Thank you so much for this video. I know it was a long time ago. but I just started doing gardening and I am learning a lot from you. You mentioned this method can be done on Tulips bulbs, does it matter the type of tulip? Please let me know, because I am trying to find a way to propagate my Tulips they are so expensive here in Canada.

Thanks very good video 😍. I want to know the care after planting. 1. Are they covered with plastic so as not to water frequently (greenhouse effect)? 2. Are they left in full sun? Shadow? or half shade? Thanks in advance 😊.
@hollyk723 жыл бұрын
I left mine in the shade. I have a greenhouse and that is where they stayed until they sprouted. However, if it had been summer I would not have put them in my greenhouse because a Texas summer is way to hot. So, just a shady spot where I kept them watered.

I was just thinking about this the other day. I have done it with the amaryllis and it works great. But was not sure with the other bulbs. This makes me smile. Do you have an update on these bulbs?

I like that your instructions are very precise.....not long winded -thank you! I appreciate that but I have a question regarding amaryllis bulbs - I received one through the mail and it's the dead of winter. The didn't ship it properly. I've already called the company and they issued me a refund and they told me to trash the bulb. I'm not doing that - so can I just cut off all of the bulb part just keep the basal plate itself and plant that potting soil or perlite?
@hollyk722 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can, I would probably just quarter it and leave a portion of the bulf meat. If there is any hope at all- I would plant it and see if it sprouts. Thank you for your compliment!

Can you do this with corms? I have a bunch of Giant Crocuses I would love to divide... also, if it takes a year for them before they will bloom, will you end up getting the same amount anyway if you let them multiply on their own?
@hollyk724 жыл бұрын
Because you can divide on bulb into as many as 4-6 pieces depending on the size of the root base, you can get a lot more bulbs this way than waiting on them to naturally divide. I would have to google corms, I am not sure.
@j.b.434011 ай бұрын
I did this by accident, when I destroyed a crinum bulb. It was shocking to watch the pieces grow.

When I learned about this, I no longer felt guilty for all the bulbs I sliced when I was moving or dividing a clump of bulbs. Now I know they just grew more! Thanks for viewing!

Hi. Its so easy tip. Thanks. I live in the very south of Sweden. We have mild winters. When do you recommend to do this? Should i keep them indoors at first or is it ok to put in soil right away? Br Fredrik
@hollyk724 жыл бұрын
Hi! I am not really familiar with weather patterns in Sweden. However, if you are past the potential for freezing, I think putting them directly into the soil is fine. I did mine in the fall, so I kept them in the greenhouse until the next spring.
@Krookarn4 жыл бұрын
Holly Ross Well they are in full bloom now. I Will try after they bloom and try your method and plant them in my greenhouse. Interesting video. Keep it up 👍🏻
@hollyk724 жыл бұрын
@@Krookarn Definitely wait! The bulbs will need all the energy they store up through the growing season. The green leaves should completely die back to the ground before you dig them up. If you are on Facebook, you can find my farm page at Hollyberry Herb Farm. I would love to connect with you.

Can you do this technique with the giant lilly bulbs? They are a bit on the expensive side so it would be fantastic if this works.
@hollyk722 жыл бұрын
From what I have read and tried, this technique should work with any bulb. Just remember to make certain that each section of the bulb has a portion of the root.

Do we do this for spring or late fall? Can you direct sow on the ground?
@hollyk724 жыл бұрын
The time of year that you would do this depends on the bulb and its bloom/growth time. Like the daffodil I am working with should be done late summer to late winter. By late summer the bulb has bloomed and the green foliage has died back meaning that the bulb has stored up all the energy it needs to grow for another season. So, I recommend doing this when the bulb has finished its growth cycle for the year and gone dormant. Yes, you can plant straight into the ground.
@messeduphina5663 жыл бұрын
Is it a good idea to apply some fungicide or air dry them to avoid rotting?
@hollyk723 жыл бұрын
If the bulbs have been pulled from the ground, it is good to give them a bit of time to dry out. No more than three days. I have not had a problem with fungicide but different areas might.
@jbpsap8982 жыл бұрын
What time a year should I try this? Thanks.
@hollyk722 жыл бұрын
When the foliage is turning brown and done for the year. OR, whenever you purchase the bulbs before they sprout. The time of year will depend on the type of bulb and the time of year it blooms.
@michaelvanderheyden53052 жыл бұрын
Let's say for instance an amaryllis bulb has already flowered and the flowers died off. Could I cut off the foliage then go right into this method or does it only work for bulbs that have not sprouted? And if so, is there a way to prepare my bulb so that it goes dormant and is appropriate for this type of propagation? Thanks!! Great info :)
@hollyk722 жыл бұрын
I would let the foliage remain until it naturally turns brown. This is because the foliage is what gives the bulb the energy to sprout again. Once the foliage is done, then I would cut it off and splice the bulb.
@playinglifeoneasy92266 ай бұрын
I’ve seen this done, but I thought I remembered them dipping in sulfur powder or I don’t know some kind of powder or lemon, dry cures that it doesn’t get infected but I don’t know but is it OK just to put the bulbs in the dirt like that when they’re cut
@hollyk724 ай бұрын
Sulphur would kill any fungus. If I had a really expensive bulb that I was trying this method on, I might take that precaution. However, I have never done this to the bulbs and I have very good success rate.

I have never done it before at that stage and I have never read about anyone doing it, so I really can't say. If its a common bulb that would be easy to replace, I would just try it and see if it works.

@@hollyk72I’ve been moving my amaryllis belladonnas down my property line for years not knowing what I was doing. Tried every technique that I thought might work. I put the seeds in the ground. Chopped stalks and planted them too. I pulled some bulbs up yesterday and couldn’t resist cutting them in half. Your video is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!! I’d like to know if you could dice a bulb like an onion and eventually get a bulb from each piece eventually. I’m gonna try it. lol

Holly, you said a bulb which had no green growth. Will it not work with a huge mature amaryllis bulb. I accidentally sliced a piece off of one of my very impacted bulbs that I received from a friend. Not sure if that bulb can still be planted, or if it will get diseased having a slice section
@hollyk72 Жыл бұрын
Yes, it will! I only said that because you usually wouldn't start dividing until the growth season was over. BUT, so long as a portion of the basal plate is there, it should grow a new plant.
