Hilarious, tragic, stirring, this fly-on-the-wall look at several weeks in an Iranian divorce court provides a unique window into the intimate circumstances of Iranian women’s lives. Following Jamileh, whose husband beats her; Ziba, a 16-year-old trying to divorce her 38-year-old husband; and Maryam, who is desperately fighting to gain custody of her daughters, this deadpan chronicle showcases the strength, ingenuity, and guile with which they confront biased laws, a Kafaka-esque administrative system, and their husbands’ and families’ rage to gain divorces.
With the barest of commentary, acclaimed director Kim Longinotto turns her cameras on the court and lets it tell its own story. Dispelling images of Iran as a country of war, hostages, and “fatwas”, and Iranian women as passive victims of a terrible system, this film is a subtle, fascinating look at women’s lives in a country which is little known to most Americans.
Directed by Kim Longinotto and Ziba Mir-Hosseini, author of Marriage on Trial: A Study of Islamic Family Law.

I watched this about 7 years ago and it popped back up n my feed today. Still shocking to see a young teenage girl trying desperately to divorce her old husband. Old men have no business messing with young teenage girls. He is old enough to be her father. So disgusting. Loved the clap back, "Serves you right for marrying a 14 year old girl."

@@kgs2280 it is not rape. they are not children. you are brainwashed. she is a female. he is a male. it was intended by god that the man and woman should be together. a girl becomes a woman at her first period. god does not say a man should be a certain age or a woman either. even in the west, there is disagreement about the age of consent. is 14 too young? is 18 too young? is 30 too young? it depends on the individual. it is not man's place to say this. Hi everyone In my country, Iran, these inhumane laws are still being implemented, none of the international organizations help us and only express concern. In 2021 to 2023, according to the statistics of the Iranian authorities, there were 27,000 cases of child marriage, that is, the marriage of girls under the age of fifteen. No one really hears the voice of us Iranian people Another interesting law, which is the most brutal, is that if a father sees a mistake in his child, he can kill his child according to the order of Islam, but Islamic law says that because the father created his child, he can also end his life. These are only a small part of the ruling laws. It is on my country. Hoping for a day when peace reigns in the whole world ✌🕊

In Islamic law Right of execution is the hands of court NOT individuals, execution by an individual is called vigilantism (taking law into your own hands) which is prohibited in every law, as all laws want power to be with court. A person can kill another only in case of self defence. Also execution of guilty is conducted in few cases like murder, r pe, adultery etc You're trying to portrait a false image of that "My son plays fortnite all-day, I'll execute him' ridiculously funny how much lack of information or tendency of lying you have. Whom took care of you and your education (I would understand if you didn't have mother) 3. Why are you so against equality? Afraid that women are better than you or noone will babysit you like your mom? 4. All those invention you talked about how many of them were males , why were they able to make these invention? 5. Until 20th century, there was hardly any educational institute that accepted women. Why ? If they did, would women's contribution equal to men? 6. Why is majority of histories tyrant and cowards are male and why women always seem to bear responsibility?

So true, I can’t stop crying , it happened exactly the same to me and my poor little two kids when I was in Iran and got divorced… I had no right as a woman in Iran and I never forget those horrible days, but finally 6 years after divorce with so many ups and downs and unbelievable fights and miracles I was able to scape from Iran with my two kids and come to US . It was a miracle more breathtaking than movies…we have a happy life here and we all are very successful. We are so grateful and no one know what we have gone through. We were so lucky but unfortunately end of the story of most divorced women and theirs kids are so sad.

Very beautiful an touching documentary. thank you for keeping and sharing this priceless piece of work. As an Iranian who faced all of these problems as a kid, I went to my mom and said: "Hey ma, Look what I found. These people has the same problems as you did before." and she said: "You see a family court in Iran and you've seen them all. That's why the judges won't listen to people anymore cause they all have the same problems!" My mom divorced like 22 or 23 years after this movie and it's very unfortunate and sad to say that we got the same problems in our society still! You know it's illegal in Iran to take any camera or phone or etc. to court, This proves the high value of this documentary. Thanks again and may God help us all!

This is such an extraordinary documentary on so many levels. Almost each of these micro-stories has a very dramatic arc but with moments of tenderness and even humour. The incredible ability of the women to fight for their rights, still hoping they will obtain them, even though they constantly hit a brick wall, are judged as always being at fault, and are even given so many hurdles to jump and expected to renounce was nothing short of inspiring. Even the very young woman and the child had a mature and determined way of expressing themselves. What is heartbreaking (among the many terribly sad things) is that these men refuse to pay the women what was promised, which is important because the price was also based on them being virgins, (therefore less valuable in further marriages) and being there to serve and obey, even when the men did almost nothing to be worthy of all this obedience. I truly hope that at some point the filmmakers are able to find these people and let them talk about how their lives progressed. I was also stunned that there were no real professional figures to assist these women, that they would write their petitions on the street. The judge already knew what he wanted the result to be as soon as he laid eyes on the women. Telling a woman to change and “win back” her husband who was cruel and controlling was all he could think of to say. As if the fault of divorce was always with the women being unable to please the men. So much food for thought here, and so much admiration for these women who deserve so much more.

@@salmanjama6663 I don't understand how a husband can have a say on where she goes. There is a difference between wanting to keep someone safe and demanding they listen to everything you say and do things their way. I was engaged to a Muslim man and he thought he could treat me this way. No way! I was born in a civilized society where partners are equal. If there are concerns, we discuss them. If you try to control a person like that, they are going to push back so hard. Nobody wants their lives dictated in that way. At the end of the day, my body and my safety are my concern, nobody elses. I feel so bad for women that have to live like this. I couldn't imagine the mental anguish day after day not being able to live freely. I left my fiance. He wanted to CONTROL EVERYTHING I did. EVERYTHING. He moved to a secular country but thought he could push his stone-age beliefs on women who just do not live that way. He made me become a person I didn't even recognize anymore. I always felt so angry and reactive. Even my family said I had changed. I am a happy, funny person. I have a good heart and did not deserve that kind of treatment. I feel SO BAD for women that have to endure this.

Men are allowed to divorce, have more than one wife and keep their children. These poor women are just like any other women, & I'm glad to see that they stand up for themselves, but the rules are injustice and so unfair.

They don't know GOD, if they did they wouldn't live this way. Their many prayers won't give them eyes to see and ears to hear because they are spiritually blind. They are praying to a god made up by a man who was insane. In these societies women and children are a man's property, he owns them. So if there is a divorce she is sent away but he keeps the children; they belong to him. They rip these women and children apart mercilessly. In America, the children stay with the mother, unless they can prove that she is unfit, they stay with the woman that nurtured them from the womb and birthed them and the man is held financially responsible for ensuring that his child is taken care of and that he maintains a relationship with his child. These people don't know how to live. It's so sad that they continue in ignorance throughout the ages.
@mohammadsalman57

You may not like this law but I think it keeps in mind the well being of the children first and foremost, what grantees do the mother or judge has that the new step father won't abuse or hurt the children when their biological dad is well capable of caring for them, we have seen sad stories about this quite a bit in the west especially with female children. Overall It's a fascinating glimpse into the social fabric of Iran. While it's easy now to preach women rights, 1500 years ago, Islam brought many rights to women centuries before the west, the right to inherit, run business, work, study, vote and fight. Generally speaking If you look at the root cause of all these problems and divorce proceedings they are no different than any other place in the word, they drill down to money, child custody, or abusive relationships regardless of the laws. The girl who was 15 years old when she got married, big deal? marriage age in Canada just few years ago was 14 and now it's up to 16. So it's not crazy around many places in the world to marry girls that young. The official age for marriage in Iran is 13 but only with family and clerk approval. of course the clerk was mistaken. The age of the prophets wife Aisha wasn't 9 when he married her. As we know at the time there was no birth certificates, Aisha age at that time was at least 20 years compared to her sister Sukaina's age and other major events around that time.

American Boys I must correct your knowledge sir. A 9 year old girl, has not reached puberty at that age...this is the onset of puberty. Justified as an accepted norm with social and financial benefits, child marriage has little or no benefit for the young girls themselves, who are more vulnerable to domestic violence, more likely to be uneducated, and more likely to bear children before they are physically ready. Indeed, some young brides who die every year as a result of pregnancy or childbirth complications, early marriage is a death sentence. Approximately 16 million girls aged 15 to 19 years and 2.5 million girls under 16 years give birth each year in developing countries. Complications during pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death for 15 to 19 year-old girls globally. Adolescent mothers (ages 10 to 19 years) face higher risks of eclampsia, puerperal endometritis, and systemic infections than women aged 20 to 24 years. Adolescent pregnancy remains a major contributor to maternal and child mortality, and to intergenerational cycles of ill-health and poverty. So, you actually believe that 9 year old girl, because she has started menstration, can take on the responsibilities of being a wife and mother??

Take for instance that other lady who said she'd rather kill her daughter or throw her under a car than give her to her ex-husband. Sounds brutal in the English language but acceptable in Farsi and the Iranian culture in that specific context. Changing who you are is not how a genuine successful marriage works and about as uneducated advice as he could give. When you love someone, you want them to be who they really are and you love them for being that individual. When people genuinely love each other for who they are, not an altered version they try to create, then they naturally like and respect each other along with that love. Xiven X I agree with you to an extent. Most countries have some aspects of socialism. In the U.S., welfare and the public education system are a form of socialism. Both are the opposite of capitalism, where limitations don’t exist and reward comes to those who go beyond the minimum. In capitalist societies, owners are allowed to keep the excess production they earn. And competition occurs naturally, which fosters advancement. However, capitalism also tends to create a sharp divide between the wealthiest citizens and the poorest, with the wealthiest owning the majority of the nation's resources. I don’t know what the answer is, but the extreme in either socialism or capitalism in not a benefit to society as a whole.

I’ve been impressed too. I figured they’d get punched in the mouth for being so assertive. I do wish women understood that judges view them as hysterical if they raise their voice or get emotional. It’s wrong, but that’s how men (and women judges) are. They see the woman rattling on in a high-pitched voice while the man is being quiet and reserved, and they tend to favor the man because the man isn’t causing the judge anxiety. Please, women, be as calm and collected as possible in court, so there’s some chance the judge will listen to you. It’s not our fault we have higher voices snd we get emotional at times, but men are too dumb to handle it well. You need to speak and behave more like a man for best results. (I hate it too, but men have to be treated like the babies they are.)
