DIY Boat Solar Charger 10 Watt System

Check out this boat solar charger! This is how I made my 10 W trickle solar charger for my boat. To mount the panel to my boat are used an anchor light kit and modified it to hold the panel. The charge regulator is not a very expensive unit but it had half decent reviews. It was cheap enough I can get another if it fails. On the first day of testing I started with a completely charged battery, 12.2 volts. Once I plugged in the 10 W panel in the full sun it immediately took the meter to12.9 Volts. I was fishing for about four hours with no change in status of the battery running my fish finder.

Thanks for the reply mate👍🏽 I pulled the trigger this afternoon on a 18v 5w panel for the boat. Would’ve liked to go a bit bigger but the dimensions restricted me as I’ve got a pretty shnazzy spot for it to fit. I live in a place with 100% sun so hopefully it should trickle constantly when on the water and compensate for the radio/lights. Thanks again mate from Australia 🇦🇺

I have found that 10w here in Las Vegas seems to be plenty for my application. My system on the boat only runs a few lights and my fish finder. I have the charging regulator and panel connected inside my garage and it works as a trickle charger.

Does this actually maintain the battery while in use? I have been looking into doing this. I have 2 - 27 group batteries that I run parallel and by the end of they day they barely get me back to the dock.

I run my fish finder and radio off of this system and after several hours my meter still says 12.3v Your special battery usage parameters are different then mine. For the way I use my battery this setup works great. My boat has a 4 stroke 2.3hp Honda so I don’t use my battery for propulsion.

@@MrFredsDIY what size motor? Just seeing you have the battery in the back and probably fuel tank to and steer from back there? Is weight an issue? Just got a boat and having to kind of set it all from scratch came with a 40hp Yamaha no battery or cables or fuel tank or lines. Appreciate any advice. Are you going to put a floor or is the ribbing not that much of a nuisance.
