I own the 5610 and later bought the 5000 thinking I would upgrade and replace my 5610. WRONG. I sent the 5000 back. This was one of my most overblown purchases ever. The only true “upgrade” for me was the screw back itself (could care less about the steel casing because the plastic version can withstand an F-250 running over it, and you never see it anyway, so it felt moot). Regardless though, both case and screw back in no way justifies the 5000’s cost in my opinion. The 5000’s buttons are a headache to push, utilizing a stiffer spring. And the thinner, supposedly more premium band was, well...."meh". I'll never really miss it. Another thing that I haven’t seen mentioned In ANY G-Shock square reviews, is that there are actually 3 different sized buckles for the square models. The smallest is on the standard 5600 models (not sure about the Bluetooth models), the medium sized buckle is on this GW-5000 model, and even though the 5610 is the smallest of all the squares (but still slightly wider than both the other models), it ironically has the largest buckle of all the squares. So you’re actually getting a smaller buckle on the 5000 vs the 5610. Not by much, but nonetheless, smaller. Though a good watch and made of better quality, the GW-5000 is truly for the collector only. If you’re thinking of “upgrading” from the 5610, I’d be hard pressed to believe that you’d be happy dropping the 300 bucks for this thing when comparing the two watches side by side. And you're STILL getting a deeper recessed glass on the 5610! I had major buyer’s remorse…but that’s just me…you may still like the 5000 better. Just my two cents.

I have both and I can't get rid of any. BUT you're right. Buttons are the worst part. They should be bigger or at least as easy to push as the ones in the 5610

I like the fact the 5610 is a bit lighter and thinner. Some say the weight of the 5000 makes it feel more premium but I love how light and thin my dw5600 is. My upgrade will be the 5610U.

I love the color on my 5610. The pop of red, blue, and gold really set off the black square perfectly for me. I recently upgraded from a 15 year old 5600J, which has a similar color to the 5000. Great watch, but the muted color always bugged me a little bit. A 5000 in the 5610's colorway would be just perfect. 😂👌

I have the GW-5000 and the GWM5610 both have the 3159 module, I don't have the "U" series - module 3495 that came later. I have a bunch of Casio square watches including : Bluetooth , 25th , 30th , 35th and 40th anniversary versions as well as some classic screwbacks from the 80's and 90's with the 691 and 901 modules. All together I own around 30 Casio square watches.

Oh yes the EL backlight does look more retro, but I think the new LED should be durable over time. No better or worse here.

As a watch collector with half of my collection consisting of G-shocks, I find this watch interesting. But I find where a watch is made being least important. The screwback case definitely makes it look more premium, even if it is not visible when the watch is on the wrist. And the more comfortable strap is an advantage. But I thought you would mention the better readability of 5000 screen. I have never seen a 5000 IRL but I have read several other reviewers mentioning this. So if the screen is better and the watch is more comfortable on the wrist I consider to get one. And: I agree with many other about that the 5000 version could could have more colors.

I just got a 5610u but I have a question because I am very new to owning a high end square... how do I go about finding a band that is more comfortable to wear all day? I am a manufacturing technician that works hard labor and I have to wear gloves for 12 hours straight every single day. I have heard people talk about some kind of "combi" bracelet? I am not sure what that means, but I am needing something that is very comfortable. Can any of you fine gentlemen give me some advice? Also, when replacing the band, do u have to have proprietary tools to do so? I ask because I haven't a clue on how to even take the band off to begin with. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated!

Hello Brendon, I’d think the stock band fits your purpose best. Just leave it on and you’re good. The combi bracelet I mentioned is a bracelet made mainly from plastic. Very light and doesn’t show any strap “tail”. But I think this isn’t as tough as the good old stock strap you have on the 5610.

@@alexcojocaru2547 I appreciate it. I ended up doing a little more research and learned how to do it. I got a good deal on an authentic 5000u band and installed it. I didn't think it would make a difference since they are identical in size, color, etc. But it is unbelievably comfortable! It also stays in place better than the stock 5610u band, so I'm happy. The NATO band u speak of... what exactly are they? I wanted to check them out. Do I just Google "NATO band for 5600 series"? Also, what name brands do you recommend? Thanks

@@brandonb2418hey so the best part of the gw5610 is not only the durability but the fact you can mod it. You can’t replace the whole “shell” get new strap and everything they even have bars to put at the front of the watch. A lot of the stuff that you’d wanna look for is either on Amazon or ali express. Let me know if you need more help. There is also videos on how to mod the watch and where to buy the parts.

The thicker GW5000 wears a bit taller due to the caseback. Very very slight difference.

After buying both, I can say that I prefer the 5000 for 3 reasons. The biggest is the strap. The second is it feels more “substantial” because of the extra weight. And the face is symmetrical. Is it worth it spending double just for those things? For me it is, but I think most people will be completely happy with a 5610.

I own the 5600 and the 5000. It’s hard to say whether the premium “feel” of the 5000 is worth double the price of the 5610. I like it mostly because it is unique. I prefer the module in the 5000 for my international travels, but the 5600 is good for beating on around the barn and garage.

The 5610u is the better option unless you want the "JDM" version. Paying almost double for slight changes is ridiculous. At that point just get a full metal version.

justmeeagainn, you spend your money however you want too. Yes, this watch does have a screw down stainless steel case back but the build quality is definitely more premium because the inner case is metal(stainless steel)and not plastic like the other. However, it is a matter of choice. Also, please be mindful that this is a "tough solar" watch, so the chances of you having to open up the screw down case back anytime in the next 10 to 15 years is most unlikely as long as there is sun or any other source of light present to charge the battery. Don't forget the multiband6 feature so you won't ever need to even adjust the time as long as you live in a part of the world in line with an atomic clock radio signal. I collect gshocks and already own the cheaper one but the GW-5000U is the way!

5000 has not only screwed ss back, its inner case made fully from ss, 56`s inner case is plastic with ss back with 4 screws. What`s your opinion on display viewing angles in 5000 and 56?

I like the color style of the GW5000 more, but not so much that I'd spend $300 over it over the 5610U. The other reasons, while nice, don't sway me. The Thailand screw-down 5610u is still guaranteed to be durable, and ordinary Casios have been high-quality no matter where they're assembled, for decades. If money were no object for me, maybe I'd buy the 5000, but 5610 is still the champ when practicality is taken into consideration. The GW5000u still looks incredible though.

The biggest difference you didn’t mention is the 56xx(today) is a resin case and the 50xx is a steel case , basically one gshock is made of plastic for the most part and the other one of steel that’s the difference in price right there … I have no problem with resin case but that’s the difference… I been collecting g shock for many years and I have over 30Gs

If you are a modder and use a transparent or translucent case/strap - the 5000 looks much better, the 5000 is a steel case though both are wrapped in polymer, The 5610 is a polymer case other than the back plate. I cant decide, just have to get both. But then they are so much alike,...I know, I will wait for the MIP display version.

i definitely prefer the 5000U over the 5100 because of the premium material, the workmanship, the lack of the gaudy red frame. the $160 difference in price amortized over 365 days is < $.5/day, and is insignificant.

@@AndyinSG Hello Andy! I really enjoyed this video and the other about these two watches. I have a very extensive gshock collection as of now. In 2020 I purchased the GW-M5610. Then in 2021 the updated version was released but I didn't want to upgrade this watch to the U version(because I love the EL backlight still) but still wanted the benefits of the newer features of the updated U module. Therefore, I decided to purchase the "tough solar" only G-5600UE. However, I always wanted a more premium square with screw down case back and found the GW-5000U to be the cheapest of all such squares. I recently made this purchase and waiting on it to arrive directly from Japan. This will make a total of 9 squares in my collection, 4 of which are: 1tough solar, 1tough solar/multiband6/bluetooth, and 2 tough solar/multiband6. I'm done buying watches for a good while now unless I'm selling something that I have to replace it with something else. 👍🏿

It is not the screw case back, the entire core of the 5000 is made of steel as the original G-shock from the 80s. The other g-shocks have plastic core because of the cost!!!

The 5610 doesn’t fit so well on wider wrists is my experience, I can say that I love the look of the 5610 but it dont fit so well on my 8’ wrist as the GW5000. But the DW5600 does. And the G-5600. So I decided at last to go for the GW5000. I love the build quality in stainless steel, the lugs will not be damaged so easy as resin, the same with the back cover. But the 5610 is a good bang for bucks. I like the classic monochrome look, but I should like to see different colors too.

If they both had the enhanced thicker digits of the newer screens, it would make all the difference. As they are both multiband atomic although a screw back might be preferable in some eyes, it does not reall6 matter as after 15 years or so, one can throw it away and buy another? !

Most important: Are the insides the same? I had a 5610 for 5 years of hard use. The band broke which was replacable. I finally threw it in the trash when the solar batery would not hold a charge for more than a couple of hours. Have you ever priced a battery replacement. Might as well buy a brand new watch!

I.prefer the red one so I swap the strap from thailand to made in japan is softer more comfortable than made and you can put titanium blackplate - not screw down,and metal watch case, still light -becouse blackplate is note steel,

Nobody mention that gw5000u is aprox. 2 mm bigger (in all ways) than gwm5610u. And heavyer too. And little big expencive! Casio selling same design and technology last 35 years. I have dw5600 and gwm5610u. And know what?! I pay extra for gw5610u because he has tough solar (make me nervous on medium and low during long sleeves season) and multiband (recive signal only if you leave it on special place in house, near window itd.). I love Casio G shock sqares but DW5600 is enough to have in collection.

The humble DW-5600 is a good watch too. No frills, always reliable, many different colourways. I’d say all the square models are legends on their own right.

What’s the difference between 5610-1 and 5610-u?

The U suffix denotes a newer module. Has some new features like LED backlight and date display option etc. Works better for me as I prefer to my date in dd-mm format.

You only talk about the caseback on the GW-5000, while the big difference is the full stainless steel case, vs the resin case on the 5610. This makes the GW-5000 a lot stronger, especially where the band connects to the case.

gw-5610U definitely, the backplate is not the real reason, and it is lighter which is much much bigger reason at the end of the day. The strap, once you put it on your arm, you can't feel the difference....

Just the fact the GW5000U has a proper screw down case back is a reason enough for me to choose it regardless being more extensive. Although the case back with the 4 screws in the GMW is a cut above the regular G Shocks, it's still not as water resistant. I've seen some old well used G schocks that were water damaged cause the think rubber seal didn't keep the water out after years of use With the screw down case back you can actually surf, dive, swim with it without worry, which for me is a must since I'm in the water all the time

I think the Frogman is definitely the best Master of G digital watch, as it's far better built than the Rangeman and has less reported issues online. However, for the regular G-Shocks, I think these two are definitely the best. I'm still deciding between the two, but it all depends on how I find the overall build quality of the GW-M5610U, in terms of the resin case, strap, buckle, and the buttons.

It felt too cheap, didn't really feel that much different from a basic £10 Casio watch that I got 10+ years ago, despite being 10 times more expensive. I held off getting the GW-5000U, as I decided to get the GBD-H2000 instead, but now I'm considering sending it back and getting the former.

All the comments remarking about the 5610 being better do not own a 5000. Own both then say which is nicer, there is a significant difference. The 5000 never needs to be adjusted to time as it receives multiband signals each night. The 5000 will always be accurate to the millisecond. The 5000 will change minute at the exact time as your phone, always. It is the most no-fuss watch in existence.

The 5000 is definitely the more “premium” one. No arguments on that. I’m lucky to have both, and loving both. They’re staying put in the collection for sure.
