A powerful piece! The title refers to a mountainous region in Crimea, Uch-Kosh (Уч-Кош). I have looked up the Wikipedia biography of Sergei Bortkiewicz, and it gives one example of how life was during the turbulent history of Europe in the first half of the 20th Century.
