Nice Job. Quick Tip - If you are using pond or lake or just plain old dirty water with bits and pieces in it, put it through a cheese cloth or coffee filter first. It will make your Berkey style filters last longer.

Adding a fine mesh bucket filter screen that painters use on top sitting over a big piece of cheese cloth as a prefilter for lakes, ponds, and streams keeps the Berkey filters from constantly clogging up.

If you keep it disassembled, you can store the whole system, and nobody would have any idea that you posses something potentially more valuable than gold - especially if you keep the filters separate.

Definitely helpful - thanks! The Gama lid was clever, too. The only thing I'm going to try to different than what you showed is getting black food-grade buckets to keep algae/etc. from growing as quickly with the sunlight that the white color allows through.

16 qt. I used a plastic bucket lid under the top pot that has the filters so it would sit tight on bottom pot as the top pot was not stable enough for me. I also didn’t use the Berkey filters , but may buy them next time. I used Aqua fresh and they are great. However don’t know if they are as good as Berkey filters.

I kinda just stumbled onto this. Love it! I'm always thinking about survival stuff I may need for an unfortunate hurricane hit to the islands and fresh water is right up there with electrical power. I'm building rain barrels to collect water, but haven't found an easy system to purify other than those camping types that cost big bucks. This is simple and fits my budget. Those Berkely filters can be big bucks though ($160>) as I searched. There are cheap ones too ($40- $60). Not sure if the cheap ones are as good. More research.

Dead simple concept. Makes you wonder why the Berkey cost so much more. Just for info, because of the whole recent issues surrounding the Berkey company, the link you provided for the OEM Berkey filters was over $230. I don’t know what they regularly cost and I’m supposing that the company may have stopped producing them and the scarce remaining supply is going for a premium. Can’t really call it price gouging (feels like it to me), because we are not in a SHTF (yet), so it doesn’t really fit the true definition. It is what it is, however you can get generic ones from a variety of sources that go for $30-$60 depending on brand.

I had to go with a larger size drill bit on the lid holes as my filter stems didn't want to go in easy and didn't want to force the plastic stim..could break you know..the large stem seals still sealed properly, no leaks..had to over size the spout hole too..same problem.. When drilling the 4 lid holes one might use 2 bolts to keep the lid from shifting..I only did a 2 filter unit but still used a bolt to keep lid in place when drilling..almost a must for a 4 hole top tho.. Great DIY vid for first timers like me..Thx...

I used two 12 quart stainless steel stock pots from Wally world. They cost slightly over $20 for the pair. They also had 20 quart pots for slightly more. I just felt stainless steel might hold up better and be easier to clean. I used a pair of ceramic dome filters with silver impregnation. If I had to use really suspect water I think I would also boil it just to be sure I didn't ingest something nasty.

DO NOT BUILD THIS: until you read this review. I built this 4 days ago 6-15-21. This is not a knock on PilotPatriot what so ever. He did a great review. I learned a lot about Berkey as I built this. I purchased the actual Berkey Filters and not the other brand. I tested the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) using a meter design for it. TDS are what can give water a bad taste. I live in an area that has high TDS and arsenic is one of them. Now my results blew my mind. My tap water tests out at 145 ppm. After charging the Berkey filters, I installed them. I built exactly what PilotPatriot built. All brand new food grade buckets and all the parts that he listed in the links above. So my tap water is 145 ppm. I expected and hoped to get half that. I was shocked after reading my meter. It was 195 ppm! Wait, what? It was more than my actual tap water? Still not convinced that I did everything correctly, I emptied out the 5 gallons that I put in the system, then processed another 5 gallons, then tested. Same situation. Tap water 145 ppm, but this time the Berkey water did (slightly) better at 192ppm. I have now run over 35 gallons through, hoping to "clear" out what might be happening. I still get 145 ppm on the tap water going in and 190+ppm coming out. I called Berkey directly. They have a support line 888-803-4438. Their answer to my questions shocked me. "Oh we don't remove TDS because those are good for you." I explained that arsenic is in that TDS. Basically they don't filter anything out of this water other than harmful bacteria and protozoa. If you are wanting to use this filtration system to make your tap water taste better, this is not the way to do it. I appreciate @PilotPatriot creating this tutorial, but these filters just won't cut the mustard. I got my money back on the filters, but the buckets and parts I will have to eat. Sorry to rain on anyones parade. I really wanted this to work, but the simple truth is, it won't.
@PilotPatriot
@PilotPatriot 3 жыл бұрын
I linked to a list of all the things this filters out. I would argue it's not nessesrily designed to make bad tasting water taste better...its designed to make dirty or unhealthy water clean and safe to drink Which would normally would also result in better tasting water. I'm trying to understand your results, are you saying your water had HIGHER levels of TDSs AFTER filtering? How is that possible? Not to knock your testing, but id be curious to see if you'd get the same results if you send it off for professional testing. Also, You mentioned arsenic, Berkey lists that it removes 99.99% of arsenic. List below: VIRUSES - Removed to >99.999% (Log 5) Exceeds Purification Standard (Log 4): MS2 Coliphage ; Fr Coliphage. PATHOGENIC BACTERIA (AND SURROGATES) - Removed to >99.9999% Exceeds Purification Standard (Log 6): Bacillus atrophaeus (Anthrax surrogate); Raoultella terrigena (Pathogenic Bacteria Surrogate); Salmonella Enterica. TRIHALOMETHANES - Removed to >99.8% (Below Lab Detectable Limits): Bromodichloromethane ; Bromoform ; Chloroform ; Dibromochloromethane. INORGANIC MINERALS Removed to Below Lab Detectable Limits: Chloramine; Chloride; Chlorine Residual (Total Residual Chlorine); Free Chlorine HEAVY METALS (HIGH & LOW pH LEVELS) Aluminum (>99%); Antimony (>99.9%); Barium (>80%); Beryllium (>99.9%); Bismuth (>99.9%); Cadmium (>99.7%); Cobalt (>95%); Chromium (>99.9%); Chromium 6 (>99.85%); Copper (>99.9%); Iron (>99.9%); Lead (>99.9%); Mercury (>99.9%); Molybdenum (>90%); Nickel (>99.9%); Vanadium (>87.5%); Zinc (>99.9%). @@PilotPatriot Straight from the mouth of the Berkey employee, "we don't remove disolved arsenic." I don't understand the result either. I'm very knowledgeable on this sort of stuff. I worked in a lab for the first part of my career and understand how to employ testing equipment. If it had reduced some of the TDS, I probably wouldn't be as skeptical as I am right now. Perhaps it is one or both of the filters that I got. I really wanted this to work. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to. I had a limited amount of time to get the filters back and money returned, or I might have kept it and taken the output to a fully equipped lab. I do want to emphasize that this had nothing to do with your ( @PilotPatriot ) build or instructions or why you put the video in place. I did feel that it was important to highlight what is going on with at least the genuine Berkey filters that I received from Amazon. I equally hope that this doesn't detract from your fine video. That certainly was not my intention. You have some fantastic videos that I have really benefited from. That was the reason that I jumped on this project so quickly.

I couldn't tell where the washers go--for the spigot, and the tubes. Is this correct for the spigot: washer goes between the nut and the bucket? Is this correct for the filter tubes: washer goes next to wing nut? Or does it go on the inside of the bucket? THANKS!

Did you need to prime the filters before installing? I watched one video with a lady explaining why she didn’t care for it (first world problems type), but we’re prepping and I’m wondering. Thank you to anyone who answers.

Quiet Madness I bought one of the expensive systems this is “copying” WISH I’d seen this video first to save money….live and learn! I will be making them for others though🤓 After struggling to prime the filters (odd shape of our faucet/adaptors) I found a video somewhere on KZbin (don’t remember the guy’s name or I’d give him credit)simplest way possible EVER! Bought a “squirt bottle” from the $ store…looks a bit like the old time ketchup/mustard bottles in restaurants. Force water through the small end of the filter (a few times) and it’s ready. The stuff the company wants to sell you is totally unnecessary to prime it IMHO. Thank you PilotPatriot. 🙂

If you’re using this as an emergency backup for a grid-down scenario (where you may not have access to clean running water), I’d recommend picking up a manual primer (they’re on Amazon). You can use some stored clean water/bottled water as your primer.

Hi Guys, I have to agree with OK homestead , I live in the uk and built this design , i also ordered a tds meter from amazon as well with the berky filters. The tap water here is sh*te at a reading of 245, after a small filter through the system i was shocked to get a reading of 432. I have refilled and again primed the filters to try again. One problem i seem to have is , i filled the top tub last night and when i checked this morning it has not gone through to the bottom, i believe this is because the tubs are airtight and that the air pressure in the bottom one is restricting the flow from the filters. Has anyone else had this problem?? Other than drilling a small hole in the top of the bottom tub to allow air to escape , i am stuck. Thank you for the video, only thing is you did not show how to prime the filters before fitting.

Don't completely lock down the lid, that may help your water flow problem. I didn't show how to prime the filter because this video is about how to build the Berkey alternative not a full tutorial on how to use it...the filter comes with very simple instructions you can follow for that part.

I am working on making a system with 3 buckets with a sediment filter on top, and 2-berkey filters on middle bucket, with spigot on the bottom to drain out filtered water. I plan on using a hand vacuum pump mounted on bottom to transfer water, and a relief valve on top for air, and to keep system sanitary without putting open holes for air to enter. You might try doing something like this....

Okay I'm a female and that seems simple enough but that filters the water so do you boil the water afterwards, before or not at all? I've seen a KZbinr use the Berkey but I thought it boil the water while filtering. Also the video would have been better if you had actually use the pond water and show us that the system really worked.

Doesn't that setup form a vacuum in the top bucket? If the top is airtight and the water drains out of the bucket, that would leave a vacuum. Should you drill a small air hole in the top? Or is there enough air leakage around the gamma sealer so that this is not a problem?
@PilotPatriot
@PilotPatriot 2 жыл бұрын
The bottom bucket lid is not sealed and the gamma seal lid could be loosened as well
I tested a Berkey... and can’t believe what I found
