i crushed blackboard chalk.. the big ones that children use to write on the pavement. etc.. crushed it to a fine powder and mixed in cheap white acrylic waterbased wall paint and i got a very good pastel chalk paint..
@servantofallah46353 жыл бұрын
Can you share the quantities
@moirhann3 жыл бұрын
@@servantofallah4635 You just have to mix and see how much you need to get the exact color you want. There is also different sizes on the chalks - but i can say an estimate of 3 topped soup spoons of blue chalk in 3 decilitre white acrylic paint. But i tried several times to get the right color..the color is very light blue allready so you need a good amount.. Crush it to a very fine powder and be careful so yo do not breath it in.it must be without any lumps - then just mix it in the white paint.I got lumps in my first batch of green and had to throw it away.. If you want a darker colour i am sure you can just mix in a darker acrylic color.. for example a dark blue acrylic paint with white and blue chalk .. You can put it in a glass jar with a metal lid - tighten it well.. this way you can store it for months. Good luck with your project :)

If you’re ever worried about containers like this maybe not being airtight long term, something I do is before I put the lid on, I add a tight layer of cling wrap & then I put the lid on over that (or plastic film I think is what it’s called in the US?). Just make sure you don’t have too much excess or you might have trouble getting the lid on & you want to pull it taught but not too much, just make a tiny allowance for the lid sliding into place but even if you can’t get it taught, I’m sure it would still work so long as the whole opening of the container is covered, I’ve just always managed to get mine taught so I can’t confirm but I’ve found that works brilliantly, especially for cheaper containers that aren’t airtight long term like paint needs. Empty jars like used jam, coffee or spread jars work even better than containers in my experience & you can do the plastic wrap thing with most of those too if you think the seal might be compromised, just don’t pull the wrap too taught on a twist jar. I find glass jars work better than anything all round. You never have to worry about any reaction with the plastic over time either being glass.

Diatomaceous earth too, it's been used for decades and safe so food quality, not pool grade. Lime, baking powder, unsanded grout, Tums, chalk, plaster ect. They all work and only vary slightly in finish and application. I garden so we deal with science so got some DE on hand, just add paint.
@alexahowmanyhamsters13124 жыл бұрын
Does the paint keep for a while with the DE? :D I have a ton of it lol
@eyeswideshut28004 жыл бұрын
@@alexahowmanyhamsters1312 I think it depends more on the quality of paint, it's just chalk really. I mixed small batches but love the consistency and finish but add water and mix well what's left in can. It took very little paint which is why small batches and levels beautifully. I even mixed my own colors on separate coats and color match was not an issue, it just blended solidly. I didn't sand and painted laminate coated wood with great results. I also didn't seal any of them and moved them roughly. I put a single coat on one laminate dresser and let it naturally distress to see how it wore. It's been now basically water distressed from spills and paint rubbed off nicely. Two coats is great but you only need one for coverage, the two coated pieces hold up if you don't literally scratch or directly knick it off. Make sure it's food grade DE and not pool grade so not toxic but people use lime too. Just go for it, use water based paint and you can just wipe off and remember you can easily paint over any mistake.

Krista Duke you could use the paint containers if you wanted. however I like to have the extra space of the containers because when you purchase the paint, the paint containers is usually pretty full to the top and it makes it a little harder to mix without the paint splashing over the sides which is why I use the containers. I also like having the extra containers around in case I want to mix 2 different colors together to make another color. :)

Some commercial brands of Calcium carbonate are a combination of limestone and quartz (CRYSTALLINE SILICA) regular exposure to crystalline silica can cause lung fibrosis (silicosis).Crystalline silica is classified as an carcinogenic. I don't know about the USA but in Australia this is classed as a hazardous substance. I would recommend you check the contents before using.

Yes you can store the paint in the sampler container. I get asked that question a lot and I addressed it in my new updated chalkpaint video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJvEnIirm9Cma9U I dont store them in the sampler container because the chalk makes the paint thicker and the twisty top tends to get stuck around the rim with the paint and it is really hard to open that twist container once the chalk paint get stuck around it.

Makes chalk paint but also makes matte paint. Even gloss paints will become more matte and sometimes fully matte if you add talc to them. Unscented baby powder will do the same. Buy a $1 size bottle from the Dollar store and it lasts a long time for crafting if you only add small amounts to your paints. Mix with a paint medium or water.

Thanks so much for this recipe for homemade chalk paint! Do these have a long shelf life?? 👍👍
@Soulful-Scribes4 жыл бұрын
Your welcome! The shelf life is around 6-8 months. You will notice when it starts going bad cuz it gets chunky.

Hi I loved your Popsicle stick sample idea. I am concerned about the plastic waste. How about mixing the calcium carbonate in one container then pouring it directly into the original paint jar? No need to throw that jar away and no need to buy more plastic containers for the mixed chalk paint.

I have actually gotten that question a lot and I covered why I dont use the original paint jar in my updated chalk paint video if you want to check that out : kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJvEnIirm9Cma9U

Do you still need to use wax after using a homemade chalk paint? If so, what brand do you recommend?
@Soulful-Scribes4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Yes you still need to use either wax or polycrylic to seal the chalkpaint in. I use this wax : amzn.to/39s5lcr . If I am using Polycrylic, I use this one : amzn.to/2QAZ4Ta . I also have a new updated chalkpaint video that has a little more detail. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJvEnIirm9Cma9U

What a clever idea to paint the wood sticks. Genius! I live in Europe and we have no opportunity to buy sample size paints. I wish we could because I love chalk paint and would have many more colors if I didn't have to buy a liter at a time of latex. Thanks for posting this idea. BTW- do you use warm water or just plain - out-of-the-tap water? I've seen online that some crafters say that it's best to use distilled water because the paint will have a longer shelf life. Any thoughts on that?

I normally just use tap water. My shelf life last a pretty long time on mine.

Great video. I'm going to try this on a night stand for my daughter. Does this have to be sealed with clear wax like the other chalk wax or can I just put on the polyacrylic ?
@Soulful-Scribes7 жыл бұрын
Gloria Fields I always use polycrylic protective finish, it protects better than wax.

Can not wait to try this paint. Thank you. Do u have any idea if the Poly would work on a metal/aluminum surface? As in a mail box? Having a hard time finding something that holds up in the harsh weather.

Oh thank you so much. Im making a RIP mailbox with all my family members that Jesus has picked up so far. But ill add all kinds of 'happy' pictures so it wont be a depressing ' mourning' mailbox. Thank you again for the recipe and the mailbox info.
