelmed and a little scared because along with the tongues I also had physical manifestations. My arms would be raised up in a worshipful stance and then bowed down as though worshiping before a throne. Needless to say I called my pastor to tell him what was going on and he was very gracious and told me that the fruit of this should be love. Several months later I can tell you that I now have a boldness to tell people about Jesus that I didn’t have before. I witnessed to an unbelieving friend for the first time without fear! So yes, I believe what I have experienced is indeed a work of the Holy Spirit. Thank you all for your ministry! I never thought I would ever in my wildest dreams experience God in this very tangible way.

I was a skeptic of gold dust, until I met a former muslim now Christian who came to Christ along with his family (in a country that is predominately muslim) bc they had a gold dust experience. not saying 100% of gold dust stories are legit, but I found myself challenged to not immediately write off charismatic testimonies and to test everything

Yeah, I'm a charismatic that used to be a cessationist. I definitely believe the gifts are for today, but I get very weary of people, especially teachers, who focus on gifts more than studying scripture verse by verse.

Content is king - I think that can also be applied to the character/content of the person. A young friend of mine received the Baptism of Holy Spirit and her response was crying and then laughter. She was glowing and just couldn't stop laughing as she said I want every person to experience this! I can't stop laughing. I think it was a pure response from a pure person.

This is so helpful. I spent the 90’s on the floor at church. There was a lot of weird stuff but also good and genuine. I grew up in cessationist churches but I started rubbing shoulders with Elim Fellowship peeps in college. I believe that God did a lot to prepare me for the coming decades of lay ministry, mostly by expanding my prayer life. So much of what I experienced was a sovereign move of the Spirit among no-name lay people, high school and college students, farmers and homemakers. Once I ended up on the floor at a noon prayer meeting of hospital staff in the Trauma Center chapel.

I think what all Christian should be doing right now is to pray for the gift of discernment, and the sight to see deception and falsehoods. The Bible warned us from Isiah to the revelations about all these, meant to deceive even the elite. At the same time we also wouldn't want to close our hearts to real manifestations of the Holy Spirit because our God is supernatural and we are in a spiritual battle.

Yes. I concur. I experienced this on a deep level with a situation I had 20 plus years ago. I'd never been in a situation like that before where depression had set in but I didn't know it. It had lingered severely due to the situation. I'd be asleep and would hear someone laughing out loud a few nights in a row. I'd awake and look around out my window, wondering who'd be awake at 2 am? It was the Spirit of the Lord waking me up. He was the one activating laughter in me. "Laughter doeth good like medicine."

As leaders, how can you always judge the fruit at the time of the “manifestation” in order to “correct” the individual at the time? Too much control for the sake of “order” might become an issue.

I think the key is if it's causing a disruption when the Word is being preached. I also think that sometimes it could be a mixture, and not all manifestations are of God. So one must really ask God for guidance on what to do in those scenarios. Sometimes just going to the person and praying with them or taking them aside to counsel is helpful. Years ago there was this one lady that would constantly have these outlandish manifestations but they were always disruptive. I received confirmation that she did it for attention and she eventually stopped coming

@@pogueatl the Holy Spirit is REAL He's the Only Person of the Godhead who is ACTUALLY On Earth in the Body of the Resurrected Christ - some people refer to it as the church or the same Kingdom of Heaven that Jesus preached when He was on Earth - what happened to the Jesus movement in the 1970s was that there were pastors who were not comfortable with the manifestations of the Holy Spirit so in exchange they gave us a Conservative Christianity in the name of balance based on a System of Theology (that's all they had) - and that's what you have on the many "christian" video channels - I have to believe that the CONTINUATION of the Revival or OUTPOURING of the 70's movement are the Prophets in the body of Christ who were the ONLY ones who foresaw Donald Trump and America who are to lead a Worldwide Great Awakening - God is also about to judge the "religious" spirit in the so-called church - The Holy Spirit is NOT a system of theology

There is a book that came out of the excesses of the Welsh Revival, _War in the Saints_. I'm finding it useful as a framework for discerning between the works of God and the work of the enemy. A difficult read, but I'd say the TL;DR is, "judge everything against Scripture and don't turn off your brain." For someone who picks it up and struggles, I'd recommend starting at chapter 11 and start reading from there.

Hi guys, I had something happen that was the strangest thing I have ever seen, I woke up one night to see the bedroom filled with a cloud and I saw a hand holding a picture that is pouring out what appeared to be mist or a cloud, it filled the room to the Holy point that I could not find my way around the room, I left the room to go to the bathroom. I did not feel anything special, when went back to the room it was still going on, I lay there and watched it all happen until I fell asleep, I woke up the next morning and it was all gone. I have believe all of it was for my wife, I just had the opportunity to see it all happen. To this day I still have no idea what it all meant.

I'll put it this way, just as the Words people speak have the power of life and death in them, so do their thoughts. So nothing is Impossible when Jesus Is Involved, even if it is "different", and there is nothing wrong with testing it, but I say He who loves Christ will act in a manner befitting that, showing the Fruits of the Holy Spirit in their Live(s). I say Lives because there is the 2 deaths according to the Bible. So one is Living in at least 2 ways. :)

We need more videos like this out there. I have always struggled with distrust of so called manifestations of the Spirit that I just can't decide if it's real or not. Many so called modern day prophets and are they legit or do they just know the Bible and speaking on things without Gods consent or is he really ordaining their speech etc. Its made my walk with God kind of stunted bc of being so leery of people. I used to be a cessationist but now i think there may actually be real prophets and stuff today. Thank you guys for your attention to this. God bless yous. My church has things like gold dust and oil appearing in peoples palms etc. Its a good church and a lot of people hungry for God. But i still have some distrust there. Maybe im just overly skeptical but Jesus did warn about false prophets more than anything else it seems.

It’s been almost 50 years ago now I was at a charismatic conference at Duquesne University. Fred Price was speaking at this meeting. And all of a sudden in the middle of his teaching, this woman got up and started to prophesy and speak in tongues tongues and interpret and prophesy. Fred Price stop and say ma’am you need to stop you know he’s not on you here if you’re being blessed by the teaching praise God but the knowing is up here God is up here ministering out to the people now he’s ministering through me you need to sit down and be quiet

From what I heard some cases of stigmata are painless and not permanent. Just because it is associated more with the cathollic tradition you shouldn't discard it all together. Could as well be a manifestation of our divine union with Christ, "I have been crucified with Christ..." I've also seen painful manifestations like feeling currents of electricity though my body, and other people feeling labor pains indicating that God is birthing something through them. Fiery manifestations, where people feel that they are burning from the inside with the fire of God. Maybe you should reconsider why you personally don't like that manifestation.

@TaylorBibleGuy I have no reason to lie. It happened 3 times. And my personal Bible. Hebrew that I was using learning Hebrew. And once when my wife and I were praying and they just appeared. I didn't expect it. On three occasions fragrances entered Into my house. Strawberries and my son's room the presence of God was so heavy that I could hardly stand who was a child uncontrollably. On two occasions the smell of cloves when praying in worshiping being in my home. I can't explain it. I just know that the Presence was heavy.

In Germany I am a member of a charismatic Ministry and in the beginnings of that ministry gold dust would appear during Worship. And I was on board of DAWN Switzerland and we met pastors who had experienced that gold things. When I taught the first time public about the prophetic gifts, the presence of God manifested so strongly that I was insecure, what to do. So I asked the audience if they feel also the Holy Spirit that strong they confirmed my observations so O told them, that I did not know, what to do, to continue with my teaching or doing something else.😳 Stigmata’s are satanic signs. Your guys are not familiar with Roman Catholic theology I quess, I grew up Roman Catholic and those weird signs are quite coming during Middle Ages. Stigmata are fake muscles of occultism power, to draw people in Roman Catholicism or closer into Mary Worship.

I’m going to say this over and over again what kind of fruit is produced from it throughout history we’ve had weird manifestations . There are also so-called manifestations of Mary, she has supposedly appeared numerous times throughout history given messages to people. You have her appearing to a monk who gave him the rosary. When you look at these you see people flocking to the sites that are not shrines. People are making pilgrimages to them. Some are praying to the statues of Mary that are there. The rosary is a focus on the passion of Christ. They have five mysteries about the events of Christ life and his sacrifice on the cross and raising from the dead. But what do we see they’re praying I canned prayer taken out of the Bible. The Hail Mary 10 times they say this. And then they pray the our father once and the glory be. The Bible doesn’t teach us to pray to Saints for Mary but to the father in Jesus name. Then you have other really weird Catholic beliefs. They have saints on display who have never decayed. They have a bleeding host. And again people flock to these instead of Jesus. Again look at the fruit are they drawing closer to Jesus or they drawing closer to a religious system? Again it’s about the fruit. my spirit is thrilled when I hear people being healed and touched by the Lord having their prayers answered. I see in some conferences mimicking charismatic experiences yes I do. My rule in life has always been using the gift of discerning of spirits. Ask the Holy Spirit is this of God or not. Because you can’t say to a Catholic or you can’t pray that prayer to Mary. It’s in the Bible .

How about Michael Heisler and his obsession with the book of Enoch. Can you add him on twice and you consider him a brother in the Lord. You don’t seem to have a problem with his teaching. Why on earth would GOD bark or roar to a human being. Ask yourself. He created us in HIS IMAGE, so HE WILL COMMUNICATE TO US IN OUR OWN language or as HE DID with me, sometimes lay it in ENGLISH on my mind while I am Afrikaans.

So stay focus on the Word of God who is Jesus Christ otherwise like Peter he started walking on the water looking at Jesus but suddenly he drowned because of the super amazement of walking on the water with the earthly fallen body . Understanding and remembering what Jesus has done for our sins truly keep us humble instead of unnecessary super natural experience until we reach the eternal life.

It’s been almost 50 years ago now I was at a charismatic conference at Duquesne University. Fred Price was speaking at this meeting. And all of a sudden in the middle of his teaching, this woman got up and started to prophesy and speak in tongues tongues and interpret and prophesy. Fred Price stop and say ma’am you need to stop you know he’s not on you here if you’re being blessed by the teaching praise God but the knowing is up here God is up here ministering out to the people now he’s ministering through me you need to sit down and be quiet

Maybe this will help - the Rabbi Saul wrote to Gentiles who had been idle worshipers for thousands of years and told them that when they Received and Believed the Good News of Christ Jesus crucifixion for them they did so by what Paul called the MANIFEST Power(DYNAMITE) of God - ever asked yourself what the Manifest Power was ?? - Well later in the same letter Paul said that if Jesus is not risen from the dead then our faith is in vain and that we are still dead in our sins and that his preaching was for nothing - here's another question - what was Paul preaching - well in 1st Corinthians chapter 2 Paul said it was The CROSS - He went on to say that the Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead and LIVED IN those that had Received the Good News message also knew the mind of God which was to know the things that God gives FREELY - all believers have that - they just don't trust that - another essential problem is the Holy Spirit is not a system of theology
