just a note of clarity and correction. At the 10min mark- it might appear that he is pulling the key switch assembly out- but it is actually the housing that holds the key assembly that must come out far enough to reveal the pin hole to release the spring on the key assembly. The grey housing must come out of the black column till you can see the pin hole. The wires to the ignition are so tight that this can be a bit tricky. Thanks for the video. Good luck!

My dad passed away a year ago and he had a 1970 VW. It was passed onto me, but I have no clue where he left the key! The door was never locked. Can I replace the ignition switch and use the new key to open the door and engine bay. Or will I have to replace all the door handles and deck lid and carry around 3 set of keys?

If you remove the door handle and it’s original to the car there will be a key code stamped on it. Some vw dealers still can cut keys by code. Or, check places like thesamba.com. If it matches the ignition you’re back in business!

What do you. Do if the column is locked and you have no key i just need column free so itll steer

I have to see where them wires connect up. I got a pull my steering column this weekend. On my 68. I forgot they didn’t have plugs going to the ignition switch.

My ignition is "sensitive"; that is, it doesn't keep the car running unless I carefully hold the key after starting. Any ideas? The key portion works fine.

Sounds like the electrical portion is failing. Happens a lot.

Nice video! Question: I have a vw bug like yours with 3 dash defroster vents--mine came from Netherlands --and I've noted that US versions had padded dash. I desperately need to replace the 3 defroster vents that fit the metal dash beetles...where did you get yours??? Any help appreciated

Mine still has the original vents. Since this is a German market (non -USA) model it came with the steel dash. I'm not sure about a source for the vents. I'd check if the 66-67 style would work. Let us know!

My key won’t turn on my 69 beetle. Once did now it’s not turning. How do you get it out of the lock won’t turn?

So it won’t turn and you cannot remove the key? Under normal circumstances the key will only be held in place when it’s switched to the on position. However, if your key will not move at all, even in the off position, then I would recommend spraying some lubricant or penetrating oil around the key and seeing if you can work the key up and down to get it out. But remember this will only work if the key is in the off position.

If you don’t mind aftermarket, you can purchase a new ignition switch with keys. Personally, I’d take off a door handle and get a key cut for it. Chances are good that it will match the ignition.
