DIY Backyard Ice Resurfacer

This video documents the build of a backyard ice rink resurfacer project made with an old garden tractor. This homemade ice resurfacer has a 65 gallon water tank and the resurfacer is made out of PVC pipe.

Growing up, I didn't have access to a rink. Luckily for me, an older fella in town rented out a pavilion at the local park in order to build a rink there every single winter, and that's where I learned to skate. Fast forward to now, some of my fondest memories were made on the ODR. I'll be forever thankful to that man for his generosity and love for the game.

Hey DIY PETE! Love this build...one helpful hint. Drill the holes on the top of the flood pipe. This will allow the flood pipe to fill evenly before coming out onto the spreading towel. This will give you even and consistent water coverage from end to end.

So do i understand you correctly? - the water coming out of the pipe should go into the towel to be spread out onto the ice and not out of the pipe onto the ice and rely on the towel to spread it out?

Randal The Pun Cake hot water freezes slower, so that when it hits the ice it doesn’t freeze in lumps or waves, but settles flat and then freezes. And also fixes any marks from the day by filling them and then freeZing

Man! I made a backyard rink in Fairbanks, Alaska. I didn't need anything but a snow shovel to define the space and a garden hose. I just started making small puddles that turned in to bigger puddles until one day, a rink was born. All I ever did for maintenance was shovel of the snow. Some times I would shovel snow longer than the kids would skate. I never looked at a water bill to figure out how much water was used. The thought of the rink brings back old memories. Your rink could use a Zamboni! Great video. You guys with welders at home are dangerous. If I had a welder back in the day I'd either be dead or divorced now. I kinda really wanted one.

This is awesome!!! My buddy had his backyard leveled out perfectly so he could make a homemade ice rink. He used long industrial roles of rubber and high strength plastic for the walls. He layed down piping under the rubber and some how had it so it would keep the ice cold! we used rubber squeegees with warm towela tied to the rubber as a Zamboni and for that application it was the best!! Became an instant hit of the neighborhood! But then he sold the house and is working on something better for the new place.

Pete Sveen I own a landscaping business so I’m always modifying stuff to be better. I’ve done leaf vacuum mounts for a dump trailer, made a snowblower rack that slides on to the salt spreaders on my plow trucks so we can have a snowblower with us when the trucks have a spreader in them. I’ve done made lawn thatchers/ leaf plows for the front of the lawn mowers, and made a skid steer quick attach style mount for a snowplow for my backhoe. To name a few. I’ve always loved welding and being able to make stuff that you can’t buy or make it better. I actually just did some fab work on one of my snowplows, it’s a few posts back on my Facebook page just search this name and feel free to check it out. I just watched your build of the rink also. You guys put in a ton of work!

You should have used a “ garden tractor” from a similar era. They can be found for similarly inexpensive but were built extremely heavy duty with automotive style rear ends and heavy steel frames. Cool build none the less. For anyone looking for a garden tractor they can be easily differentiated from riding mowers by the 12” rear wheels that bolt up with 5 lugs like a cars wheel. Bolens HT is one of many examples of this kind of machine.

when i was a kid my dad put a ice rink in our backyard, my friends and i used to skate until we couldn't see anymore because of the darkness lol, i would wake up some mornings and there would already be kids in the yard on the rink skating and waiting for me . happy memories.

That’s fantastic. My buddy and I built something similar. We used my tractor with a custom built scraper to smooth the high spots, and his ATV with the tank and water. We quickly realized we needed hot water though. His last name was Budd so we named it the Buddzoni!

hi pete a little trick with your counterweight on the front remove the cinder blocks put another water tank in the box with a 12v pump and run the hose to the rear tank so when you get low on water you can top up with front tank also the benefit is the zamboni isn't front heavy when the rear tank is empty win win in my books cheers from down under

A cool project to heat the water right in the tank would be to weld up a rocket stove. Fill the tank, run a hose to the rocket stove, the water gets heated up and out the pipe at the top that you could just run right back into the tank. Lots of ideas for rocket stoves on KZbin. Great job with the resurfacer!

Nice job! I made one years ago by simply putting a drum on skates and towing it on skates. It had similar spreader bar with towel. I found warm water worked best to melt the bits of snow and hoar frost left over.

Idea, make yourself a Board brush that extends out the driver side of your resurfacer to push in any packed snow up against the boards to the center of your snow collection.

we made our first rink this year. It is not at all nice looking like yours, but is working just fine. Next year will be better as I will level and size the yard specifically for the rink. On three sides I will be putting in a small berm of dirt as it is the edge of the yard. This will leave just one side that will need a barrier installed. We dont have a protection rail on the inside, but we dont play hockey on it. Great looking rink and machine.

I'm from Finland and at our local rink we just use a fire hose with nozzle. If it has snowed a lot we use a tractor to remove the snow, but usually we just use those wide snow plows.

@@DIYPETE First time I've ever been contacted in the comment section of KZbin so I have to admit I was a little caught off guard there. I appreciate that you reach out to your fans like that. It makes it show that you put that much effect into the experience. I do not want to take too much of your time and I definitely do not feel obligated to do a fan requested project because you probably have a lot of other projects. I would feel terrible if you did it solely because a KZbin fan requested it. I made the comment sort of jokingly because I grew up on 20 acres in Tennessee and did put a few holes on our land. Obviously as a 13 year old kid, I never had a putting surface or anything fancy like that but nevertheless it was pretty cool to tell my friends that I had a course in my backyard. Nowadays (as a 27 year old living in Iowa) I spend my time doing little projects like making cribbage boards and cabinets with a couple of woodworking tricks/ideas from your videos so I thank you for that and for educating others. I would suggest one thing though; I believe that flat surface for the ice rink would do perfect as a practice putting green or sort of a mini golf course you could use at night with those permanent lights. Probably wouldn't want to include it in an actual course as you might accidentally break one of the lights.
