I have a little corner of my room that has the leather arm chair that goes with my couch pushed into a corner. Beautiful job. I saw something like this and they used piano hinges on the lift top doors. If you sanded the doors a little bit so they didn't rub on each other that might work. Just a thought for your future updates. I can't wait to rebuild the old one in my house.
