I just finished watching the building of this mailbox. It's a shame the person that hit it didn't get back to you, but at least now it will be a lot harder to knock over

We had several mailboxes mowed down. It was ironic that I met one of the men that suffered from a broken arm he received trying to destroy my mailbox that we had driven steel and concrete underground all welded steel. Even the numbers displayed 100 were made with rivets. I’d be mad the man didn’t live up to his word. Cement is a great choice Simon!

Awesome job. Had this happen to me but with my car. Came out one morning to find a note under my wipers with a phone number. I knew somebody must have hit it and indeed after looking around, found my front bumper grill was pushed in. I rang the number a few times but no answer. LOL. The guy must have had second thoughts after he managed to silence his conscience. For anyone wondering how to lift something so large on your own, then the easiest would be to cut the piece down a little further, so say if it is 10 bricks high, use an angle grinder to cut the mortar all the way around every 2 rows of brick, giving you five smaller sections, 2 rows high. These should be easier to lift. You can then clean off the mortar before bedding down again. A little more tedious but manageable.
@SimonSaysDIY
@SimonSaysDIY Жыл бұрын
That’s really unfortunate! I like that idea of cutting it down with the grinder. If I do it again I will definitely use that. Thanks so much! 😁

@@SimonSaysDIY No worries. I had another idea too, considering how many times it's been hit, it might just be that it's difficult to see it at night. Sticking 1 or 2 cheap garden solar lights into the soil near the mail box (the stick-in-the-ground-and-forget-about-it kind) might light it up. The cheaper the better, in case someone wants to steal them, lol.

looks good, I think I would of prefered to just take it all apart and rebuild it though. I built a brick letterbox for my parents about 14 years ago and its never been hit by anyone we generally have a naturestrip and sidewalk between the road and property in australia so unless someones really doing something stupid its not near the road atleast

Oh no way! That had to be a horrible sinking feeling to walk out and see how someone hit it and ten didn't even do the right thing and pay to fix it! Looks great again though! Thanks for the video, I've been wanting to do this to our mailbox as the wind is so strong here it broke our discontinued bracket which means a whole new bracket and mailbox! In our case some automotive adhesive is doing great until we build the brick!

Interesting videos. I had just watched your first video on building it when I read about your damage to it with the link to the new video of repairing it. We have considered a similar style brick mailbox. We live in the country and our existing pole mounted mailbox has been hit several times with farming equipment going by not paying attention - so I was a bit hesitant in putting one in. However, your cement/rebar reinforced updated one looks more promising. I may yet try putting one in yet. Glad I read that you put in a camera now!!! 😅

Some one leaving a party in our neighborhood hit mine last night at 11pm, I went out to see and he was 3 houses up checking his car, it was making a racket. Then he got in and started to drive away. By the time I ran back in, put on my shoes, grabbed my keys and phone he was out of our neighborhood and out of sight. I have white paint on the brick, a partial lower rubber bumper protector that says Honda on the back, and leaked coolant in front of the mailbox. Mine is intact with a few broken bricks at the bottom. The base is comprised of two cinder blocks, with more stacked higher up, covered with bricks. It must weight half a ton, it's a good six feet tall. Three of us couldn't budge it. LOL. If I can jack it up like you did yours perhaps we can slide it over into the six inch deep foundation. I got an estimate for a new one: $1500. YIKES Thanks for the info

Someone damaged our mailbox and stole our packages so my husband and I bought a new locked mailbox. We are hoping to brick it in ourselves. About how much did it originally cost to do this? Also, you have amazing patience. If I found out what neighbor did this, it would be a fight hahah.
@SimonSaysDIY
@SimonSaysDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, thats frustrating... Thankfully no one has bothered it since I build it the second time. I used about 170 bricks and around 5-6 bags of concrete for the base and 6 bags of mortar laying the brick.

That added rebar will put any damage and injury liability squarely on your shoulders should a vehicle hit the masonry mailbox again. The mailbox must be able to break away from the slap upon impact, just as it did before.
@SimonSaysDIY
@SimonSaysDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Well, now we have cameras that could catch who crashes into it and see who is at fault. It’s a very slow road 10-15mph and there shouldn’t be any extensive damage or injury :)

An Amazon delivery person ripped my mailbox off. I had one of the only mailboxes in my neighborhood that didn't sag. Now it's all jacked. I was under the impression it would cost much so I quoted them $250 and they paid asap. It will definitely cost more than that.

Mailboxes fall under federal government jurisdiction therefore it is a felony to destroy one and the offending party is responsible for damages.

Good so far! no one has hit it as far as I know. It is much stronger now so it will at least destroy their car if they smash into it hard enough to take out the mailbox again.
@antonisautos8704

Thats good to know, if they somehow end up breaking it again I have a suggestion. Dig down about 2 feet and put a concrete and rebar enforced base up to where the bottom of the mailbox would sit. Use wood to make a form to hold the concrete and rebar. Pour it in, let it set of course. Then remove the wood form and lay the bricks on the ledge of the foundation and against the concrete colum.. if that makes sense.

Permits should be required to build mail box. They are needed for just about anything one does on the house or yard.
@Reversion9360
@Reversion9360 Жыл бұрын
"Permits should be required" ...? WHY? USPS publishes requirements for a mailbox install. USPS doesn't deliver mail if your build doesn't meet these requirements. Why complicate this further with additional permit requirements and costs? Plus, mailboxes near a road like this should be built to fall over if a vehicle strikes. This is done to prevent severe injury or death to the driver/passengers of the car. Maybe I am not seeing your train of thought, but I don't agree that more requirements should be placed on homeowners for simple DIY projects that pose no serious risk to life or property. Electrical permits, YES! Mailbox permits, No.
@geraldsmith3423
@geraldsmith3423 Жыл бұрын
@@Reversion9360 USPS doesn't enforce their rules, should there be a serous injury, they will state these are guide lines. Read the comments and your looking at video you will see people build what ever they want in the right of way. Permit would hold both the builder and the governing bodies to some standard. Deaths and serous injury from postal structures are around 200 plus, per year, Yes, it adds another layer of government but it takes away the person from saying "no body told me I couldn't build it". Let me add the permit would be waved if the structure met Federal guide lines.

I seen your video, I'm giving you a sorry , cause I know what your going through, I am planning on redoing my mailbox this spring, I have all the specs I'm mind, I have available resources, there are 2 neighbors just down the road from my area, that have cement brick mailboxes, and I have looked 3,4 other videos on mailboxes and have heard the federal regulations about this situation, and I'm thinking about the federal democraticy about this mailbox bullshit, and I've never heard not one detail about any of it, this one law they are not enforcing, the regulations say, no more than 2ft in the ground for wooden post, and if you build fortknox around your box , they have more concern about the motorist being hurt, instead of the mailbox, their not saying a f------,thing about brick mailboxes, so I'm planning the hard wood , hard oak wooden approach, tongue and grove plus big screws, yeah, there's a few bastards m-f------ backstabbing dumbasses out there with no respect, but we have to consider the main bottom line, eventually they will get theirs, in the end, wayneeden95@gmail.com

Thanks for watching and commenting! Good luck building your new mailbox. My goal was to at least do damage to the vehicle that nocks my mailbox down again. A rugged hardwood mailbox will definitely hold up to small impacts and will deal out a lot of damage if hit hard enough to destroy it.

@@SimonSaysDIY I understand your intention completely, I made the comment on one of these videos about mailboxes, just like the military and school training, some people can negotiate any obstacle course within reason, but there are a lot of people who can't maintain a straight line , they shouldn't even be in the f------,car and that's when their sober, bad attention span, bad attention to detail, you can't drive stay off road, there are some good mailbox videos, you have to decide on what you want, wayneeden95@gmail.com
