This turned out beautifully! You have inspired me. If you want to get a tighter fit, start by stapling in the middle of one side, then put a staple in the middle of the opposite side. Then work your way out to the corners. When those two sides are done, repeat for the two remaining opposite sides. :)

Really nice!!! Another way to help canvas tighten that has worked for me when my canvas has dents is to spray a bit of water on the back of it and when it dries it tends to shrink a bit. 🥰

Using drop cloth canvas, great idea for an inexpensive project. Although it would be an added expense, if you do more of these, you might try experimenting with using (Acrylic) Gesso for your first layer. It will help stiffen up the canvas and provide a good backing for your paint. Nice job. 👌

I would have placed the frame closer to the corner to only cut two sides of the drop cloth and save way more cloth, for more projects :) Also with less excess cloth but just enough I think it would have been easier to stretch it out and make it tighter. I’d add 1 or 2 more wood pieces crossing the middle of the frame as well. Gesso-ing it first is a great idea! Thanks for the video and beautiful inspiration! Plan on finally getting a miter saw and start making my own!

Try stapling in a north, south, east, west pattern to avoid sagging. Walk around and place one staple on each side at a time. When complete, smooth a glass of water over the canvas to shrink it and make it drum tight.
@ErinSpainDIY
@ErinSpainDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I’ve started stapling that way for the projects I’ve done since this one but I haven’t tried the water to shrink it. Interesting, I’ll give it a try!

Looks great. I'm just curious why you would not just use regular art canvas? Was it because you were just trying to use what you had around the house? Very resourceful!

What kind of finish did the paint have? Does it matter? Eggshell, semigloss, etc.?
@ErinSpainDIY
@ErinSpainDIY 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t really matter, just depends on how much sheen you want it to have. I used a mix of eggshell and satin since it’s what I had on hand. I didn’t want it to be super glossy so I usually stay away from high gloss, but some people want that aesthetic. Just personal preference.

There are some professional artists advising on how to stretch canvas on a stretcher (frame) here on KZbin, will solve those annoying wrinkle issues
@ErinSpainDIY
@ErinSpainDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I’ve also found (after making this video) that stretching from the middle first on each side and then doing corners has helped.

Great job but a lot of waste! Why didn't you lay out the canvas at one end and measure from there?
@ErinSpainDIY
@ErinSpainDIY 3 жыл бұрын
That would’ve made a difference of an approximately 3 inch strip of cloth, which you could do. I just wanted to make sure I had more than enough excess around the edge. Ultimately it didn’t create enough waste for it to make a difference shifting it over 3-4 inches or so.
