I know this video isn’t about goldfish but I just found your channel and didn’t realize people love their goldfish as much as I do! About 4 years ago I got two 10 cent feeder fish and had them in a 20 gal and didn’t know much about fish. They were about half and inch and since then one is about 5in and the other is about 3.5 and they’re doing swimmingly in an 110 gal! I love them so much and with proper care I didn’t realize how long they can live. People are so uneducated about fish but they really are amazing and make me so happy :)

You are an inspiration. I saw the goldfish tour you gave The DIY King and saw your Butterfly Betta and had to have one. Now that I want more, these divider are great to know about. A little story...when I was 10, about 57 yrs ago I had a collection of Bettas. I even had some breed but small enough food was a problem and the fry didn't make it. The cool thing back then was the Bettas were 3 times the size you buy these days many were 4 inches long and they went for $.59 a piece. Boy the times have changed since then.

When I made mine I used heavy duty plastic canvas that did not need the binder edging because it was rigid enough on its own. I also used suction cups they sell for hanging Christmas lights in windows. They have channels in them that are meant to hold the lights, but they will hold the plastic canvas perfectly! I like the finished look the binder edging gives, but it's not necessary if you can find the heavy plastic canvas.

Just used this to seperate 2 goldfish in my tank. One was not adjusting to his new tank mate. I used Black 7 mesh Plastic Canvas from Michael’s. Suction cups also from Michael’s, got report covers from Office Depot( probably cheaper elsewhere but it was in the same plaza). Slight trimming needed for a 20 L tank. As they grow I’ll need a bigger tank but for now they are both alive and happy. Thanks for the video!

I highly highly encourage you to do more research on divided betta tanks. For one thing, the fish will be stressed if they are able to see each other through the divider, and females should not be kept in the same water as a male because they can become egg bound if a male is nearby but they are unable to mate. Since you have a 5 gallon tank that you were using before, I suggest you keep the female in that and keep the males in the divided 10 gallon. I realize this might not fit your ideal aesthetic for the tanks, but it will be much better for your fish and I know you care about that.

I'm a fish behaviour researcher, there's some recent evidence that having the opportunity to display "aggressive" behaviours can be very rewarding for certain fish species and something that they're highly motivated to do. It's entirely possible that preventing them from ever expressing this highly motivated natural behaviour could be more detrimental to their welfare than allowing it.

With my bettas, I have a little paper cutout in the shape of another fish that I exercise my fish with by letting them do their territorial behaviors. My arguement in my original comment was that it isnt good for them to feel that stress constantly. Having another betta visible to them all the time by having a see-through divider makes them feel like their territory is constantly being threatened.

There's also the risk of the stress making their immune systems weaker. I had a divided 10 gal once, and the one make eventually started to decline in health. Rotting fins and lethargy, plus a hard time swimming. Eventually I had to feed him by hand because he couldn't get it on his own. I tried extra water changes and different medications, but nothing helped. I moved him into his own 5.5, and he almost immediately started to get better. He just couldn't handle a shared space, even when he couldn't see his neighbour. I haven't risked a divided rank since. I do have a sorority, but I keep a very close eye on it, plus big water changes and a ton of plants

Egg bound is not caused by males. Egg bound females will always be egg bound, wether she is by herself, or in sorority, or in split tank with the male. Normal females will always be producing eggs, release them (and eat them) or absorb the eggs inside her body. I keep seeing people all over the internet talking about male hormones causing egg bound but in fact, there is never scientific research backing that up. All the experienced keepers/breeders I know have never experienced this behavior. So please help stop the rumors.

You can use filter mats as dividers, and use them as a matten-filter. Just pump the water from one side of the tank to the opposite side. The water will flow back through the filter mats, and the water is filtered. There will be no need to clean the mats for a year or more.

Genius. I was thinking about buying one at the pet store because the female betta is trying to mate and the male I have is hiding out trying to get away and maybe I should create a barrier for his wellbeing. Thank you for this, genius creation, ill try your suggestion

Thanks Jenny for saving me $20 - never bought those but they just look like junk even in the photo :D I need to keep my mystery snails off aquatic grass I am starting - first time i seeded the grass it got completely munched down - they even ate the soil and roots. I am aware you had some life style changes but your videos will still be helpful and awesome for aquarium nerds! Cheers!

I just brought home my first goldfish. While at work I saw a little one eyed feeder fish, so I brought him home and named him Popeye. Because he only has one eye he swims kinda funny, but other than that he’s actually a really pretty fish. I can’t wait to see how he grows!

you can buy a box of just the binders without the covers online. i think i got a box of 30 (not for this but its a great idea, i wish we could get basic tanks like that here in the uk, theyre all kits with crap filters etc in that cost a fortune)
