Although DRG doesn't have much lore like you said it's foundations are there and with the new seasonal model it looks like the devs might be building up a story into the future. I have a theory for Karl though which I believe is pretty solid: Karl was a dwarf miner who descended into Hoxxes sometime before the current Dwarves. He and his crew decided to go for a particularly difficult mission akin to Haz 5 and during that mission the entire crew ended up running out of ammo (referenced by the achievement "Karl would be proud". As the droppod was returning Karl made the decision to fight the remaining Glyphids (it's highly likely a dreadnought was involved) with nothing but his pickaxe and allow his fellow crewmates to leave without him. After this event Karl became a legend amongst DRG and eventually the term "No Dwarf Left Behind" was coined in his honour. Some other bits to note: -Slayer stout makes strong reference to Karl using it -The achievement earned by completing a Haz-5 without ammo or a Dwarf going down is called "Karl would be proud" -One of the lines said when power attacking is "For Karl!" -When killing a dreadnought one of the lines said is "Karl would be proud" -It's possible the massive chunk missing from the planet could've been the result of Karl doing a power attack after drinking lots and lots of slayer stout. I would like to believe this but there isn't much evidence supporting this other than the description of Slayer Stout.
@thorveim11742 жыл бұрын
Its implied the slayer stout was even involved in karl's demise since "karl's legend" is all about his death. And considering he was a heavy drinker ("That dreadnought ate bullets like Karl drank beers"), maybe he went down there just a little too drunk and that caused the mission to go HORRIBLY wrong... and maybe he is the reason for the "leave no dwarf behind" policy, maybe he was left behind by his teammates...

@caligirl2288 Жыл бұрын
Here is some of my theories, though one was inspired by another I read. 1. The most recent war the Dwarves as race fought in was with Elves. I know all the "Pointy eared leaf lovers" references and insults could tie into the usual Elf vs Dwarf in popular media, but I think its more. Many times during war, soldiers and civilians alike come up with "colorful" nicknames to use in describing their enemies. Then they get used to describe those they consider week, cowardly, or morally wrong. Doesn't that sound familiar. 2. Based on theory I heard. The Dwarves are a subspecies that evolved from humans when they left Earth. That explains all the pop culture references used by Dwarves, and the cosmetics in game. The original theory was that the DRG game took place in the Shadowrun universe. A TTRPG set on a future cyberpunk Earth where after magic returns, various humans go through a metamorphosis into various fantasy races like Elves, Trolls, Orcs, and of course...Dwarves. Seeing as we've only heard of Elves, there hasn't been any (noticeable) magic, and the 2 games are owned by different companies...I doubt it. 3. The rival corporation might not be a mining company at all. We never see any large scale mining operations. We instead see them build large amounts permanent infrastructure. Communication arrays, defense turrets, data terminals, even data vaults. Most robots we've seen are solely dedicated to protecting their interests. The prospector is the only one we've seen that has any minerals on them...but we've never seen actually mine. And those Data terminals? Made for the Prospectors to deposit DATA. Not minerals. Data. I think the rivals aren't interested in Hoxxes for the treasure trove of precious minerals, but something else. Perhaps the error cubes?

I have a theory regarding Karl. I think he disappeared or died while killing the glyphid Queen. It’s pretty clear from many voice lines that Karl was extremely accomplished but is no longer present. Scout will mutter to himself when killing bugs “I’ll beat your record this time, just watch me.” This is likely a reference to Karl’s incredible kill count. “Just watch me.” might be implying a disembodied viewer to scouts statement, such as a spirit of the dead looking down and watching scouts deeds. When the dwarves are killing masses of bugs they’ll yell “For Karl!” as if claiming revenge for him, likely because he’s dead. “Die like your mother did!” suggests there was a Queen bug that was killed in the past. Because this line references a singular and seemingly all encompassing mother, the Queen was probably the only one of its kind at the time. There’s no lines suggesting Karl was the one who killed the Queen, but judging by how revered and powerful he was, her death was likely his doing.

DRG has such a perfect setup for an interesting story. a geological and biological anomaly of a world that is also a gold mine, being fought over by minimum-wage dwarven mining workers and an enigmatic mechanical workforce from beyond even the farthest stars, all while unknown horrors and a long-lost hero rumble in the deep against a backdrop of beautiful caves and (possibly depending on your view on Error Cubes and Error Helixes) ancient ruins? it's amazing! I think there having been a war of some kind makes sense, but personally I think it wasn't just a war against Elves or humans or some other force. I think it was Dragons, or even just a "Dragon." it'd be a neat detail if the dwarves had been forced from their homeworld or had to fight to keep it safe against a Smaug-esque entity. but in general the game is both fun and has endless amounts of meat on it's bones for me to pick at to make wild speculative theories about Hoxxes geology, ecology and the general history of the universe that Ghost Ship has made here.

I've always wondered why the Glyphids have so many battle ready and powerful species when there doesn't seem to be a need. What would you need an oppressor for, hunting? Why would you need an oppressor for the relatively easy task of hunting. Speaking of what do the Glyphids eat? It doesn't seem like there's enough prey to go around. So I have this theory. The idea is that the Glyphids are constantly having turf wars over hunting grounds. The reason they need to fight over the land is to have enough to feed their swarms and not completely eradicate the wildlife in the area. (another part of this explanation is that swarms are relatively few and far in-between.) In order to fight these turf wars the Glyphids needed dedicated fighting members of their swarms such as Preytorians, oppressors etc, while things like regular grunts hunt food while as well being good as common grunts of a swarm in battle. They also teamed up with other species like the Macterrors. Here's another question. why do the Glyphids attack dwarves? I have two reasons. One unlike on earth were when reacting to something new, a wild animal will approach in curiosity. On Hauxies instead of curiosity its violence Two I have a theory that the way a swarm detects an enemy swarm is by feeling the vibrations of them tunnelling (based off the way you trigger a swarmer nest by causing a vibration with your pickaxe). And you can imagine how many vibrations a drop pod will cause. This also explains the massive smarm at the end of a mission. Also to explain why the swarms keep coming afterwards, is because when on a war path a swarm leaves behind a pheromone trail to signify where the battle is, and if a battle goes sour a swarmer or something can go and get an idle swarm as reinforcements, and lead them to the trail. (Glyphid swarms are usually part of a larger clan.)

This comment is a little off topic, but related to DRG lore and I've been waiting to share my idea for a while. I think the line "Die, like your mother did!" has been overlooked, and is possibly a clue to what might have happened to Karl. I've watched quite a few DRG lore analysis videos and no one has mentioned it. My personal belief is that there was some sort of glyphid queen (like with ants or bees) that Karl possibly killed, and maybe he had to sacrifice himself to deal the final blow (this would explain why he is so famous and revered among the dwarves). Idk, maybe I'm over analyzing it, not hearing the line correctly, or maybe it's triggered when you kill a nanocyte after killing the breeder, but I still like my theory.

At least they are prominent DRG employees and not just on Hoxxes, seeing as drg "Long relied on dwarves". And its not so surprising considering why hoxxes is THE most dangerous known world, so nasty no company wanted to set foot there despite it being extremely rich in minerals until deep rock (and eventually the rivals though their efforts are entirely automated). Overall Deep Rock seems they thrive thanks to their willingness to go mine on worlds deemed too dangerous by other mining companies, and dwarves seem like they fit that kind of job JUST FINE.
@chene-aurelgaudreau10722 жыл бұрын
3 things: 1. When it comes to dwarven society, there is no mention anywhere of an empire (as far as I know), and the dwarfs in game never show any signs of national identity/ patriotism. This implies to me that there isn’t much of a dwarven society outside of corporations like Deep Rock, or that the dwarfs just don’t really care about their society. This means that if the dwarfs do have military experience, it would likely be in the form of mercenary work, motivated mainly by money. 2. Whilst it is true that the dwarfs definitely do enjoy fighting and killing bugs, I don’t get the impression that that was their motivation for joining Deep Rock. Because whenever the dwarfs talk about work, they talk about it the same way other workers do. They complain about pay, contemplate retirement, talk about possible future careers (namely starting their own mine), complain about poor work conditions,...etc. They are less warriors fighting for the sake of it, and more workers fighting because that’s what they’re paid for. Same goes for their hatred of management: They don’t hate management because of anything to do with honor. They hate management because management cuts their pay and treats them as expendable. A fairly normal worker/employer relationship. 3. Great vid :)

I think that the Empires collapsed at some point in the past, which is why they aren't referenced as much. 2. I agree that fighting isn't their main motivation, I think that they may have sought out this job because fighting is what they are good at. It may be one of the only places left where they can put their skills to use. 3. Thanks! I might try and make another lore video, but I'm not sure what I should focus on next! A lot of my theories are a lot smaller than this, so I'm not sure if I could make a full video about them.

@calebnewell5032 Жыл бұрын
@@lanej5828 The subtle approach would be to put Easter eggs in the maps, that the community may not entirely understand, or even notice, at least not immediately. There needs to be a lot of room for speculation and discovery, but also a trail of breadcrumbs, that will lead us to make inferences about what these odd finds mean. Then, over time, we get more and more occurrences and hints, throughout the seasons, as this background story develops. It’s something that tells us about the unknown past of DRG, yet also maybe points to some developing issue. We see this strategy all the time in games like Fortnite and Sea of Thieves. Also, putting tidbits in gear descriptions, is another good method. The DRG headquarters is also a shrine of potential. The suspiciously stern command we get from Mission Control, when we go to the very top of the launch bay makes me feel like there could be some secrets being kept from the miners. There’s a lot of ways to skin this cat, but the more subtle and mysterious, the more satisfying it would ultimately be for players to find out, especially as they start getting up to level 100+ and they start making discoveries about the game that connect to other details they’ve maybe been skimming over, for the majority of their initial grind.

Interesting! I wonder why earth would specifically be called the "old world". Did dwarves live on earth? or perhaps there's another reason
@inquisitorbenediktanders31422 жыл бұрын
@@shadowhaxor99 my personal theory is that earth in the past was basically like tolkien and then evolved over time, industrialized, made it to space and now we are here. And remember, this is in a space setting. The dwarves could have done their service in many ways, like for example anti piracy duty.

I have a theory that it went like this: the Dwarves all have a military history, possibly met as they were formed in a squad, with Karl being their Leader. They grow close as a group, vowing to never leave anyone behind. After a while (for whatever reason) they decide to quit and become mercenaries, running contracts around the outer Rim. Now one day DRG offers them a few contracts on Hoxxes, and they accept. Contract after contract, they started feeling like home in the Rig, downing beers together, being led by their legendary leader Karl, until tragedy struck: One mission, Karl, (possibly drunk) got too cocky with his pickaxe (guessing from the description of the slayer stout) and got downed too far from the team, so they were forced to leave him behind. Because of this, they decide to become full employees of DRG, so they can keep going on missions to avenge Karl's death by killing as many of those damn bugs as they can, and as a sign of respect, Mamagement builds a statue of Karl, and adapt the dwarven code into their own. Leave no Dwarf behind. (This would also explain why you start at lvl1 when you begin, as there the dwarves are just fully employed)

The "Reclamators" are from the next game in the DRG universe: "DRG: Rogue Core"
@TacticalGlizzy Жыл бұрын
I think maybe the Dwarves are indentured servants to DRG, who are most likely run by Elves. The Dwarves don't seem to have lines or dialogue suggesting that their work is voluntary, in fact, having lines like "When I'm done with DRG, I'm starting my own mining company..." along with the general disdain for management paints the opposite picture. Couple that with management seemingly aloof about the Dwarves safety and I say we have some Dwarves reluctantly doing work for Elves...
@Jawmax Жыл бұрын
The Corporate Marine helmet is the same that is used for Lost Helmets that lead to the Lost Packs. I think it is the standard for DRG. Yes, your Dwarf can be a veteran and your idea that they reclaimed a homeworld or colony sounds cool. I like to think in the DRG universe the fantasy creatures we know are really more advanced races the originated on and left Earth. The Dwarf look down on humans because we are still primitive compared to them. Different parts of DRG could be other races. R&D could be Gnomes, or Managment might ran by Goblins or Elves. Management did insist that Leaf Lovers be severed at the Abyss Bar.

I'd like to think that the dwarves left their old fantasy planet after they figured out space engineering and rocket science so that they could seek outer space.

Tbh if you think about it, deeprock is kinda fresh, even after being in development for years its still kinda recent as I consider season one as the start of their world building, and by world building I mean an attempt at actual storytelling. Theres alot of things they can do with the story. The baseline is you're a dwarf working for a Mining company on a isolated planet in the middle of nowhere. And when season 1 started they began introducing other story elements with the rival incursion. Theres alot if ways to build a story up but to be honest I think GSG will leave the story up to the players and how the players interpret story elements.

For the reclimator you cross out the second line, but in my opinion that’s more important. Dwarves are mineral focused so if a Dwarf can get a good product out of “unusable” soil wouldn’t that be like turning water into wine?

I like the theory that this is a warhammer 40k game. Gylphids = Tyranids and deep rock galactic is one of the leagues of votann, maybe that's why we never see management's in person! Because they are an A.I! Also it connects to your theory in many ways.

glyphids as nids doesnt fit. Nids are nomadic and just eat worlds before moving on, while glyphids are natives of Hoxxes and a part of its ecosystem. Though maybe they could be an old strain of stranded nids kinda like the catachan devils.

i think you might be onto something with the reclaimers. Apparently you're gonna play as "Elite dwarven Reclaimers" in Rogue Core. Perhaps it's some sort of elite military unit/branch. Thinking about it, in deep rock there's lots of mentions about specific military units like the space marines or the spaceforce(?) and presumably the scale brigade too.

I would say, that corporative ****** is true, just because of that phrase. It's even clearly says your lives are less important that mined out resources. And yet they disposing Doretta after each mission (probably underdeveloped feature) and wasting fuel by moving the droppod each time you starting the mission.

Less of a direct clue, but I do find it fitting of this theory that there happens to be three different hair colour cosmetics which are considered "elderly." Speaks to the idea of a dying race of long-lived warriors. (Also, the Ancient hair colour's description makes reference to "those that lived," which lends more credence to the idea of a great war which might have wiped out a significant chunk of the dwarf population!)
@thorveim11742 жыл бұрын
that or its just a reference of how the kind of mining jobs Deep Rock takes means very few miners reach old age, most either get promoted before, or more likely reach an early grave. After all even out of Hoxxes Deep Rock is reputed to take on mining operations so risky other mining companies refuse to even consider them. hoxxes is just their nastiest operation to date, but previous ones werent rosey either. Be it because of other mining companies (like the rivals on hoxxes), or a hostile environment. After all, iff things like the Lithophage arent native to Hoxxes, what other kinds of horrors are still out there that Deep Rock had to deal with on other planets?

Sorry if the comment drags on, I love lore but I'm terrible at communicating. Not lore-relevant part: I think the way they hint at the lore and open it up to interpretation sort of encourages us as players to do some theorycrafting and communicate our ideas to one another. In a way, I think that also nudges us towards having a positive attitude towards each other and keeping the playerbase wholesome. Also they can focus on keeping up the gameplay quality and they can look at our theories and maybe it inspires them to implement it, whether in a direct or indirect way. Lore-relevant part: I think fourth relic might be another faction (not like DRG or Rival, just similar to Scale Brigade) that maybe is a religious sect or something similar of old-world dwarves. I also have some interest in the precursors of DRG (that is, the creators of the error cubes and error helices), maybe for a later season something will happen with the precursor objects and they will activate to try and protect hoxxes from the new rockpox threat? I imagine an infection that attacks the planet directly (espcially with that being its objective) is doing much more harm than the dwarves are just trying to harvest resources and mostly only attacking the native species
@shadowhaxor992 жыл бұрын
No worries! This is a great comment! While I agree it's nice to leave room for interpretation, I personally think it's a little bit too open right now... Not a lot to start building with. As you can tell, I do still like what we have now! Very cool theory about Scale brigade! I've often wondered if dragons are real in the DRG universe or the scale brigade just uses them as symbols. I also hope to see more from the precursors! We know so little about them, it would be very cool to finally get more! maybe the error cubes could finally get a use! I'm tired of them sitting in my inventory doing nothing lol

the bowler hat says something in the description in the lines of "this is a perfect fit for a criminal but not far off to the people drg hires lately" that always makes me think that the dwarves that work in drg are or where criminals that where given a second chance, that could explain why if they die or not in the caves is not drg's problem and can be easily replaced as no one will miss them, there's also posters in the space rig that resemble ussr propaganda so they probably came from dwarven space gulags
@flytrapYTP2 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea, though i think it's mainly supposed to be a joke about how low DRG's standards are because the workers are so expendable
@thorveim11742 жыл бұрын
yeah DRG is a company that specializes in dangerous digs overall, and while dwarves are grouchy about their work, they also dont seem like they are forced to stay there but rather choose to out of a sense of tradition ("Sometimes i wonder if mining is all there is to life. Then i punch myself in the nose"). Also, I doubt prisoners would get promotions/barely care about being promoted. Overall i get more the feeling that dwarves are the ONLY ones willing to get down there to mine, and thats why they are excused when they mess around in the space rig because there is no replacing them by other employees. As for DRG.. yeah they are just cheap, greedy bastards. The reason charge suckers manage to hack BET-C is precisely because corners were cut in BET-C's programming, and the dwarves probably keep complaining that DRG should invest in better equipment for a reason. they are just a very cheap company that probably considers a haul of minerals more important to save than their employees.

Crazy idea but what if Carl is the founder of the rivaling company. After being left on hoxxes he sees that the dwarf codex is a nothing but a lie and he starts to hate the dwarves who left him there. He somehow escapes from hoxxes and starts the rivaling company. evidence might be that the dwarves have voicelines of starting their own company and that idea might have stuck with carl. All the opperations also just seem to be about being hostile to nothing but dwarves. no mining or anything like that. wich might suggest that the sole reason for the companies existance is vengance.

Personally I see DRG as some sort of paramilitary/mining org. Essentially all the military stuff you see is from DRG, and it's because DRG has been sending dwarves to dangerous alien worlds to fight and mine for a long time now. You chose to ignore the dirt part of reclaimater, but that's the thing these are dwarves, the guy whose job is to chew through the dirt (as that is 100% designed with the driller in mind) is gonna be a major one. As for the dwarven homeworld I assume its earth (Or should I say middle-earth) and they've just gone to space cause there's more to mine out there not that earth is uninhabitable or taken over. Essentially the dwarves share a homeplanet with humans and elves (as they do mention them both), but these dwarves are out here on Hoxxes because that's where the big mining industry is nowadays. To sumarise: the dwarves are working for DRG who is the biggest baddest dwarven mining company, and its a common way of life that dwarves go fighting alien planets across the galaxy to mine them for resources.

the tunnel vision I think is your mistake War is corporate in their world, and the miners are a branch of the military, the contracts for these rocks they fly into are won be different competing factions for resources. they arent retired vets in a new line of work, this is vets in active war. an active war against the bugs and rival companies is ongoing on hoxxes. They are currently in active service to a company, we see that as alien because we are developed in most first world countries to have corporate seperated from government but that doesnt mean they have the same structure. I believe they are trained elsewhere for this specific military job and the company they choose wins contracts for military invasion of the rock. the "old world" is the one the were orignally from and it probaly still exists as this is a very common trope in sci fi novels. the whole thing follows old 70s/80s sci fi literature for distopian futures with corporate in control of governing the military and politics. you might call it Dwarvenpunk. this form also stands true when you consider how 80s sci fi inspired the music and level design is. my theory is that the corporate is the governing body and the military is companies like coca cola vs pepsi fighting for material. after all we are alway fighting for land and resources on our own planet in wars.
