I live in Florida. Some asshat destroyed my vinyl covered 4x4 setup. So. I got me a 6x6. Sunk it 43” in concrete. With 8 pieces of 3/4” rebar. Also about 43”. I’m going to build something very similar to this project around it. Probably fill it all with concrete. Or broken pavers I already have. So the next time someone tries to hit it. The mailbox wins.

A couple of things. Wear thin gloves. The acid in the mortar will eat off your skin. When I pour the footing, I nail forms together. Makes it look nice and clean. Also, have enough bricks and mortar on hand. Also, an ad mix will make that mortar stick like you would not believe. I had to do a repair on a planter, and I had to grind off the mortar in the old bricks. Would have been nice to see how you put the mail box in; that's the tricky part. Did you support it? Also, a cheap angle grinder will cut bricks. Or you local brick yard may have a brick cutting saw. My local guy charged me 50 cents per brick to cut it to size. A water-cooled diamond saw. The bricks I buy are very hard. Otherwise, nice job. You should make your crappy neighbor pay for it.

Thanks for the tips! these will help in future projects. Sorry for missing the mailbox being placed. I supported it in the back by cutting the bricks behind the box in half creating a shelf for the box to rest on and from the outside nothing looks different. Thanks!

Why do we have to worry about frost if we live in a cold zone?
@SimonSaysDIY
@SimonSaysDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Overtime frost will push objects up and out of the ground. The dirt below the mailbox will freeze and when it does it will expand and lift up the mailbox slightly. as it defrosts the mailbox will not settle back down where it was and could start to lean or tip over. This may take several years but it's something you may want to plan for. To fix this you will want to find out how deep the frost goes in your area and then dig down to that point and build up from there.

@1927Scavengers 2 жыл бұрын
Mine just got smashed last night. I had a 4x4 4 ft in the hole and used that expanding foam. The post held up fine. It was the pvc assembly that failed. So now I got a 6x6 43” deep. 8 -42” pieces of 3/4” rebar. So far for 6 bags of concrete. Place is to get more concrete and build something very similar to what you did. I have left over pavers And cement blocks. To accommodate that. I will prob fill the cavity with broken chunks for more reinforcement. I a car hits this the mailbox wins.

Why did you use mortar for the first part of the bricks then went for cement?
@SimonSaysDIY
@SimonSaysDIY 3 жыл бұрын
I used mortar on all joints in between the bricks. Cement/Concrete mix has stones in it and this causes issue in the joints as the stones don't allow the bricks to be leveled properly. Mortar is smooth without rocks and this is used for block and brick laying.

What are your dimensions for the mailbox ? Base?
@stevenwatson2699
@stevenwatson2699 4 жыл бұрын
I am a bricklayer; I usually make footer about 30x30, 7 to 8 in. deep. You need to make sure you get down to solid ground; I have seen many leaning because of that.

My base was 2x3 foot. A larger square would be better as Steven has mentioned.

Is it just sitting flush against the bricks?
@SimonSaysDIY
@SimonSaysDIY 3 жыл бұрын
@@noerodriguez3595 Sorry I didn't show that. I actually cut the bricks on the backside where the mailbox would be in half the longways. This made the brick wall thinner on the back behind the mailbox ad created a shelf for the box to sit on in the back. Right at 4:56 in my video, I cut a brick in half to fit behind the mail box. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

@SimonSaysDIY
@SimonSaysDIY 4 жыл бұрын
I used just regular masonry mortar. The main thing you want to look for is that is doesn't have any rocks of pebbles in the mix. I should just be a fine powder.

I actually left a hole in the slab beneath it so that the water could drain. Because of that we haven’t had any issues with too much water.

Simon how are the flowers doing? I’m thinking of placing a pvc pipe or something inside the hole to help with drainage. Thoughts?

Thanks! Unfortunately one week after I finished the mailbox some one smashed it. The base stayed in place but the top broke off. I rebuilt it and filled it with solid cement and rebar. Maybe its overkill but I don't want someone to destroy it again lol. :) thanks for watching!

@@jenchancey3933 I'd probably us 4x4 blocks inside and put weep holes in the bottom run of brick instead of putting a whole in the slab

Well, a week after building it someone in a truck destroyed it and I have to put it back together. The second time I filled the inside with cement and rebar to make it withstand someone hitting it again. See link below for the video of the repair kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4i8nKyeiLCWn80

This looks the best of any brick mail boxes I have seen. Bravo!!! Wish I knew more about your mixture of mortar and water? It was fun watching you do this in time lapse but need more detail from you since I no nothing about laying bricks and I wish to build this for my new mail box which is rather large. Fabulous design and craftsmenship though.
