Pro tip - Resist the urge to look at yourself while making a video. Look at the camera lense instead. Sounds trivial but it has a huge impact on how the viewer perceives both you and what you have to say. Extremely helpful video. Thank you for breaking the important stuff down into an easily digestible form.

How common is glass in today's prescription lense market? I know it's really heavy compared to the alternatives but in at the end of my rope with peeling AR coating so I'm thinking of trying to get non coated glass lenses.

@mattmcintyre7083 peeling AR at the upper end is extremely rare. I find it’s VERY common on low to mid range options however. As for glass in rx, it’s almost non existent today. We can still get it over here, but uncoated only.

Hello, I am writing from Turkey. I have been using glasses for about 2 years. I bought a new pair of glasses this year. I bought the kodak glass. I bought polycarbonate glass. But within a week, even though I dropped it on the floor and only wiped it with a glasses cloth, it started to get scratched and stained. Is there a lens you can recommend for this? Should I use mineral or polycarbonate?

Hi, I have a prescription of SPH/CYL -2.25/-4.50 and was wondering which lens are best for me? I looked up Hi-vex mr8plus 1.6 but have very little results coming up online. Is it possible they are no longer made? I keep finding the old High Index MR8 when searching at it seems it only supports up to -4 Cylinder. I've asked some local opticians and some don't seem to know what I'm talking about or want me to jump to 1.67. Was hoping you would give me a recommendation.

Hivex is a relatively new monomer for making lenses and isn’t widely known within the industry, unfortunately. It can absolutely be pushed higher than 4D cylinder as well. I will add even on the production end many labs are using the newer MR95 1.6 which is a hivex variation for blanks of 1.6 index without knowing it passing the information along. Very few care about actual material (shocker, since realistically the substrate makes more difference than most design choices today) and it’s just not a marketing thing. So the good news there is, you could get/have it without knowing when ordering a 1.6 index material. If it says anything about blue blocking being made into the material and is a refractive index of 1.56/1.601 congrats, it’s hivex.

For driving, it sounds like glass would be better than CR39. For example, reading street signs at night. I hate how at night I need to creep up on some of the small signs to see if it's my turn. I would love to hear more about glasses for driving in particular. Thanks so much for this video. Glasses are so expensive, that some of us love all the details that you share. Some of the things you say make a difference, like saying glass is better at distance than CR39.

Thanks. Glad you enjoy the content and I really appreciate the feedback. 🥂 For night time it’s a bit more complex as generally our main goal is to gather as much light as possible into the eye, and actually modern surfacing technology and anti reflective technology combined with newer lens materials like hivex and or cr39 can provide overall better results due to how much light they’re able to pass vs even ar coated glass. Hivex in particular has the added benefit of attenuating higher energy light (lower nm) for better comfort and reducing the dazzling affect of brighter led lights in particular. 🙃. Hope that helps some!

The reasons I am interested in glass lenses are for the optical clarity and scratch resistance. However, if antireflective coating is applied, won't the color be slightly shifted? I use clear Oakley lenses with antireflective coating and there is a slight pink tint to them. Without antireflective coating, will reflections be noticeable with glass lenses?
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 11 ай бұрын
Sorry for the delay. Missed this one for a bit somehow. At any rate, without AR glass inherently transmits more light than regular plastic lenses but reflections do still persist. The discoloration you experienced with Oakley lenses were due to the material, not the coating. Anti reflective coatings do nothing more than increase light transmission and reduce internal reflections, they don’t control spectrum in a way that would create a chromatic shift in most cases 😎

The only thing that sways me in either direction in that type of setting is the LED lighting, in polycarbonate that would bug me due to the peripheral chromatic dispersion. You have hundreds of point sources of light with red and blue bands on either side, some it doesn’t bother in the slightest and is totally negligible. I very closely relate this to the rainbow affect of mid range and even some high end DLP projectors. Once you see it, and if it bothers you, you can’t unsee it and there is no going back 😂

For polarised lenses is glass better than polycarbonate in terms of polarization strength??
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 Жыл бұрын
No. For the polar laminate it makes no difference, and that laminate is actually the limiting optical factor in glass reducing performance slightly. 🥂. Glass is still the “better” performer of the two, but the actual “amount” of polarization efficacy will be the same if made to the same specs. I.e. a Maui polar laminate will be the same level of polarization regardless of optical material it’s applied to.

Don't higher index lenses have less barrel distortion than lower index lenses even though the abbe value is worse? Just as your eyes appear larger from the outside with high thickness lenses, don't objects appear smaller?
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely not. Machine calibration and lens design play a much larger role, and actually higher index unnecessarily can create more distortion because any other material at the same thickness bends light less 😉 As for how objects appear that comes down to lens curvature and power and isn’t as simple as that, minus or plus lenses can both be thick and have a vastly different effect on how the eyes appear.

In the case of sunglasses; will uv coating applied to CR39 degrade over time?
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 Жыл бұрын
This is a theory I’ve read quite a bit about actually, but haven’t seen any studies about proper dyed filters into the cr39 medium. However, as technology has changed and the light blocking properties are actually imbibed directly to the material today, this isn’t as true as it once was. On the ones that it does fade on, you’re looking at still a 2-5 year life span. Glass will see the same fade of uv properties except on the case of true colored and not coated glass. Polyamides and polycarbonates it is again inherent to the material and will never fade away.

@ThatGlassesGuy03 hummm..so glass lenses could also loose protection? I wear sunglasses every day and have CR-39, polycarbonate and glass lenses. All from quality brands, but I'm always looking to be protected and the idea that my sunglasses have an expiration date makes me uncomfortable.

There are machines to test how much uv spectrum passes through the lenses. No idea what they cost today but could be very worthwhile for an extensive collection to determine when best to replace lenses for maximum uv efficacy. @@sprocketdog6303 not necessarily. Typically that kind of add power comes with other medical issues as well and a progressive near zone at that power just isn’t gonna cut it in those cases. :) Regardless. It’s not that clear cut, there are other variables for which material will be the best best, including frame choice. Higher cylinder power 1.6 does some things better than CR that enhance he overall wear experience. The add power only tells me the above needs to be done, with no bearing on material, except that, if the full add is done in a pal, for the same reasons as high cyl (because a pal is essentially controlled cylinder power) 1.6 would be slightly more beneficial. It makes me sad that glass is going the way of the dodo bird because glass is the best. I was legally blind before cataract surgery last summer. I have reglazed (or re-plasticed) three pairs and bought one new pair. Two I had made with trivex which seem pretty good and one custom tinted made of whatever they chose. All those are single vision. My work glasses are glass Photogrey extra bifocals w/35mm add section. (After ordering I found out Corning makes a darker version cslled "thin and dark", which I would have preferred. Damn.) I really need bifocals because progressives simply suck. But I refuse to wear plastic bifocals because of the dirt and oil trapping ridge on the lens. I could care less about a visable line. As a professional photographer I am hyper critical about optics. And as a klutz I like lenses that don't scratch. Glass is best. Plastic is self destructive and I consider them throw away fragile toys. Glass will last decades, longer than me.
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 2 жыл бұрын
Thin and dark is an incredible lens, leans a bit too far magenta when fully darkened for my tastes (and Ild wager yours based on some of our conversations). Ild be amazed if anyone is still running it in segmented bifocals today 🫠. But as it’s fused in anyways it’s just a matter of finding the right lab with the right parts. 🥸. Trivex is ok, certainly more chemical resistant than other plastics but not quite a glass fighter. Cr39 comes close in optics but hivex provides the closest overall experience with the most customization available. But of course neither of those will last decades like glass under normal wear. Though I’ve never really torture tested an uncontested hivex lens to see how it really stacks up. Might be a worthwhile experiment as it tends to have the closest overall durability and structure to glass otherwise 😎 As for the segmented line issue, digital bifocals solve most of that being a surfaced in add bubble on the backside and those can be run as large as 40mm diameter segments!

Too wordy and dorky. It left us more confused. We had to go elsewhere to get the information we needed.

We who? This is pretty darn dumbed down with almost no technical jargon and direct examples. The vast majority of the reviews also disagree, sorry it didn’t help you in your case, but I’m always here to actually help and break things down too. 🥂

It’s an oldie but a goodie. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4GoaJVuaaajnMk Today it’s far tougher to get many of the things I was talking about here even just over 2 years ago. Crazy world.

Many places do it all the time. 🤷‍♂️ personally I don’t work with polycarbonate unless absolutely necessary

I have a Mr Leight nylon lens sunglasses and have a Moncler polycarbonate lens sunglasses, and the Moncler is much superior than the Mr.leight. Full stop

Lens tuning matters as well for sure, but generally as an optical material nylon is superior to polycarbonate. Now if they’ve been overheated somewhere along the way the nylon lenses will be miserable, and without necessarily showing any signs that it’s happened like the crazing polycarbonate displays. Fun stuff. But there are some really impressive polycarbonate sun filters out there today 😁

@@ThatGlassesGuy03 much respect for you sir, you seem ofc have much knowledge in opticals, for me I tried both, I have like 5 different sunglasses, Gucci nylon, mr leight nylon, moncler polycarbonate, Dita polycarbonate, culter and gross polycarbonate. I like the polycarbonate lenses better. And I just ordered a new pair mineral glass this time from serengeti.

You’re the anomaly. I like it 😂. I’m certain you’ll find the Serengeti glass far superior in every way, but I’m definitely curious to hear your thoughts just from the above! 😁 would love more details on the lens colors of each as well 🙂

@@ThatGlassesGuy03 Gucci Black, Mr.leight blue, Dita and culter and gross brown creamy, moncler pink. In between yes I live abroad in an island btw Malaysia and Thailand and the nylon lens doesn't fit in here so hot and humidity in here, I ordered a pair mineral glass from Persol month ago but I didn't like it, and I returned it.

Definitely interested. Sounds like the colors may be at play here with the nylon lenses being darker, but with the environment that’s a factor too. Guessing the persons were grey or green as well? Definitely ping me Back once you’ve tried the Serengeti glass, as they’re generally that perfect buttery rose brown shade

You shouldn't sway back and forth so much. It makes a person nauseated trying to watch. It's why you never see presenters moving during filming.
