I am not a pro, but a pretty skilled owner. This video was very helpful and I really appreciate it a lot. About 3 hours to tear everything down, 1 hour to get a few missing parts (cover nut fell in a crack in the cement and I did not have enough O rings for the front sensors) and about 4 hours to get everything back together. The gasket kit that I got required that I remove about 1/4" of gasket material off of the top (the part that goes into the cover) for it to seat right. Recommend a good telescoping magnet and a swivel head ratchet. Dealer could not believe that I was doing this and said that half of their techs would not be able to get this done on time. May the karma gods smile upon you well for taking the time to help others with this vide.

@@Zeiten Would I be able to clean my clogged secondary air system while doing this procedure?
@Zeiten
@Zeiten 3 жыл бұрын
I’d say no, for that you’ll need to remove your intake manifold and then secondary air injection valve then you’ll be able to do it. During valve cover gaskets replacement there is no extra room for it

i would have gotten the correct valve gasket. Mine has small ridges at the base of the gasket that prevents complete seating but there must be a reason.

Very helpful and detail informative video, I just successfully did my 08 E66 driver side VCG & TCG with viewing your procedures two or three times before I started. it took me about two half days total 8-9 hours for one side. the first try without remove the fuel injectors stuck me one hour or more and after remove the fuel injector it is quite easy to take VC out w/o touch e. f. sensor. so I must say I did every single steps you did make VCG & TCG replacement a easy and straight forward job. Thanks again for shooting such a detail diy video.

Great video and appreciated! Unfortunately I had to redo this job using this video after paying a shop to complete it 18 months ago. The idiots that completed the request seemed to have an affinity to Perm-a tex. I found it everywhere, even inside the spark plug tubes. It was everywhere... There were two stripped lower nuts to my surprise. In the end I cleaned every part I touched, replaced all o-ring seals and feel better about the future performance of the vehicle. Without the video I'm not too sure my level of excitement to do this job was there! Again, thank you for sharing your skills!

However, I have to recheck the passenger side for a little leak coming from the rear of the cover. Thanks you.

Great video my bro. Super detailed and VERY HELPFUL! The only feedback I can give as a videographer is to try to record with auto-focus turned OFF. It makes it very hard to see the small spaces and details with the camera going in and out of focus from auto-focus function. When shooting very close in these types of videos setting the focus manually will work very well. An easy and basic way to do this is to stand in the general distance you will be shooting, use zoom to zoom in all the way to a shiny object, focus with focus ring manually, then zoom back out. Now you should have a good general focus point that will work for the whole shoot. If you want to come in for some close shots, just go in as far as needed before it goes out of focus and slightly move focus ring to adjust for the shorter distance and move back to where it was when you pull back out to the original distance. Hope that makes sense. Basic but super helpful and it will provide more quality in your amazing videos. Thanks again!!

The engine problems are the main issues with BMW's and most of the issues are from crap gaskets and seals. If the Germans could figure out how to stop leaks, the BMW's would be near-perfect cars. The power and handling are terrific and they're wonderful to drive.

As Arthur said...good call. Wife bought a 2008 650i convertible with a little over 100k on it about 8 months ago. It has been either sitting in my garage (in my spot) or sitting in the grass next to my shop for most of this time. Started puffing white smoke with acceleration, especially after idling for a few seconds (read as sitting at stop light) about 2 months after purchase. Then, it decided to start leaking coolant...while sitting still...with the engine off. She finally had it hauled to the repair shop a couple of days ago. She had purchased a power train and labor warranty good for one year, so we figured we were okay. Nope. Come to find out, pretty much every f-ing gasket on this thing needs replaced. Guess what the warranty doesn't cover? The car is beautiful. It's just poorly engineered. Doesn't even have a dipstick! You're supposed to trust their on board computer. Last time I checked, computers were not where the Germans excelled. I think I'll just stick with the basic, old reliable brands. Wife has a 2006 Acura TL with 268k and it still runs like a champ. Has a couple of minor issues that will cost about 15% of what this thing is going to cost to fix. And I've got a 2012 Chevy HD with Duramax with 161k that has been awesome. Hard to over engineer a diesel and make it a turd. Guess that's why they don't make very many.

Well, hard to say, depends on your skill level, you can manage to do everything in 8 hrs, start with valve cover gaskets and upper timing chain cover gaskets, just fo 1 side at a time and you should be fine, split the job in 2 or more days lets say 1 days for each side of valve cover gasket and the other day for alternator bracket gasket since those jobs do not interfere with each other

Got a 2003 BMW 745i 4.4 v8, Replaced the Thermostat/housing, Coolant drained and filled, Oil Change/Oil Filter Changed, Valve Cover Gaskets replaced on both sides, passenger Valve Cover was Cracked so it was replaced as well.. I am now getting a P0393 code, Cam Sensor Bank 2 sensor 2(exhaust). Engine is running rough, erratic Idle between 700-1500 RPM if it doesn't stall out, I reset those eccentric motors on top of the valve covers, tried swapping cam sensors around to see if the issue would change location but no change, I inspected the plugs they're tight, not damaged, no bent wires or frayed wires, pins feel tight, I tried swapping around the Vanos Solenoids, still no change, swapped around coil packs, no change. Pulled the valve cover a few times to see if something may have snagged but not seeing any visible issue.. any ideas?

Maybe this is no good, but wish that I would have taken the car to the car wash, take off both air boxes and the front intake and power wash both sides from the AC Compressor up through the front timing covers and then back down to the alternator bracket. Mine was a mess. You can leave the MAF and vacuum line hooked up and just lay the front intake upside down over the rest of the engine. You can get nearly anywhere with the air boxes and front intake tubes.

Is there a speical procedure to putting the valve motors back in? Ive almost got this entire job finished and wanted to make sure if there is a correct way of putting them back in, great video by the way, its been a huge help!

There is no special procedure for that, just screw them in and that’s it, nothing needs to be done after that at all also

Depends on where you live, here in California 5 or 10w-30(40) castrol edge is perfect, as a rule in general i would say castrol edge, liqui moly or motul are a great choice

Happy New Year Tim, Thanks for your previous response. I'm almost finished with this job. The gasket kit you sent came yesterday, thx. The question I have relates to the valve adjuster motors and their orientation. When i removed them they both had significant pre-load, especially the passenger side which was loaded well after the thread height of the retaining bolts. Is this normal? I would assume so. However when i reinstall the motors should I screw them all the way down and then install the retaining screws, or should i try to retain some of the previous tension in the threaded shaft? I have heard of engine misfire codes and rough running after removing and re-installing these adjuster motors. Thanks for any insight you can provide. Chip

So if the valve cover bolts don’t screw right on , that means it’s not seated properly ? I have one that feels proper but I’m having to put a lot of pressure for the bolts to catch the thread .

@@Zeiten This method worked perfectly, if anyone else have the same problem i suggest doing like Zeiten said. Just try keeping the socket straight over the bolt and hammer it all the way down! i used a 8mm.

The two steel lines right next to the passenger side valve cover have to be disconnected on a 650i otherwise the valve cover will be stick between them and the sensor, make sure to do this or you will damage the sensor and the valve cover.. its far more tedious job on a 650i. At any rate thanks this helped but you missed out on removing those two steel lines , that is important. one you do that all in all it takes 10 minutes to remove the valve cover , its easy.

Well, i performed this job countless times and on all models 5,6,7 series as well as x5, and if you are talking about a/c lines it can be helpful to move them aside a bit but not absolutely necessary. It is good to keep it in mind for those who do it for the first time, thanks

I have 3 questions 1. Did you have to put silicone on the vacuum pump when putting it back? 2. Why was there silicone on the vacuum pump to begin with? 3. Is there an oil pressure switch on the right side also, or only on the left? Thanks
@Zeiten
@Zeiten 4 жыл бұрын
No silicone needed, it was there because someone put there before, and oil pressure switch is only on passenger side

Shame you don't live in the UK, I would invite you to do the same to my 760li V12. Finding someone here to tackle it is near impossible as they view it as too difficult. Even BMW dealers are not interested and also would probably mess it up. 😭😭😭😭

why did you replace the oil pressure switch? and if we are in there anyway, shouldn't we replace the spark plugs?
@Zeiten
@Zeiten 4 жыл бұрын
Oil pressure switch is common spot for oil leak as well as vacuum pump o-ring while everything apart it’s easy to replace and doesn’t cost much, spark plugs replacement depends on when they were changed in this case they were replaced recently and there is no need to change them again just because valve covers are off and it’s easier
