Flipping every other board so the growth rings alternated may have reduced the cupping on the counter top. Please provide a 6 and 12 month update on how these counters perform over time especially since they are framing lumber (very soft and prone to dents and wear marks) with a very high moisture content and not properly kiln dried which may lead to expansion and contraction and opening of seams.

Yes I’ll update how it goes. Yes I think you’re right that would’ve helped. I think it was a combination of things like my neighbors tablesaw not being perfectly square and probably what you’re talking about. I was more concerned with turning the nicest side up than I was the grain. For the pantry we weren’t too concerned with some small gaps. It was the look my wife wanted so we decided to try it. Thanks for the input.

Pranut butter will remove glue residue, smooth, not crunchy. ;-) Great job!

Thank you! I was sanding it all so I wasn’t worried about it. I’ve never used peanut butter before. Does it stain at all?

one trick i do with the top ois use pipe clamps top and bottom so i dont get the cupping
@SmartEasyDIYer Жыл бұрын
Yes that would be stronger than mine. I do have pipe clamps now, didn’t then. I hope yours goes well!

Very informative, well put together. just curious the cost difference between a pre-built cabinet versus yours..
@SmartEasyDIYer2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah so I think if i remember correctly the cheapest ones were almost double the price and that was no countertop and no corner cabinets. So the corners were completely unusable.

Thanks. I was going to do part 3 but I just never have had time to put it together. Life happened. Lol. I’m still planning on it sometime here. Thanks
@hongtanke3 жыл бұрын
you need to flip the grain when you glue it like that. you put all the grain the same way to it will all just roll in that direction.
@SmartEasyDIYer3 жыл бұрын
That’s good thinking yes. I just went by which was the best side and required the least amount of sanding. Lol
@hongtanke3 жыл бұрын
@@SmartEasyDIYer in the end it turned out well. But when you glue wood together you need to swap the grain. a good tutorial would be to search youtube on making a butcher block. the same principle's apply. In this case you would only alternate grain. in that case your large table might have helped keep it flatter.

Thanks I appreciate the input. Makes sense

@@hongtanke That's old school thinking. Doesn't matter.

Biscuit joins might have worked better. It would mean less metal in your top and a bit more sanding.
@SmartEasyDIYer3 жыл бұрын
Yes it may have. I considered that but I didn’t want to buy a $200 tool just for that since I have the kregjig already. Thanks for the input
@joyenglish12753 жыл бұрын
@@SmartEasyDIYer you are unable to rent tools there? I know that we can rent them here but not all types or styles.
@SmartEasyDIYer3 жыл бұрын
I haven’t actually checked around locally. I’ll keep that in mind next time. Although If I would do enough with it I would just buy one for future use.

The overall idea is exelentand I like it, but you should rotate the boards as the other comment mentioned. I hope it vont crack. It would be a pitty.

You’re referring to the countertop? It’s done really well.
