I’ve lived off-grid the last two years while I build my house. Also, I’m self employed and drive my truck w/an Alu Cab camper on the back all over the country for about 4-6 months each year. At home & on the road I’ve been using a 2 gallon plastic weed sprayer that works by hand pumping to pressurize the canister. I just heat up some water, pump it about 8-9 times, and I’ve got a great shower, hot or cool as I want it. I’ve got a little pack on it like the example in this video, and it holds a razor, soap, everything I might need while taking a shower. I’m able to use it right next to the truck, take it down to a stream, wherever. I love it. I’ve used the current one for 2 years. I leave it outside when I’m at home. Abused it. For $30, and as bulletproof as it’s been, I can’t imagine changing things up. Not to dog on this build, because it’s a great idea, but the fewer parts the better, in my opinion. YMMV! 👍🏼🙏🏼

Right on! I've been using a similar set up to yours for 7 or 8 years for camping. I replaced the weed sprayer wand with a sink sprayer and use it for showers and washing up dishes. It did randomly quit working on one trip. It had just gotten too much dirt/sand in it over the years of desert camping and the o-rings wouldn't seal when I tired pumping it. I got home, cleaned everything out, and greased the o-rings. It's been working great since. A bag to hold the soap and stuff is a good idea! I think I'll add one to mine too.

Good build, the only thing I would do differently if I made one would be to run the wires through the cap too, no extra holes in the can, and could restore to normal with a new cap.

On doing a bunch of testing, you are losing a ton of pressure by using the expandable hose. Switch to a short normal one and you will gain about 3x the pressure.

I don't think it will matter if it is really short, but maybe you are right, but it seemed good enough and the store away of the flex hose is probably worth it.
@dexterm2003
@dexterm2003 2 ай бұрын
That will absolutely not matter at all. The expanding hose only reacts to static pressure. You don't "lose pressure" when it expands if anything it "stores pressure" like an accumulator but the reason he doesn't have great pressure is the pump pure and simple.

I’ve tried several variations of this water tank, from a Schrader valve with a hand pump to electric air pump. I went this route but chose to run the electrical wiring through the lid with a 2 way switch. I preferred it is way so I can unscrew the lid and everything pulls out at once. When I have to fill it up with water it was easier for me since I carry it from the campsite to the provide water source. With the 5.2gpm pump it would spray 24’ and took ~3 minutes to empty tank. Thanks for the help!

Swapping the male to male fitting with a quick disconnect would make it much easier/faster to set up/break down. Also plumbing a clear tubing with 90° fittings on the tank from top to bottom would allow you to see the fluid level before you run out of water.

Thats good, but it creates a point of failure if the bottom of the container gets knocked you'll lose all of the water. The version i did personally just uses a similar water container but its transparent blue plastic. Can easily see the water level and theres no unnecessary holes or plumbing on it to leak, and it still slides into a regular jerry can holder

I can tell the different channels you got your ideas from. I too used the exact same parts, except the bag. I love the storage bag. I chose to use the cap for all my through holes. The wiring grommet I just pipe tapped the plastic and screwed in the grommet. I secured it with a small drop of epoxy, but if you're worried about chemicals in the water you could also use a dab of plumbing safe silicone sealant. I chose to only modify the cap because the cap can be replaced by purchasing it separately if I want to make changes, or I want to quickly convert it back to a simple water tank without the pump system. Nicely done. Love all your builds.

I like your spin on it with the attached bag. I built one of these a while back; do yourself a favor and ditch that battery pack. I've already gone through three of them. They don't last very long and are very temperamental. I upgraded to one of the emergency jumpstart booster packs and get a lot more voltage and hence a lot better flow, they last longer and are very rugged. I'm not crazy about the idea of running the wire out of the back, but I also use a lot more water when I use this setup. I like having everything built into the lid so that you can just move the pump to another jerry can when one runs dry. Excellent tutorial, keep up the good work. ✌🏻

Thanks for the comment! Yeah I don’t doubt that. That I’m also notorious for not charging everything I need that why I included the car power supply. Yeah being able to swap cans would be nice although I just have the one. You definitely have to think through what’s going to work for you individually. I noticed when I plugged it into my 100w solar panel I get waayy more pressure. I think it put out 20volts. Wasn’t sure if it would burn up the motor doing that.

@@PatrickRemington depends on the rating of the pump. Most of these small pumps have variable ratings. The one I have says it's good for 18-4v. The car jump starter I have is advertised as 12 volts but actually puts out 14.1 volts when put on a voltmeter. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I've held off on getting those quick disconnects for a few years because the descriptions were lackluster. If I knew they were both valved and no spill I'd have done it to begin with. I'm a trucker and I use 2 scepter cans interchangeably for water, and a marine 12v pump. Currently I just put a length of 3/8 id flexible hose through the spout and found a hose with a 5/8 od which seals perfectly to the spout with a regular o-ring. This will be so much easier.

Main issue I see is with the wiring running from the pump to the rear of the container is every time you unscrew the cap to fill with water you are twisting that wiring all around. I think you would be better off mounting the pump through the can somewhere other than the lid and then taking the cap on and off does not affect the pump, hoses or wiring at all.

Upgrading to the higher capacity pump will run through your water faster. That might not be an issue for you, depending on how you plan to use it. I built something almost like this, but instead of needing a power source for an electrical pump, I used a bicycle pump to pressurize the jerry can. Works great if two people are there, so one can pump when pressure gets low, or for a quick rinse. I found that with a good pressurization, you can get about two minutes of decent pressure from a can 2/3 full. I found a full can doesn't allow for ample air to be pressurized with just a hand pump. I would also point out I used a metal jerry can. Plastic should work, but you'd want one that is thick, or reinforced to take the pressuring over and over. I'm going to add your idea with a power pump and keep mine as a backup. I'm not lazy, but I like to work smarter, not harder if I can. The added pump won't add much weight/space anyway.

Nice. If you use a quick disconnect to match the one on the Can to connect the hose to the nozzle, when stored, you can connect the hos to itself, an davoid spils and drips potentially damaging your battery and other electrical components. A remote switch between the battery and pump would make it so you don;t have to dig for the battery to turn the system on. Use a black jerry can (or paint yours) for some solar heartng. I built something similar about 40 years ago. It used a 24V bilge pump from a military vehicle (Army), and wired it into a standard trailer pigtail for power. We had gasoline fired immersion heaters that dropped into a garbage can or 55gal drum, and this lashup dropped in, and let us have hot showers while in the field. Everybody made fun of it when I was putting it together. The laughter stopped after the first hot bath they had had in a couple of weeks. The deal was, you show up with 5 gallons of water, you get 5 gallons of shower.

I notice that there's the possibility of accidentally hitting the power switch on the battery when loading the bag and hose into the bag. If you're not attentive, you might end up with a dead power pack that's drained past the ability to recharge. Aside from that, this build looks great!

Couple thoughts, it would be nice to have a manual back-up system, some kind of manual pump. I hate electric systems that don't have manual back-ups. Might consider painting the tank black to make it a nice little hot water passive Solar system.

Nice job and clean build. Maybe run the wire and power source into the small pocket to separate it from the hose since it'll be wet after use. Too bad you couldn't find a male hose mending kit, but it could be a positive - You can fill the can through the pump by hooking up the hose to a faucet. No need to unscrew the lid or use another hose.

Thank you! I was able to find it online and swapped it out. That is a good idea. Hadn't thought of using it to fill the can. The bag does have a little separator so that they aren't in the same spot but its not waterproof so I put the battery in a small Ziploc so it doesn't get wet.

Beautiful build! I don't know enough about portable showers to answer my own question, so I'm asking you. Would it be worth the effort to paint the jerry can black in order that you could put it in the sunlight to warm for a while before use? Would it be worth the effort to get some insulating foam for the side you intend to face away from the sun to help keep the heat from dissipating? TBH, I'm imagining painting one of the large sides of the can black, and building a little frame out of insulating foam panels joined either by tape or webbing around the other three sides. Pull the can out, fill it, put the insulating frame on while aiming the black side at the sun. When it's warm enough, add one additional panel to trap the heat on the black side and have a nice shower that's warm all the way through.

Oh, I like where this is going... you could make your own container out of XPS on 5 sides, paint the inside black, make the 6th side clear, and add another piece of XPS on a hinge that could close over the clear side. Then open the hinged side so that the sun comes in through the clear side, and heats the black interior. Then when ready to use, close the hinged side, and the insulation on all six sides keeps the heat in.

Just a word of warning, most of these jerry cans are two halves electronically welded - melted at the seam to create a single unit. Constant flexing under varying pressures of inflating the can will eventually cause seam failure, and the contents will spill out. Unless the can was designed to handle constant varying pressures, I'd be careful. Most pressurized containers are cylinder shaped or round for a reason.

Yes for any of those that want to put a pump sprayer in one of these yes you are right. Not meant to be pressurize. What I did in this video doesn’t pressurize anything but the hose.
