Here's an easy do it yourself amplifier for your atomic or radio controlled watches that increases their ability to successfully receive the time signal.
If, like me, you live at the edge of the range of the atomic towers or have problems getting a successful sync, this video might help you.
I tested it with my G-Shock watches but it works for Citizen, Seiko or any other atomic watch.

I live in Brisbane as well and I set my atomic watches permanently to Tokyo DST time. Since neither Japan nor Queensland use DST this has the effect of adding 1 hour to Tokyo time (normally UTC+9) resulting in the UTC+10 that we use :) The only issue is the watch displays the small 'DST' symbol but I can ignore it.

You, sir, deserve a Nobel Prize, as far as I am concerned 👍 👌 🏆 I just managed to sync my Casio M710 multiband 6, that has not synced for months. I'm in Europe, at the edge of the German tower and generally only go to sync my watch when we change to and from the summer light-saving time. I go to a park above my town to two specific alleys and only there I can sometimes get coverage. There I spend an hour or two sitting on different benches and triggering the syncing with varying success rate, until it syncs, sometime it works in one place, 6 months later it doesn't work, but works 50 meters down the alley. Now I just put the watch around a metal deodorant spray can, put the can horizontally on a table by the window at home and it synced straight away at home. I've never managed to sync the watch at home before 👌

It works! I have three G-shocks and a Casio Pathfinder all of which synch with the atomic clock sporadically at best. The Pathfinder hadn’t synced properly since November of last year. Hung all 4 on the metal towel towel rack in my bathroom and for the first time ever, all 4 watches had synced perfectly. Good find, sir!

I did some research on this and found the antenna inside the multiband 6 Gshock watches is a ferrite rod antenna which runs across the watch from the 9 to 3 o’clock position. It can be quite directional in terms of signal reception, which is why Casio provides specific instructions on how to align your watch at night. If you don’t have a metal rod or want to try on it’s own, at night set your watch near a window and align the 12 o’clock side to the direction of the nearest multiband 6 station tower to you. I think the reason why Casio says this in the instructions is because this aligns the antenna at 90 degrees to the incoming signal which I believe is the best position for reception without any other aides. Therefore, I think the best possible signal reception would be with the metal rod in the same position. Try it out and let me know your findings!

Your method worked for my 5600 Bluetooth! I used my wife's old golf club, a long old wooden headed driver and placed it horizontal. I was only getting level one without, and tried it at 5pm and to my amazement it connected level 2 and 3 bouncing back and forth. Wow how amazing. At night it locked at level 3. I am in NE Minnesota and the Atomic is in Colorado. Thanks, much!

I use gw7900. I live in Indonesia so far away from japan and we know with my time zone (BKK) is not possible to activate my atomic timekeeping sync. So before I sleep, I set my watch home city to Tokyo (TYO) which is 2 hours ahead from my local time, then I set receiving radio signal to On/auto receiving and I hanged my watch on steel rod of my windows in my bed room. When i wake up in the morning and check my watch, Its incredible!, The sync indicator is appeared!! Its SUCCESSFULLY SYNC at 02:03 Tokyo Time!!. After that I set my time zone to BKK again to get my local time. Your method very useful. Thanks!!

Finally! Signal Received! My Casio GWM5610U came yesterday July 22, 2022. I ordered from Amazon and I was very exited to test the multiband 6 function. After manually attempting to get the signal, I kept getting the error message. I found a video about amplifying the signal by placing the watch on a bicycle or metal large frame and got some L1 and L2 signal and after a few minutes the error message again. I then tried positioning it facing northwest by a window (facing Fort Collins, Colorado where the signal comes from) and I was able to reach L3 temporarily but then error again. It was very late, so I tried wearing it overnight to see if my body would amplify the signal and automatically eventually sync (following advice from another KZbin video) but that didn’t work either. Success came when I stepped outside this morning and sat my watch on a beach Tommy Bahama foldable chair, the watch facing northwest. The watch displayed connectivity with L2 and L3 switching back and forth and after about 4 minutes it finally happened!It felt magical and I’m not sure if I’m going crazy due to the lack of sleep. I hope this helps someone out there.

This is crazy, I actually put 4 of my atomic watches and clocks on a metal cabinet and get 100% sync rate. But when I put them in the windowsill (plastic/wood) which is actually CLOSER to the window, literally, the success rate drops to maybe 50%. I never put two and two together. Great video. Metal works.

At first I was skeptical that this could work, but as a ham radio operator, I figured that there must be an inductive coupling between the metal frame of the bike and the watch antenna. Whatever it is, I tried several times without using your technique and could not get the watch to synch. Then, but just attaching it to my camera tripod it synched up the on the first try. Great observation on your part!

I got a used G-Shock for a really good price, and couldn't get it to sync up at all for several days after I bought it. I thought that something was wrong with it as I tried everything from leaving it by a window overnight, to trying several apps and nothing worked until I saw your video and tried it on a friend's bike as I don't have one & it worked right away on the first attempt just after midnight! Awesome discovery! A GW-7900 is on its way to me from Amazon and I am looking forward to experimenting with your metal tube/pipe method of enhancing signal reception. Thanks a million for sharing your knowledge and wisdom. P.S.: Last night, I hung my brand new GW-7900 onto the end of my cloth-hanging rod in my closet and see if my G-Shock could pull in the atomic radio signals from the Fort Collins facility in Colorado which is over 2200 km (that's over 1360 miles) away from my location. This morning, sure enough, the watch shows that the synchronization was completed at "00:04", i.e. at midnight. Needless to say that I was pleasantly surprised and impressed at how well the suggested method as described in your video had worked. I surely hope that the Fort Collins Atomic Clock will continue to send out signals for many years to come.

I too accidentally discovered this with a round steel lid (about 4.5 inches or 11.5cm diameter) on top of a glass jar containing cotton balls and Q-Tips. I had a lot of trouble picking up WWVB here in Atlanta, Georgia from putting the watch in my window sill and one night I had placed it on top of the cotton ball dispenser's metal lid while getting ready to go to bed. I forgot to move it to the window that night and the next morning it had picked up time code signal perfectly! So for ten nights now I have had 100% success with the metal lid. Now the lid does have a small metal ball in the middle for lifting it up and maybe that also helped. Will have to do some experiments using other metal objects with copper or steel.

It's not an amplifier so much as a better antenna coupling to the tiny internal antenna. The internal antennas are coils of wire wound on tiny ferrite bars. The appropriate antenna for the 60 kHz WWVB signal is a wire dipole antenna that is over a mile and a half long. The best practical indoor antenna is a loop of wire about 3 feet across with a capacitor wired in a gap in the loop that will resonate the loop at 60 kHz. (Do a web search for small mag loop antenna.) Then just set the watch beside it and it will lock easily, even much easier than using a pipe as an antenna. Basically, a larger antenna is a better antenna, and 2 antennas tuned to the same frequency couple to each other and share the strength of the signal received by the larger one with the smaller one. So get them close together and you're in business. I built a WWVB loop antenna in MI that was 3 feet in diameter (and in my basement) that received the WWVB signal in Colorado so clearly that I could display it as a sine wave on my oscilloscope.

I have a Casio model GW-S5600-1JF. I live in West Palm Beach County, Florida, so I am on the fringe area from Fort Collins. I tried many nights to synchronize manually to no avail. Yesterday at 11 PM I tried to synchronize manually using my bike as described and it worked. Today it synchronized automatically at 12:05 AM (first attempt).

I was watching your tutorial about the 3495 and you mentioned the « amplifier « video. I live in Ottawa Ontario, far away from Fort Collins. I have an atomic desk clock which sometimes syncs when placed on a shelf in front of a south facing window on the second. However, the G-Shock never synced on that shelf. After watching your video, I tied the watch on my desk lamp and the next morning, it was synced. Thanks for the tip!

Amazing tip! I live outside the German tower range and I don't get a signal. I wrapped my 5610 around the sink faucet and it managed to sync after a few minutes. It only did this successfully at night time - when I tried it during the day it reaches L3 but synching was unsuccessful. So if you can't sync during the day, try again at night when the atomic signal is stronger.

Ty for this! I just got a G Shock GWM-5610 today and it wasn't syncing for me. I just put it on my aluminum baseball bat and it worked like a charm. Tested it out twice and it worked both times flawlessly, only took 3 minutes each time to sync.

I live in Connecticut USA and I too was having problems my Casio 5610 not connecting to the signal. Since I am a cyclist, I hung my watch from my bike and said, "what the hell, I will try anything at this point" . To my amazement, it actually worked! WTH!!!!!!! Anyway, thank you very much.

Yup that works!! Thank you so much for the tip. I’m in Toronto and I live in a high rise apartment, which is facing opposite direction from Colorado tower. I wasn’t having successful sync but when I tried just putting my 5610 on a metal Deodorant bottle and executed manual sync at midnight time… in 4 min I got RCVD 📶 Advise: Those who don’t have a metal rode or a bike, no need to spend money on them. First try by already available metal objects in your house 🤘🏻

WOW THIS REALLY WORKS! I live in a condo on the lower floor. I never got an over-the-air signal, I thought because my unit is in the north east corner of the building and Fort Collins CO is to the south west of my home in Canada, near the edge of the broadcast area. I bought a metal pull-up frame from the thrift store and hung it over the door frame. I have 5 Casio Multibands and they all sync after the first night!!

I tried hanging my atomic watch on my bike frame, pull up bar the reception level goes back and forth between level L2 & L3 but still unable connect. Does the reception level have to stay steady at a level in order for it to have a solid connection???

Ingenious find! I'm located in south Germany and always wondered why my atomic G-Shocks always synced at 3:02 AM Central European Summer Time or 2:02 AM during standard time CET. I guess it's 2 minutes past midnight UTC-2 (Greenland?) when the sync signal is sent.
@RockyBoltzano
@RockyBoltzano 5 жыл бұрын
The signal is sent continuously 24 hours per day by the tower in Mainflingen. Your watch is programmed to try syncing at certain hours during the morning (e.g. 2am, 3am, etc. see your user's manual to find out what are the exact hours) because that's when there's less radio interference. It takes about 2 minutes to finish the sync if reception is good, that's where the 2 minutes come from. You can also try to manually start the syncing (see your manual how to do it) and you'll see that it'll probably work anytime after dark too.

I’ve had a left over 4 foot length of 1:2 inch copper pipe sitting in my living room for years. I’ve been trying to think of how to make use of it and not dismiss it to the recycler. Sure enough, your discovery works. The old pipe now sits happy in plain view not far from the TV. A couple of new black and red clamps hold it horizontally on a book-shelve with plenty of room on one end to easily slide watch on.. It works every time even though its not near a window. The watch never syncs in that spot without the pipe. BTW, I live in a metal frame New York apartment building. THANKS!!

Thanks! Going to try this. I live in north Texas and my Casio G-Shock has no problems syncing. I just bought a cheap Casio Waveceptor from Amazon and it won’t sync at all. I don’t want to use the the Chinese based apps, so this is a really appealing approach. I’m amazed that Casio’s technology has such varying success rates - I thought that if one worked without any “assistance”, they all would work without extra help. Guess not.
