the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. kzbin.infoUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

I built a couple of those yesterday and they came out fantastic! I was a little intimidated at first with all the angles but it ended up being a breeze. Only change I made was with the top horizontal strip. I found when picking the box up I was grabbing under that, and I could definitely feel it shifting a little with just glue and nails. So I put a couple screws in each one and it’s solid as a rock.

Hey brother just made one of these for the first time today. Had a blast and it turned out nice. Got a chance to use some cool tools and techniques - the taper and trim make this pop for sure and using the brad nailer was key. Added a couple tapered scraps for a shelf about 8 inches under the top and it worked well to hold a smaller pot for now. Will be giving a few away and Im sure peeps will be hitting me up when their friends see these. Thanks man!

I have been watching a lot of your vids lately and just picked up some fence pickets to build one of these for a trial to see how it looks. I love the idea of using cheap lumber and milling it to make what you want. Especially in Australia at the moment, the price is ridiculous, if you can even get what you are after. I just paid $6 each for 4 foot pickets, so it will be a tad over $10 by the time it's done, but still cheaper than furniture grade timber.

I wasnt sure whether pressure treated 2x's were essential or not. i have untreated laying around, so i plan on just ripping those for now for prototype and making my jig. I plan on using spar urethane as a finish. Treated lumber seems more ideal for a trellis, but does treated lumber bend as easily?

Well Matthew, you have been an inspiration for this old fart. I've always played around with furniture building as a hobby my whole life until 8 years ago when I was involved in a very bad motorcycle wreck that left me disabled.(caused by a drunk and doped up cager) Two years later, when I was finally able to walk again I started playing around in my little woodshop again to have something to do, sitting around with my leg propped up just ain't my gig. I've slowly drifted away from furniture, needed something lighter to work with. Bought a wood lathe last October and fell in love with that but I still love sawing and hammering on stuff. I've found that a lot of your stuff is right up my alley! I enjoy building a lot of the stuff that you do videos on,who says an old dog can't learn new tricks!😎 Built a couple of the smaller farmhouse planters yesterday and just finished a tall one a few minutes ago. Keep em coming Mathew! Just gotta say one more thing. 5' 10"?!?! I figured you were taller bro!😂🤣😅

@@andrewsmithmilan1780 you can look it up in KZbin. It’s an 18”x18” board with the 6” hole in the center. Sits at 10 degrees like regular cornhole boards. It’s regulation size and used for airmail tournaments and for training to get the bags in the hole without sliding. Makes the person more accurate. Has to set at the same height in the back with that same slope. Check them out, lots of cool stuff you can do with them.

Matt, I agree with all these comments who are saying that you are knocking it out of the park with these videos. I just wish I could get cedar pickets here in New England. At the big box stores, 10 of the pressure treated pine cost $77. Honestly, the biggest problem is that I'm giving them as gifts for mothers day, house warmings don't have any left to sell!!

Awesome as always! Want to commend you for being such an inspiration to others that with some basic tools, building and creativity is within everyone's grasp. Get over the fear and just do it. A saying I'm working by lately is "get out of your own way". I'm very inspired and beginning to do projects I never would have imagined I'd do. Keep it up! A suggestion for the patreon page would be showing the process of creating and brainstorming these things and the failed attempts that inevitably ensue.

Brother what you are doing here is giving tons of people basic builds, saving money and building basic skills. This is wonderful. The hardest part that I can't seem to source the cedar at the $3.99 price point. The pressure treated Southern Yellow pine dog ear fence picket runs $2.18 for a 5/8 - 5-1/2" - 6' long. Lowes is stuff as you really need to fish through the pile to fine enough good boards. Would love to find a source that I could have delivered in bulk. Keep up the great work. After I get some of these built, I will taking your idea and making window box modified to go on a test or porch.

I've been building the "Farmhouse" style planters and selling them for $50 in my area. I did my first batch out of the 5/8" pickets, but even using your plans, I had to add an extra picket for every 3 planters. Apparently my dog-eared 6' pickets have a different dog ear cut that messes up the 3rd board. Anyway, my last batch I just made, I used some 3/4" pickets that my local Lowes started selling. They are about a dollar more per picket, but they are smooth. No roughness to sand. Saves me alot of time, which more than makes up for that extra dollar per picket. I just have to trim the edges of the back panels on back wall "B" to get them to assemble correctly. Also, they take the screws better than the 5/8 soft boards.

I bought the lumber on day 1, Day 8 they got cut all to size. Day 15 still on om my work bench waiting to be assembled. Now the boards warped a little. Almost 3 months after buying the lumber I took the afternoon and put it all together. I made so many errors I needed to correct but it was fun. Now all together and very sturdy even with assembly errors but my wife like it. Now she wants a 6 foot long one.

I did all my cuts per the plans purchased, love the way you set up the pdf. I assembled all my boxes, one out one in style. Went to stack them and boxes D and E are too large to be cohesive, the overhang on the sides doesnt allow the trim to be added. The first planter I used critical thinkkng and leveled the vertical edge sticking out, then removed some of backing from the wider Leg so it would fit. It works for now but the rest of the board is over hung, so will be facing away from the street and not visible to most. I will to experiement with shorten measurements for D and E. The 2nd planter i will try this on, hopefully get it all even out. I am also going to add a shelf so pots will sit instead of hang for dear life by their plastic edging. Dont need a traumatized plant 😂

@ArayahIru 6 ай бұрын
Great news to share, I took apart the D and E boxes, picked 2 pieces and started trimming small amounts off keeping that wonderful 3 degree off 90. Successfully got rid of the jut out. I kept the 1st tower as is and decided to add stain to specific areas to create illusion of evenness. Excited to continue forward now. If you don't experience challenges in life, then you can't grow. I’ve been using that exact pencil for all my woodworking for over 15 years, it makes a really precise line for precision work. I started using them when I did siding and making door and window wraps because they had to fit together perfectly or they would look like crap. That’s the only pencil I use. Carpenter pencils are for people that don’t need anything precise. Can’t stand to use them. Great video.

The planters look really nice. However, being on the tall side, I would be afraid that with a potted plant in them it would be top heavy and might fall over. Additionally, the planter sitting in water would damage the bottom. So, my suggestion is to perhaps build a footed platform in the bottom, which would raise the planter and add some needed weight to it. Maybe use 2×4 for the footed platform and maybe put a small patio stone or a brick or 2. Just my 3 cents....

Splendid video. I don't build for money, but I do for gifts, and family & friends just love the side-table and planters. I finally ran out of the pickets I got for free (I had to demo the fence), and I looked at HD for new cedar pickets. Today (2/Jul/2022) HD has 19/32in x 5 1/2in x 6ft western red cedar for $3.78 + tax (8.52% or $0.32 so $4.10 per picket). BUT HD also has 5/8in x 5 1/2in x 5ft (a foot shorter and ever so little thicker) for $2.57 (with tax $2.79) - That is a significant saving over the 6ft picket. About $1.21/sqft compared to $1.49/sqft, about 20% less/sqft for the 5ft pickets. I found even better savings at Lowes (in Longmont, CO), $2.18 (inc tax) for the 5-footer and $4.30 (inc tax) for the 6ft picket - a whopping 51% less for the 5-footer. WHY? Why is the 5ft picket so much cheaper than the 6ft picket?

My local lowes and home depot only carry pressure treated fence pickets and neither had cedar when I went today. Gonna keep looking around

Love the videos and ideas. Pinterest is addicting. Lol. I send you a planter I did with laser engraving from one of you latest videos and a hall mirror with Vancouver island and live edge. To bad we can't post pictures on KZbin. Cheers Steve

Hey! So think about why they may not be selling... is it price, location, competition? Do a lil homework... find the issue and be fluid. Change things up a bit!

Thats Awesome Ken! I'm just trying to keep you busy. lol. Give folks more options... market the others as planters and these as stands. Stage them up together like a set. Bam... 4 sales at once.

Third one is ALSO a charm - just like the first two !! Matthew you rock ! I have one question - these picket boards you mention are they 60 inches or 72? I believe the one I found are all 60 inches. Thanks for your help. And keep up the great work of inspiring us.
