Good to see you getting some use from the biogravel and the method shown proves that filters don't need to be complicated to be effective, they don't have to be expensive either. Groovy.

Thank you Richard for sending such a great filter media especially so much, in my canister filters I also have your biohome that I have previously bought from you which is great stuff.

This is too funny. I was literally making one of these today for a new tank. After watching your video I am going to modify mine thanks to a good idea from you. I was going to leave just filter floss at the top. Putting the media on top of the floss too is a good idea to help it seal and keep the floss from shifting and leaving an opening. Thanks for the idea!

I don't know if you see comments from older videos, but if you do, thank you for saving me some money. I have everything I need to do this! I'm new to the hobby, and what was going to be one planted tank with a few fish for my macaw to enjoy watching (he does), became two tanks very quickly. I'm setting up a third for shrimp, because somehow I cannot now live without shrimp. Your advice is very much appreciated.

I have made this too a while back, but I just stuck the pat mini powerhead on the end of the tube instead of putting an airstone in it, since I don't have an air pump. Works great and saved me a ton of money on a canister filter, lily pipes and all that stuff.

Hey Mark! I made one of these today, roughly the same style but a couple different layers, it's thick and fairly big but got a 10 gallon air pump for it. It's in a 5 gallon grow out tank I just set up for my new Mystery snail clutch that magically showed up in my tank! My question is, how do I know it's working? Secondly, the media at the bottom is a combination of lava rocks and some ceramic noodles, there IS air gappage in and amongst them, will this affect the suck? If I put my hand over the top to see if I can feel water being pulled up I get the feeling I'm mostly feeling the air stone bubbles LOL! Thanks again for all your help!
@MarksShrimpTanks5 жыл бұрын
water will be getting pulled through it all, the air gap will disappear over time and a good way to see that it is actually working is the white floss layer will get pretty dirty :)

Hello Lee, this is as old an old school type filter as you can get and thats probably why its lasted so long, its simple, easy to make and works really well , I personally know a fish breeder thats used only these in his room, also on this video there is a link to a BBC short video about Nuns who also used this filter, if you watch that it will make your mind up for you I think.

So...am I understanding correctly that the air stone bubbles that are rising cause the water to pull into the filter from going into the sides that are exposed, draw down to the bottom through the media and floss and then come up the pipe with the air bubbles as clean water? Am I getting that right? lol

Please correct me if I am wrong, but these type of bottles are made out of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). PET and PETA are singe use plastics, and these can leach chemicals more readily over time than any other plastic. So I would be cautious when using these types of plastic.
@MarksShrimpTanks5 жыл бұрын
Yeah over time like thousands of years. dont worry about it.
@MarksShrimpTanks5 жыл бұрын
oh and if they seriously leeched I doubt thy would be use for human drinking containers, what you have to watch for is colored plastics that are not coated.
@bhillson5 жыл бұрын
@@MarksShrimpTanks I found this: www.3reef.com/threads/reef-safe-plastics-leaching-myths-facts.57828/ There is also a article Antimony leaching from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic used for bottled drinking water by (Paul Westerhoff Panjai Prapaipong Everett Shock Alice Hillaireaud). www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0043135407005246 (depends if you have access via a uni or teaching access to read the full document), Im studying nursing so have access to read and found the information useful. The out comes show that it can leech slowly over time, but heat can cause increased leaching of antimony from plastics, another thing to consider is Sunlight as exposure to sunlight on antimony release from PET plastic bottles into water. With shrimp tanks high temps will be ok but if the tank is exposed to sunlight then there could be a issue. If anything these are good articles to read, and also shows how dangerous it can be to leave these single use drinking bottles out in heat for too long as it can be hazardous to human health.
@MarksShrimpTanks5 жыл бұрын
So there is no risk in a shrimp tank and there will be no issue with a bottle in a tank in sunlight, you are talking extreme heat conditions something we will never see in a shrimp tank, just a FYI I worked as a plastics exstruder for 5 years making everything from medical equipment to gutters. You are probably at a higher risk from bacteria infections from plastic bottles in heat compared to shrimp being affected by leeching.
