DIY Build your own Component to VGA Cable

Hello All!
Just thought I'd share a new DIY video in hopes to saving you guys some money from buying a component to VGA adapter.

So, when you say you connected "green to green, and blue to blue" are you referring to the actual spliced cables or the vga wire to rca male plug head. They are blue to green wires in the video

Depends, if your tv can handle a progressive scan it might work. If you have a tube tv, this might not work unless the tv also has a vga input. Thanks for watching!

Could you tell me if this could work the other way around?, I mean if can conect a PC with a VGA out to a CRT TV with component inputs?. I´ve heard that the refresh rate of VGA signal is not compatible with TVs, but I`ve also seen this kinds of cables for sale.

Yeah if you have a video card that can match the refresh rate and output interlaced you might be able to do it. You should check the specs of your CRT, then try to match it with your PC. You might be able to make it work like that. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching!

Have you tried plugging (Composite Video or Yellow RCA like VHS player) with your DIY cable's green wire? I was wondering if plugging a yellow output to the green rca would work on your projector. I know that the green component works as composite video. My small Sony Trinitron with only AV input can see the Green component of my dvd player as a composite video with colors. Maybe your projector could see a composite video as well through your DIY Cable. For reference: YPbPr (Y is Green/Luminance/Composite/Sync, Pb is Blue, and Pr is Red) Another format is Sync-on-Green or RGsB (Red, Sync-Green, Blue) If ever the first try it doesnt work, try the blue component. (Due to the manufacturer's confusion in coloring green and blue as you've caught early in the video)

Genius man! I've been trying to get a retro pc set up to a great sony trinitron tv ive got but couldn't find a decent adapter. Did you have to use any other components or was the wiring enough? Do you know if it would work from vga out to component in? Regardless, this is great man.

Just the wiring worked fine for me. I am not sure if it would work with VGA to Component on any device. What I do know is that a digital signal will not work on a CRT. If you can get your device to deactivate any kind of progressive scan signal or use only an interlace signal, it might work (but don't quote me)! Thank you for watching my videos!

It won’t work, your crt most likely takes 15 kHz, no computer outputs that signal.

No his device takes YPbPr (component) through the HD-15 (vga) port. VGA isn’t a plug it’s a signal standard, fun fact vga is a type of component video. The fact is this won’t work for everyone. You need to know what your device is capable of accepting first before doing this.

Hi Man, do you have an idea how to output the signal to a CRT TV how the wiring should be for that. I intend to use my Graphics card that has an DVI - I output which means it can output analog signal or VGA. I have a cable that is DVI - I to BNC it has 7 connectors it came bundled from a media device. I think that cable can do the job i have measured the analog RGB pins and they are wired properly, the other part from the cable's bnc's to the CRT TV's SCART i intend to use an already made scart cable, just to cut it and wire it up with bnc at the proper wires.

Try your way. If you can adjust the setting on your video card to some type of component signal that is compatible with your tv it should work. I mainly tried to use this to convert a component signal to my video projector. My video project was able to convert the component signal to a vga, but I don't think this is standard to all monitors or CRTs. Let me know how it goes! Thanks for watching!

Thank you for the video. Have you ever built a cable/adapter to connect YCbCr (camcorder output) to USB (pc input)? I haven't found anything similar on the market, there's only some HDMI to USB adapter.

Quite necro-posting from my end, but just for sake of helping anyone else with the same doubt, Capture cards may do that work. They recieve HDMI and sends over USB video while reporting itself as a Camera device, or instead as a proper capture card that needs drivers (for example the high end Elgato PCI-Express instead of USB). There are quite a few non-branded capture cards that do HDMI->USB but they get heat easily. Also, im not considering converting any analog signal (VGA, Component Out, etc) to HDMI because of this project and there's quite a few affordable VGA to HDMI converters (and vice versa too)

I got a VGA extension cable as extension for a Fostex D90 before i tried it i got my multi meter out and the pins are completely the wrong way round opposite for continuity on each side of the connector. I couldn't get it wrong because i know by the shape of each side only fits one way when testing it. Needless to say i tried it and it didn't work did i get a bum cable on ebay i cut one end open and only 8 wires

I would watch out with using CRTs or older TV's when using digital outputs. Some cannot handle the higher resolutions. If you're going to use a Wii, I would find out if you can deactivate progressive scan, because if you can't it won't work.

I've only used it with devices that use an interlaced signal. When it comes to progressive scan, there might be some compatibility issues. I would rather try buying a converter (Y PB PR to HDMI). They are pretty cheap (between $13-20). Thanks for watching!

@@trymoremazarura8250 your device can’t take component. He built what’s called a pass through cable. It just passes the video signal through to another connection type, it doesn’t change it from component.

On paper it should work since your ps2 component signal should work on a VGA monitor. I have not tried it myself, but assuming that it worked on my projector, I have no reason to believe that it wouldn't work on a VGA monitor. Thank you for watching!

No the monitor won’t know what to do with YPbPr (component). Also you monitor won’t be able to even see the 15kHz signal if your ps2 is outputting 480i, a vga monitor only sees 31kHz which a ps2 can do but it does 15kHz 98% of the time

It’s not that simple. Your tv can’t take the kHz range your laptop will output.

Can i connect my setup box which gives output of av/rca i think, it has three wires. Video, left audio, right audio or red, yellow, white. Can i use same method to connect it to my vga monitor

The composite signal from your setup box will not be seen by your VGA monitor is you try to use the green cable. My best suggestion would be to get a composite to VGA converter box. They have some on eBay and are relatively inexpensive. Thanks for watching!

Depends on your laptop and monitor. If your laptop can do an interlaced signal to your CRT TV it should work. If your TV can't handle the signal coming out of your laptop it wont work.

I believe you can but only in black and white. The green signal in component is black and white composite video Color requires more circuitry because of the way NTSC color is injected onto a b&w signal.

Can you tell me what components your are trying to hook up together? Maybe I can help. I can tell you that it has worked perfectly to hookup simple component devices like my Sony Media player, my Apple TV, my DVD player and most component devices that I own to a VGA in. I am not sure it would work for VGA out to Component in. I hope this is helpful.

Laptops usually have a very high resolution, so if you are trying this on a CRT, it wont work unless the signal is interlaced.

The colors don’t really matter on RCA cables. You can send video and sound through and color rca cable. Just make sure your device can accept component through vga

From some reading and plenty of videos, I find out that the HDMI cable is compatible to allow from the input source to the outout source. However, VGA cables are meant to transfer Data through the pins. This is to why there is no sound. What I did as a workaround since I have a wired controler as well as a wired for gaming, I have the wireless controller with a audio Aux cable to A JBL Charge bluettoth soeaker and this speaker emmits the same synced signal to 2 other JBL flip speakers I have setup as a small and interchangeable surround sound. I have seen people connect through the fiber optics audio cable and add a bluetooth adapter to connect your own bluetooth head unit. There is a slight barely noticeable delay but I can hardly ever tell.

I am sorry to hear this Enrique, it certainly depends on what you are using the cable for. I would not recommend using this using progressive mode for any device since the cable really doesn't work on CRTs unless you do 480i or other interlaced signals. Another piece of advise would be checking the double checking the wiring. I always check the continuity to make sure I spliced the cables correctly. Thanks for watching! Vertical and horizontal sync doesn’t play into this my dude vga is not a connector it’s a video standard, the HD-15 connector can RGBHV (aka VGA) and YPbPr (aka component video). The connector is not what you need to know, you need to know what your device can take which is usually in the manual. Now I have my own hang ups with Joels video but I’m not gonna say it’s false. It does work for very specific use cases. The guy seems to be listening to feed back, that’s why I added to a few comments so people understand this is not guaranteed to work for everyone.
