Just finished my trap…wish me luck I might suggest not cutting the screens to fit vertical cutouts … just wrap the screens inside with a one inch overlay…Less precise gluing.

Really enjoyed the build video for this project and then seeing it in action. I'll bet your ducks & chickens would enjoy dining on "the catch". One thing I might do differently would be to snip the plug off the fan and wire it to the light bulb base. Then you'd only have one cord to plug in.
@alanesterline2310 Жыл бұрын
I used a lamp base that has a plug-in on it. Solves that, and with a three wire cord, one doesn't need to be worried about polarity on the cords if you follow color code.

Great project and comments. I would recommend one other. As this is used outdoors, to minimize electrocution, ditch the indoor 2 pronged plugs and wire and upgrade to grounded 3 pronged and common outdoor 2 wire plus ground wire.
@jimtoomey95223 жыл бұрын
And since it is outside in the elements, plug into a GFIC outlet so you won’t get electrocuted.
@thesparkster3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm a little worried about a Wal*Mart indoor fan being used. If there are any driving or angled rains, that thing's getting wet.
@jsaurman Жыл бұрын
The third (ground) wire is designed to be attached to a metal chassis, so if it accidently gets shorted to the hot, you won't get shocked. But since this entire device is plastic, there isn't any metal chassis for the ground wire to be attached to. So upgrading to a three wire plug would be worthless. That's also the reason most power tools have a two wire polarized plug, because the plastic case of those power tools has the same sort of setup. BUT, I will say that plugging it into a GFCI would be a very good idea. I do agree that would be the correct thing to do.

I’m guessing for this set up you could use a light socket that has an outlet so you could plug the fan into it and only have one cord going out to be connected to an extension cord?
@sidavis3 жыл бұрын
Great video .... looks like fun project ... Could I make a suggestion? While your cutting off plugs on the power supply line .. why don't you cut off the plug on the Fan unit at about 18" (or so) , strip the wires and connect them to the Light bulb socket at the same time you wired in the White power cord. This way you have only one power supply instead of two :)

Also, wear a pair of your old underwear for about a month or more straight (try to shower as little as possible) and then cut them up into a dozen pieces or so. Mount a piece of wire hanger next to the light bulb, and hang the pieces on it. Change out pieces once or twice a week. The bulb heats them up and the skeeters are really attracted to the smell.

@alanesterline2310 Жыл бұрын
June bugs are easy. You need an old single kitchen sink, a 5 gallon bucket about 1/4 full of water and several ducks. Put the sink on top of the bucket under a yard light. Empty every morning for the ducks and they will turn the June bugs into eggs. KISS, Keep It Super Simple!

Pro tip: Adding carbon dioxide as a lure will greatly increase your catch. A insulated drink container with dry ice would suffice.
@3Krazy832 жыл бұрын
I'm a tad bit confused: Are the mosquitos being pulled through the fan blades to get to the bottom?
@silentepsilon888 Жыл бұрын
yes, this trap is basically like a vacuum cleaner. The light attracts the insects which are then pulled into the bucket by the air that is moved by the fan. Once the insects are past the fan in the lower bucket, the air that is constantly pushing down into the bucket prevents the insects from flying back up and out of the top of the bucket. The airflow holds them down inside the bucket. Therefore keep in mind that once the fan is turned off, some insects could escape again through the top.

This was a great follow up to the build video. I was hoping to see it in action. I just built one and am excited to say it works!! Im going to attach a Octenol cartridge to it but not sure where it should be attached. If anyone has an idea on the best place to put the attractant please reply. I'm thinking right above the top of the fan and below the light should be the best spot so they enter right where the fan will suck them in.
@chadh34412 жыл бұрын
I would say put it on or near the bottom of the bucket on the outside so it draws the scent upwards. Putting it near the light is only going to draw the scent downward with less travelling outward. It would probably be better to attach a wire that's about 18 inches to 2 feet that extends away from the bucket. Using one of the handles you could bend an eyelet on one end and screw it to the bottom of the bucket and put the scent on the other end. With it on the bottom, more scent would be allowed to disperse in a broader area, than for it to be limited to such a small area around the light. At least it makes sense in my crazy mind. Lol

Not the absolute attractant, the mosquitoes are attracted to the CO2 that is exhaled. You can Wikipedia it !
@Jiggledance3 жыл бұрын
Buy Co2 making product for plants and put in place of the bulb. Also, create your own by putting bowl with foliage in it to rot and produce co2. Maybe make a 5 gallon bucket with lid, valve and garden hose running it up to trap to feed co2 to replace bulb.

@superspecialty51693 жыл бұрын
@@Jiggledance Then, what exterminates them?
@Jiggledance3 жыл бұрын
@@superspecialty5169 The co2 is bait, and the fan is to trap. The bucket is where they go via vacuum from the fan. Ideally, you would put the fan on the lower and put a screen on the back of it. The vacuum sucks them against the screen. Then when ready to dispose of them aka kill them, keep the fan on, take off the bugs that you do not want to kill, let them free, then kill those little suckers stuck against the screen. In that case, you would keep the same size fan if you want to save other little insects. If not just get a smaller fan to suck them into the bucket the way he has it set up.

To all those commenting about using other lights, like a green led: he said (I think in the other video about building it) to avoid led because you want the heat.
