Man, you changed my life with this. I’ve wanted to get into wood working since I was a little kid, I’m 22 now and decided to go all in on this with $28 in my bank account because times are so rough. All I had was a jigsaw and sand paper but they turned out pretty good, posted them on Facebook, got an order for 2, sold them for $90, bought a table saw, and now here I am booked halfway thru July all because of YOU! THANK YOU

I'm almost 50, and while handy, have never built anything with wood in my life. For whatever reason this video popped on my feed and I was hooked. Went out and bought some beginning level saws and made this planter. Showed my fiancée and she flipped out. Posted on facebook that we were taking orders and in 4 hours I have 10 ordered!!! One guy wanted something taller, so showed him a picture of your tall planter and he wanted 2 of those!! Your channel is amazing, keep it up!!

This is a great wood project book kzbin.infoUgkxkPIWb22DigCqxmlXerCyUF4HCl6eSU2L . Most of the projects use the pallet simply as a source of reclaimed wood not as a recognizable pallet so even if you didn't have a pallet you could make these projects with any reclaimed (or even new) wood. The instructions are excellent. The style is charming and would work with lots of different decor. There are quite a number of projects that involve tiling of teh wood pieces which is a really cool idea and can produce beautiful pieces when working with aged wood.

I did not believe 3 pickets were enough. I was going to buy the plans but then I just decided to use the video. I cut down 6 pickets into exactly enough for 2 boxes and built a box in one afternoon. I now have jigs, and enough material to build another box. I think I'm going to buy the plans because I don't have a way to tip for this amazing video!

I've been looking at your products for quite a few months now. I decided to take one on. This took me a little longer to build than I thought but it came out looking good. Just as a suggestion to see if it would work, how about putting a 2-in piece in the middle of the A sides? That way it would close together with the B sides. I look forward to building a lot more of your projects. I also suggest if you're a rookie, buy an extra picket if you're just going to build one. I had to use half of the extra one for this first time. Thanks again for inspiring an 83-year-old to get back to work.

I love these little boxes, and I really love the trellis idea in conjunction with the box as an add-on. I think that iteration will be a big hit near me, so I am going to build a few and see how I do. I am a rank amateur with only about one year's experience in woodworking, but this is well within my capabilities. My dad was a master woodworker years ago, but I didn't have much interest in working with him when I was young, so now I'm starting almost from scratch. He's still alive and lives with my wife and I, but at 95 years old, even though he is as healthy as a teenager, he doesn't trust his balance and slow reflexes enough to work with power tools anymore, which means he doesn't ever come down to the garage to see what's going on. The long hill is too much for him. So, I am learning with your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and skills!!

I would suggest putting pocket screws into crossboards and and B for strength. Your asking a lot of that small bite for the wall to hold that piece in place. Plus if you do it on the crossboards the wall boards will hide the holes after.

I found out the pickets at Lowes are about 1/16 to 1/8 inch narrower. I went to home depot and they seem to be better quality and slightly wider. I'm hoping to nail down the correct order of cutting to get them out of 3 pickets. I'll let you know if I pull it off.

Okay, I bought the cedar months ago thinking this should be easy. Well, I sold my table saw when I moved back to Nevada so all I had was a scroll saw that won't stay working, a circ saw, a jigsaw and several hand saws. I finally got sick of waiting, bought a broken dilapidated table saw and rebuilt it, not my first rodeo. Its 118 degrees out so I quickly cut all my pieces and assembled it on my kitchen island. This is so fabulous! Thank you so much!! I've been fighting my way back from a knee blowout while installing flooring so this was my first physical success in 6 months!

Dude Matthew - you are amazing. I built the original planter which is beautiful although I did have several issues with the pocket screws splitting the wood inspite of predrilling. I experimented with scrap wood using various combinations of depths on my pocket hole jig (Massca) and finally perfected it to where I have no more split wood. That was a great learning experience. It's funny that you have a planter with the trellis as I had thought of doing exactly that on a larger planter box (4' x 2' x 2') I built. Happy Mother's day to your mom and wife!

I have now made three of these, and the first one I used a 1in middle wall board, but have now changed to an 1 3/4 in for the middle wall board. i noticed in the start and end of this video, that the ones with the lattice framework, that they appear to be 1 3/4 not the 1in. The 1 in works, just had to be careful in nail/screw placement as it was super close. The plans are amazing as always, and I have enjoyed the build a lot, as does my yard :D ha.... Thank you!!!

Hi Matt, I purchased your plans and am excited to build these. I did want to mention a change to the design I made that involves materials. Home Depot sells a much higher grade treated fence picket for $2.78 that I am using to build 5 of these. It's 80 cents more, but it is still 6 foot long but a full 6" wide, 3/4" thick instead of 5/8", is lightly sanded and even has a coat of waterproofing stain applied! I looked through the design and the only real impact that I can see is that the "Middle Wall" pieces can be eliminated as the wider picket stock covers the entire side of the box. Also, I can use my existing stock of 1 1/4" exterior screws instead of the harder to find 1" screws.

How did you manage to inlay panel B into A if you're using 3/4" thick material? I also have 3/4" thick material (5 1/2" wide) but it's 1/16" too narrow on each side of A that B sticks out when I attach them together so from the outside it's not flush. How'd you make yours work?

So, I am watching backwards a little. After several of your others, I jumped in on your multi level planter and bit the bullet for a Kreg. I have resisted for years, but it was too cool to not try. I even did the math on those "expensive" screws vs modification to brackets. Obvious choice these days was the Kreg. I also admit I did not buy your plans because you are quite easy to follow. I made only one mistake but it fixed no issues. I used all cedar (I own the mill) and it is FANTASTIC. Now I find these planters just as lovely and no Kreg... 😅😅 I have no idea why I resisted all these years except pride. Money well spent. Thanks for all you are doing, you inspired me to go past just selling the lumber, and at the very least, I have stuff that encourages sales of materials. Gonna catch that cat one way or the other!

Even though I think it’s due to some shots I deceived in the Navy I can’t prove it so no help there. Anyway woodwork has been my love for many years and going from making toys for my kids and now grand kids to small furniture for friends and family I’m hoping to supplement some of my income this way. Your tutorials are a God send to me. I’m not sure how you got every board from three pickets exactly but I guess I can work on that or do like I did and just use 4. Maybe I can use sketchup and do a cut sheet layout from that lol. Ok, finally made one of these only took 2 days, 😆. Yes, I made a few mistakes and yes some of the pickets were only 4 3/4in wide near the top and bla, bla, bla!!!! After a couple redos and figuring out a few things to better suit me I finally finished. Looks great wife is happy. Couple tips, MAKE sure to straighten out bows or curves, sand well before you even start also check the thickness of the boards IT MATTERS! My added little twist, I'm making a top cover as well. My wife pulls her plants in during the winter so make a cover when not in use and it's still a decorative piece plus you could store items in it as well. Can't wait to make more.

Your other video encouraged me to build a few of the wedge shaped ones. They came out pretty good for someone who's only ever built rectangle speaker boxes. lol. never cut a bevel on anything before. I learned a lot doing that!

Just built one and it turned awesome, but be sure to measure your pickets. Bought the cedar pickets from Home Depot in my area and they only measured 5 3/8" wide. So I had to adjust my middle wall broad width. Love watching and learning from your videos. Keep up the good work.

Apologies if someone else has commented on this, but I saw this on A Glimpse Inside's channel that he buys his screws from CS Hardware (just search for it). They seem to carry all sorts of fasteners at very reasonable bulk prices. Great series, Matt! Keep up the great builds and ideas.

fantastic, its unreal how people want to cheap out when building things liek this to sell. you cheapen it out you wont sell many and word gets out. pin nails and glue wont last at all. 10 bucks for 300 screws is cheap unreal how people dont want to built the right way. going to order these plans Keep up the great work and lessons

One of the first times I used a nailer I put a nail in my finger. It only went about 1/2" deep, but that was all I needed to figure out that just because it looks like you're lined up well doesn't mean the nail is going where you think it is.

Matt, I was unsure that these could be made with three (3) pickets but you are right they can. A little update on material and price as of 3/14/2023 in my area in Michigan. The big orange guy has 3/4x6x6 treated for $2.68 each. Yes real 3/4 thick but the width is 5 3/4 that is strange and they have a 5/8 red pine treated which is 5/8 thick for $2.97 each The big blue guy has 5/8 nom. cedar which all of them are running 1/2" thick for $3.97 each The treated pine is also nominal 5/8" but all are at 1/2" thick for $2.18 each. Nice simple design for the planter and looks good. Good Job

This is just perfect! For years I have needed and wanted LARGE 16x16 wood planter boxes, but honestly the box stores were always too expensive for me. IF i can make 16x16 boxes for 15 $ each I will be very happy ($6 is probably a pipe dream for me so $15 is a happy price i can afford, cuz I kinda think the bottom needs to be a bit more sturdy to support the payload of dirt and plant plus a plastic liner to keep it from drying out too fast). TY for this video!

I also like doing kits, single repeatable tasks is an easy mind set to get into. You can do atleast atleast 100 kits on a good long summer day. I'm trying to buy a big house near a college and will have extra rooms would love to trade the low rent value for a few days of labor a month. Kits seem like a great way to put the interns to work.

On the final steps of building my box and it has been amazingly painful. I don't know what I am doing wrong; I am following your directions meticulously--even triple checking. I can definitively state that this build is tremendously more difficult when you don't have a brad nail gun. Thankful for your guidance but so frustrated at my outcome.

This style has been referred to as Crossbuck. It was/is popular on storm doors. It represents a rustic farmhouse country style as seen on barn doors etc. love your ideas and simple instructions. I am more of a visual hands on learner, although I can follow drawings as well, and appreciate seeing your techniques being demonstrated. I am sure there are many other’s like me. Keep up the great work!!

Great design. This is no way a criticism. Just 2 points on making these. 1. I purchased 6 fence boards to make 2 of these. Board were a little wide so I ripped them to 5 1/2". 4 months later when I went back to build these my boards were 5 3/8. DON'T WAIT 4 MONTHS TO BUILD WITH PRESSURE TREATED WOOD. 2. Also, I had to buy a 7th fence board to finish. I am sure that I could have been more efficient with my cuts and the thinner boards led to some cutoffs that were too thin to use. Just some observations. No criticism. They turned out great. Everyone loves them.

I made one. The cutlist tool I used neglected a few pieces tho, so I have to re-figure that out. Picket wood splits easily, so you must drill holes for screws, and not too close to the ends. I found the edges to be really close in places, had to drill and screw at an angle. Mines a bit wobbly so I may try glueing and rescrewing the panels. I am going to keep following and trying your other projects. Keep em coming.

Loved the design. One question... Why the gap on the backside when attaching panel A to panel B?. Seems like it would be sturdier if both panels only had the 11/16th side.

Why is it taking me more than 3 pickets? Are you using 6ft pickets? Rookie woodworker here... I made one and it turned out great, but I had to use a small section of a 4th picket to get enough to make it. I had very little scraps left over. On the 2nd one I've sat down and made a detailed cut list and tried to get as much as I can out of each picket, and I'm still short and would need a 4th picket. Any advice on what I might be doing wrong? These are great, just wish I could figure out how to do it with 3 pickets!

I think your video is great and very well thought out, but my slight change did help me. I have found that putting a pocket hole screw on each of the cross boards add much more strength to the over all structure. Thanks again for your extremely miserly use of materials.

I went over to Lowe's and saw their cedar trellis's and they are$30-$40 for a really cheap thin frame. If they can sell cheap stuff for that much I know well built trellises could go for a lot more. I'll be trying these ideas out. I just finished my first cedar planter and can't wait to do more. Thanks Matthew!!
