I came up with an idea. making this feeder, I realized that the feed in the center of the barrel was somewhat out of reach. I took an old funnel and bolted it to the bottom center and it forces the feed toward the eating shoots.

I guess there isn’t a way to keep critters from crawling in where the chickens heads go in because no one has posted an answer to that often asked question. Maybe rat wire attached at the other end of the pipe would have large enough holes that allow feed to come through but keep critters out. I wish they would let us know because we all know what a rat, mouse, squirrel, or ground squirrel would do. I guess if they are in an enclosure made of rat wire nothing could get into the chicken lot.
@AinsleyVarvel6 ай бұрын
@@Marg205 critters will still get in no matter what. Best thing to do would be to have hanging feeders, but that won't work too well for a trashcan feeder. I'm still trying to think of a good solution. Where I'm at, it's the bugs I'm worried about more than the mice/rats.
@Stonehound503 Жыл бұрын
I absolutely love this there’s something about just the simplicity of it and then never make it out of anything for any amount of birds. I’m on my way home right now to make one out of a 5 gallon bucket for my two girls.! But due to availability I’m using four-inch black flexible drainage hose so I can just screw it in with the threads that are on the pipe😅🤔 also, I never have a problem with anything, but whenever I making something I always put myself in the eyes of the critics, I am by toughest credit, and the only thing that I could see that somebody would say negative about. This is the damn rubber, and then gestation of micro plastics over the years 🤷🏻♂️ I don’t know I don’t care. I’m making one. I’ll send you a picture of it later.!

We do not keep this in our coop (or any food in the coop). This is always kept in our run area and is protected. Our runs (in the barn or in the run of the outdoor coop) are all fenced in and covered. Check a few of our other videos to see the barn set-up and our outdoor coop. I wouldn't leave this outside as squirrels, raccoons, etc. could get into it. We don't have issues with mice or rats but all our feeders are protected inside the run. Hope this makes sense.

Does anyone think, or know, if this is wild duck proof? We have wild ducks that have a tendency to eat almost all the chicken feed unless we find a solution like this.
@TheOldSwedesFarm8 ай бұрын
If the wild ducks can get to this feeder, I would bet they will eat out of it. If the hens can get in it, I would assume a duck could too. I don't know the answer to keeping the ducks away. Sorry!
@Asbosmurf8 ай бұрын
@@TheOldSwedesFarm I was thinking the same as you. I had come to two possible conclusions. 1) Apparently ducks are somewhat clumsier than chickens and therefore if whatever they are fed from is raised up/on a platform, then the ducks would struggle to even get to it. 2) The ends of the 90⁰ bend piping that rests inside the bin could maybe be fitted with some wire mesh. If it is fine enough then it could stop both ducks eating the feed AND most of the rodents getting into. Whilst also still being ok for chickens to peck through. Maybe anyway. Just a couple of thoughts I'd had. By all means let me know what you think.

Any reason why only 4 feeding pipes instead of more?
@TheOldSwedesFarm9 ай бұрын
The garbage can I used is strong plastic. There is a lot of weight inside the feeder, pushing outward. I was thinking about a fifth entrance but I thought it would weaken the plastic. Four is enough for a bunch of hens. They take turns. I have two feeders and that handles a LOT of hens! Hope this makes sense.

Do you have something similer for water?

@@TheAzurTim I do not. I use a different waterer that has a heater in it. You can see the review on our channel. Let me know if you can't see it. Take care!

How does this prevent rodents from getting in also does rain get in?
@TheOldSwedesFarm Жыл бұрын
We have mice around the barn. The holes are high enough (and on 4x4's) so I've never seen a mouse climb in (or out). The hens keep the area clean so there is not much on the ground. I have these inside the barn. I would say to not have any food outside where the elements can get to them. Keep the food in a covered run area (or some covered area). With this, the rain would have to come from an angle to get inside, but it could happen with higher winds.

I did it but they eat and pull the food out🤦♀️
@TheOldSwedesFarm4 ай бұрын
We only had one hen who pulled out food. The others ate it. It was like she was pulling the food as she ate. No other hen ate like that. We have a clean barn. Maybe your hen will change over time or you could raise up the feeder a bit.

Anche il primo che ho fatto io permetteva alle galline di tirare fuori il cibo perché avevo tagliato le curve troppo corte
@TheOldSwedesFarm3 ай бұрын
@@195dm Yes, don't cut the openings too short. Then hens would be able to pull out food. Keep them long and they can't pull out the food. Have a great week!

you mentionned you never saw mices in it, how can you be sure it is roden proof? I like the concept and I just want to be 1000% certain that the design is roden proof.

Any place where mice are, there are droppings. I've never seen a mouse in it, on it, or any droppings on it or near it. I have it set on a 4"x4" base. I think it is too high for mice to get to it. Hope this helps!

how do you keep the rodents out?
@TheOldSwedesFarm18 күн бұрын
Look at our set-up. The part where the hens put their head in is elevated. The unit itself is elevated on 4x4's. I've never seen a mouse or rat go in it (and we've got a camera around the barn). The 90-degree elbows keep the hens from pulling feed out of the feeder. No waste and no rodents. Hope this helps.

Do you ever have any issues with raccoons or other animals getting into it? We have the gravity feeders that we have to close every night because of this.
@TheOldSwedesFarm Жыл бұрын
We have three of these. They are either in the run (shown this video) or in the barn. We have the door to the run (and barn) open all day so the hens can free range. At night we lock up the barn and outdoor run. No animals can get to them at night. Maybe you can find a way to lock them in a caged area at night. Let me know if you have other questions.

I did it with 45's and I cut the top open thinking it would allow the feed better gravity... BIG MISTAKE... it turned out to be 12 HOLES...200 pounds of feed in 3 days! I put it out as scratch grain... but still an EXPENSIVE MISTAKE!

Racoons are smart they'll tip it over, and rats can bite through plastic.
@TheOldSwedesFarm3 ай бұрын
You must have racoons with steroids. Put two bags of feed in this and it weighs almost 100 pounds. It's not getting flipped over. We don't just leave it outside. It's been in our smaller run and now they are in our barn. No coons. We had some rats in our barn and never had one chew a hole in it. Not once. This is a great feeder and very resilient and tough.

Do mice and rats get in?
@TheOldSwedesFarm6 ай бұрын
It is at a height that I don't think they can get in. With the hens around in the coop and barn, I think a mouse would be eaten if it got near the food! This feeder has been an all-around winner for us! Cheers Lorraine!
