I just made this and wanted to confirm for any doubters that the sizing IS correct. I have a large head so I cut it with the slight extra as indicated and used about 1/4" seams on my serger. All the pieces fit together exactly, with no fudging or ease needed, and it's plenty roomy on my large noggin! I live in North America so it's not A4 paper -- setting it to 100% actually makes the very bottom of the circle go off the bottom edge, so if I had one suggestion for how the pdf could be updated, it would be to have the circle a couple of cm higher on the page. That way it wouldn't cut off for those of us adapting to non-A4. That's a clue for folks -- if you're using letter paper, 8.5x11", and your print did NOT cut off the bottom of the circle, then you didn't have it set to 100%. :)

i set it to 100% and the circle diameter actually measures to 170mm as stated but it's not cut off at the bottom. I wonder if the pattern was updated?

Love this, So helpful! Something I found easier for the non raw finish is sewing the finish of the hats inside out (the last part that you would see) and leaving a little opening then pulling the hat through that opening and sewing it closed!

ok, my Singapore restricted COVID hobbies have been bread making, classic cocktails, and now bucket hats thanks to this tutorial. I am a 50+ man, who has never sewed in my life, and now I have made matching family reversible bucket hats! My child (8m) picked the material, so it is Harry Potter and Marvel, but they turned out great! I have a monstrous-sized head so I used a Diam/Circumference calculator and worked out how to expand the circle piece and then extrapolated the other pieces and it worked perfectly. As for the standard sizes on the template, in case it helps anyone zero in on the size to use, my wife has a 57cm head circumference and we used the dotted line version which produced a comfortable/loose hat, as my wife prefers. My son has a 51cm circumference so I drew a new smaller circle with a 16.2cm diam, and cut 4mm before (smaller than) the solid line on the brim and headband patterns, and this works as well.

just wanna say im a complete beginner at sewing, before this i had only ever sewn together small scraps of fabric together in an attempt to practice doing straight lines lol (still not super straight 😭) I chose this as my first project and WOW did your instructions make this so easy and calming to do. I expected to be sobbing over my machine but instead i calmly finished the hat (fully double sided) within a little more than 4 hours. Your instructions are super clear and helpful, and i learned a lot through the process! thank you sm for this wonderful tutorial, LOVE my new hat!

I sew, so the step by step on fabric cutting wasn’t needed but the way you explained so clearly step by step made me realize no one had done this as clearly and concisely before and it would have been so handy when I was first learning. You’re a great teacher.

This is a great pattern and tutorial. Another method for making it reversible is to turn one of the pieces right side out leaving the other wrong side out and placing the hats right side together, pin and sew around the brim leaving an opening for turning. This method will also have the seam on the inside. Then you can top stitch around the edge of the brim and sew the other lines as well.

Thank you for the bucket hat pattern and tutorial. I used the measurements to create my pattern (as opposed to using a printer). Everything fit together nicely. I do have a suggestion for anyone making the hat for use in a cold climate. I made the reversible hat using 2 layers of fleece and although it’s warm, it would be better if the headband was about an inch wider so as to cover the ears. My next one will also make the brim an inch or so narrower. Greetings from the USA.

Great tutorial, thank you so much! I used the regular size pattern (same 22" size head) and found that the style still sits more on the crown of the head. It still looks great on, but I'd suggest going up a size if you want it to sit a bit deeper and snugger :)

Interestingly, my printer (in the U.S.) was set to scale at 100%, but the pattern was still measuring only 160mm. I tried to increase the scale until the circle reached 170mm...but it wouldn't do it--in a fit of pique I jacked the scale to 200% and it still printed at 160mm LOL. Weird. Anyhow, I happened to notice that my printer allows me to select the paper type, so I selected A4, and went back to 100% scale and it printed perfectly--except some of the outer circle printed off the page. Since I print a lot of patterns from sources out of the U.S, I decided to purchase some A4 paper to avoid this complication in the future. Yay! Love the pattern and the tutorial. Thank you!

For all new sewers making this, remember to wash your fabric before sewing it (so your hat doesn't shrink) and to iron your fabric before cutting. Also, follow the golden rule of sewing : sew a seam, finish a seam (eg- zig zag edge of seam allowance, flat fell, French seam, over lock, pink the seam allowance etc), then iron the seam. This makes it much stronger and a much better finished piece

Hiii I actually made my own bucket hat :3 I sewed it by hand since I dont have a machine. It turned out kinda cute. However the top part of the hat seemed a tiny bit larger than the brim ;-; So there is a minor creasing somewhere in the sewing of the hat ;-; Yet I respected the measurements...The only thing I changed is increasing the scale of template impressions (103%) just because I needed my had bigger since I have alot of hair..I also cut the seam allowance. Do you know why did the hat was a lil bit large Mr than the brim and leaving me with a crease? I'm a bit disappointed about that tbh ): But other than that.. it looks cute for my first time making one. :3
@sharks2571
@sharks2571 3 жыл бұрын
@@asipofteawithnosuga hey, I'll try to help but don't know how useful it will be. The pattern included seam allowance, so you didn't have to cut extra, so that may have been the issue. Theoretically if you made all the pieces bigger by the same amount it should have still worked, so I think it is likely that your cutting or sewing wasn't as precise as it should have been to get the right result. Unless there is a reason otherwise, you should sew an equal distance from the edge on all seams, so if you weren't perfectly precise on these bits, that may have caused the issue. I'm not exactly sure what the crease was caused by, but look at the stitching in that area and make sure that no extra fold of fabric is caught in the seams. If so, you might be able to fix it by re-doing that seam. You seem to have done a great job for a beginner though. It takes time to learn how to sew garments and the mistakes I suggested that could have led to your issues here are really easy to make, so don't beat yourself up about it. Hope that helped somewhat

Try using iron on interfacing- it'll give it a little bit of thickness and it will act as a barrier between the fabrics (each material has a blank sheet behind it so it'll show only that design), as it is white and translucent... I dont know if thats what you were asking about though lol :)
