I've made this and I can attest that it works great! I keep my homemade chalk paint in the sample bottle the paint came in. The first time I made this I had an 8 oz. bottle paint sample of Valspar. So I just added the water-calcium carbonate mixture directly into the sample bottle & mixed well. I still have some left in that original bottle and it's still fresh a few years later.

I used to work at Lowes as a paint specialist and Valspar paint is awesome, I love it and believe me when I say that I have no idea how anyone can have a good reason for charging so much for chalk paints. I love your directions for mixing the calcium carbonate with water first before mixing with your pain, and yes using flat paint is the way to go. Great job. Thanks for the video!

What a nice comment! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on Valspar. It's my favorite go to paint to make chalk paint. I agree the entire chalk paint line of paints is a scam. $40-$50 for a quart of paint???? C'mon!!!!! Their marketing is so fraudulent too, no prep paint? It's laughable to me. They have preyed upon people's naivety. I'm a rebel out here on the interwebs speaking up.

There are many options out there. I'll just add my two cents. I tried plaster paris many moons ago. It gets lumpy and doesn't stay fresh. Calcium carbonate I found is the best additive out there. Smooth consistency and you can keep your paint over a weeks time and keep using it. (as long as you cover it)

I'm a furniture flipper in Toronto, Canada and the price of chalk paint eats at most of my profits. Of course, I use a very well known brand which I will not name here but I have to say, it's my favourite and I love it but it's sooooo expensive .. 1 quarte is $50. I'm going to try this at home and I will let you know how it turns out. Thank you so very much for posting this!! :)

Oh I hear ya with trying to keep your overhead costs as low as possible when trying to flip furniture. Great! Thanks for the recipe. I am now looking forward to doing a couple of projects I’ve put off for a long time because of the cost of the chalk paint. I have a couple of questions about this if you (or someone viewing) can answer. Have you ever done a whole pint or quart right in the can? For instance in doing larger projects- or if you often use a particular color. What do you seal with? The furniture I’m doing is Mid Century Dressers- plain, simple lines- I really don’t want to use wax- if only because the brushes are too expensive for me right now- and also because I’m a one and done person, I know I’ll never go back to do it again when the time comes- if I dust I consider myself a living miracle! Lol And- what kind of brush do you use for the paint? It didn’t look like one of the big round brushes people always say you “need.” OH! Has anyone ever done kitchen cabinets? I’ve read varying opinions on it. Sorry for all the questions- if anyone can answer I’d appreciate it. Thanks again! Just subscribed!
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 2 жыл бұрын
I'll try to get to all your questions. First thank you for subscribing! Welcome! Yes you can add the calcium carbonate directly into a pint or a quart of paint. Remember to add the water and stir stir stir. Just make sure you stir it completely in. I seal most of my chalk painted piece with a water based poly. I like High Performance Flat by General Finishes. Super easy to apply. Wax has it's place on some pieces, but it's a hassle to buff it. I usually paint with Cling On Brushes. They are on the expensive side but they are worth it to me. No shedding like the round brushes and the paint washes right off. I beat to my own drum with my flipping business and here on KZbin. I don't jump on to trends and I definitely will tell people the truth when it comes to what works and what doesn't. There's some areas yes where you can go cheap with supplies and other areas where I would advise investing in better tools and supplies. Kitchen cabinets I would recommend an enamel paint vs. chalk paint. Enamel paint has the topcoat built in the paint. The most important piece to painting kitchen cabinets and the prepping part. I hope I answered all your questions.

Thanks for sharing this recipe! Cant wait to try it. my I ask about priming… do you ever use primer before using your chalk paint and if so, when do you use primer?
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 2 жыл бұрын
You’re so welcome I hope the recipe works well for you. Yes sometimes I do use a primer before I apply chalk paint. It all depends on the color of paint I’m using. If I’m painting a piece white I will first apply two coats of white primer that is shellac based. You have to get the primer that is shellac based or it won’t block stains and wood tannins coming to the surface. If I’m painting a piece a mint green I will apply clear shellac (two coat) before I apply my chalk paint. Every time I paint with chalk paint I do first apply a primer of sorts, so it’s either clear shellac or a white primer with a shellac base.

I've been making chalk paint with plaster of Paris, however I'll probably change to the calcium carbonate if Bethany confirms that the white paint colour doesn't change when using the CC. I find the white paint changes to a grey white when using plaster of Paris which doesn't work for my crafts as I need the chalk paint whiter. I store my chalk paint in a large mouth mason jar with a plastic Ball lid. I just finished using a batch that I made in January.

@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 Well, first...I'm not liking the color! Second it seems to be distressing "too easy" if that makes sense. I started by cleaning with Heirloom traditions furniture prep. I did a rinse with plain water. Then I primed twice with Zinnzer BIN 123 primer. Not sure why it's sanding down that easy. Maybe too chalky to honest. I could have added too much of the dreaded plaster of paris thatI didn't realize was toxic until now!

Oh nooooo! Okay I’ll going to help you save some big bucks. A free roadside dresser shouldn’t be costing you this much in materials. Let’s talk paint. To answer your question yes you can use this calcium carbonate with ANY shade of paint. Use a latex paint and a low sheen. I love Valspar paint from Lowe’s. If you don’t want to make your own chalk paint I’ll recommend two budget friendly brands. Walmart’s chalk paint called Waverly. It’s in the craft section, not the paint section. Also Rustoleum makes a nice chalk paint as well. That can be found at Walmart as well. I would stay away from any type of spray paint. Your project yellowed probably because either 1. You didn’t prep correctly or 2. You used an oil based clear coat.

Hi Kathy! I seal my painted projects with either wax or water based Polycrylic. It all depends on the look I’m going for AND how the piece will be used. Polycrylic offers more durable protection vs. wax. Wax also provides protection just not as much as Polycrylic.

Can I use floetroll paint additive in your chalk paint receipt to help eliminate brush marks for a glass-like finish? Or do you have another suggestion?
@melindat5711
@melindat5711 3 жыл бұрын
That's a great question! I've never used chalk paint but I've been watching a ton of videos. I've seen videos where the finish looks rough. I know a lot of people want that type of finish, but I personally prefer smooth.
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 3 жыл бұрын
The main purpose with chalk paint is that it dries super fast and gives off a matte, chalky appearance which is great for distressing. Adding floetroll would defeat the purpose in a sense because people purposely choose chalk paint because of it's fast dry time. I also don't know how it would react with the chalk paint recipe. I avoid brush marks two ways. I use Cling On Brushes. Definitely worth the hype. That's all I use. Also by sanding in between each painted coat. When I say sand I mean hand sand with 400-500 grit sandpaper. Not aggressive. Feather like. I wrap the sand paper around a felt block.

Why must you use flat or matte? What happens if the sheen is eggshell or satin?
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 Жыл бұрын
Flat/matte finishes have less binder in them. Satin and gloss paint have more binder in them. So when you mix the calcium carbonate with glossy/satin paint it can mix horribly. Creating an almost cement like mixture. It’s happened to me before I figured it out. So I advise people to go with a sheen like matte or flat.

@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 5 жыл бұрын
Joanne Wolff There are two different products I use for a top coat over chalk paint. Wax and water based Polycrylic. Really depends on the use of the piece of furniture. If it’s a higher traffic piece I would advise Polycrylic. It also depends on the overall look I’m aiming for. If I want a more not so shiny look, but a slight sheen I’ll use wax. If I want a more glossy look I use Polycrylic. It should be noted Polycrylic comes in different sheens. I usually use matte or satin. To me Polycrylic is shiner than clear wax.

Hi Bethany, You are an inspiration. I am looking forward to make my own chalk paint too. The water based latex paint that you used is for furniture or for walls. Ahhhh thank you so much! That's my hope is to inspire others. Latex paint is latex paint. So if they are telling you it's for just walls is weird. Yes get the latex paint (even if they say it's only for walls), that's what I get just plain old latex paint. BUT please remember to get it in a flat or matte sheen. That's very important. Definitely don't get oil based. I hope that answered your question.
