Check out my new book that you can pre-order now. Simplify Vegetable Gardening will be available on 16th Feb 2024. Pre-order now to be the first to get a copy of this book that has all my personal tips. geni.us/SimplifyVegGardening In today's episode of UK Here We Grow. Tony O'Neill shows you how to build a DIY bulk no mess chicken feeder using a plastic dustbin and some old stuff that he has lying around.
The DIY Bulk No Mess Chicken Feeder came about after Tony was searching KZbin for ideas, and happened across another KZbin channel founded by Mark, the channel was called Self Sufficient Me. There Tony saw 2 videos and parts from those video's helped in the design of the DIY Bulk No Mess Chicken Feeder. You will find a link to Mark's channel Self Sufficient Me below. I hope you enjoy this build and visit Mark and Subscribe to his channel. It is well worth the time.

Well done Tony what a great use of recycled materials in the true sense of self-sufficiency and saving costs etc where possible. Your improved design over my bin feeder allows it to hold much more feed (probably about 10kgs more in fact) so that's about double capacity! Thank you for mentioning my channel in your video that was very kind of you also mate. Cheers :)

I've been using a modified "Mark's feeder" for a few month's and I can say it's the best feeder I have ever used, I use a plastic storage bin with a bit of thin ply screwed on the front with holes for the birds, I fill it out side the run and I don't get any food on the ground at all. It will be good to see your one in the next few weeks. Thanks for the video.

I like the fact that the feed stays dry and contained. I purchased feeders and the opening is so low to the group the chicks get it everywhere. Plus purchasing them is so expensive. Terrific video, thanks Tony and thanks Mark...love your videos also, enjoyed watching Self Sufficient me for some time.

I know you posted this years ago but I just had to comment. I love this vid sooo much! I've been researching for over three years now for an affordable DYI bulk feeder and this is by far the coolest design I've seen, so thanks for sharing! Where did you get the pipe and what's the diameter? Also, I'm amazed that this is the first time I've hear that glycerin can keep water from freezing... Wish I found your vid a few months ago, lol. Happen to have any tips on any DIY side roll out nesting box's to keep the rats from stealing eggs? I'm thinking of getting a paint tray and build something around it.

I have the same issue about the feed getting stuck in the middle. I just made a feeder out of a 55 gallon drum with 90 deg 3" PVC. I plan on getting a cone or large funnel to put in the bottom to keep the feed going to the sides.

An easier build might have been to cut 4-8 upside-down U's in the bottom of the inside pipe, then set the inside pipe directly on the cone. This would allow the feed to flow into the bin without messing with those 4 lower bolts. Finally, install only two bolts across from each other at the top of the pipe to keep it in the middle of the bin, and you're done! :)

We have always used an automatic hopper. It's ok for 2-3 weeks for the few I've got and they work fine. I like your version also. Mine are only outside back door so I see my chucks daily anyway. Only got 2 now. Will be getting about 6 new ones spring. going To get a variety this time. Old Speckled Hens lay the best followed by Blue Heather but I want a white one and some different types. Might even get as many as 10. Hope your new year is successful. Happy New Year and keep these vids coming. They're very good.

Absolutely brilliant Tony! I had already built one of Mark's feeders in a 5 gallon bucket, but your improvement of adding the center tube is truly brilliant. I built one almost identical to yours, and with me only having 12 chickens, it lasts about a week or more. Such a time saver, and Marks idea of just letting the chickens be chickens...allowing them to dig for their favorite seed and raking the food about, rather than trying to prevent it, has led to an absolute no mess, no waste feeder. Thank you so much for sharing your idea! I will definitely keep watching your videos to see what your next brilliant idea is! William from Texas

Hello from the desert Southwest of the U.S. Just subscribed after seeing Self Sufficient Me's video on the subject. I don't have a farm, but built my own catfood feeder after watching several KZbin channels. Looking to see if I can improve on it, and just enjoy watching other's farming/gardening videos. So much sand where I live, but hope to start more gardening in future.

Nice job Tony. Is the inner pipe raised above the cone lid. It looked as if it was resting on the cone. I wondered if adding a few slots around the edge of the pipe would help the corn flow? Happy New Year mate!.........Nigel 😄👍🏻

I've use a large 4-6 inch diameter ~5+ ft PVC pipe, a "Y" splitter pipe, 2 "U" pipes, and a cap head. Stores ~8 gallons. The fowl must stick their head way down into the bottom of the U, and eat from there. The grain does not flow out, no waste of feed dropping out, or being wasted. The multiple "U"s allow for separate feeding stations, with no eyeball competitive eating (or aggression) between the fowl. Same designs (smaller models) rabbits; (bigger models) for ducks, geese, and goats.

+UK Here We Grow I use a tin, chimney roof mount attachment, (with a ripple fluted chimney tube, and sloping plate edges), ... Turn upside down, put fluting into PVC pipe, and you have a large, square funnel handling any/all loads of poured-in feed. Otherwise, go hard core, use lower PVC vertical piping, and bolt a huge raised bin container to the stud walls, with a wide open mouth (with closing lid - no feeding the nice) for feed pouring. All are good.

Thank you for this chicken-feeder-upgrade. I do miss the 'padding' that Mark did put in to prevent the chickens from hurting their necks on the more or less sharp edges. I guess you have a reason for that... please tell!
@kerielwatson3197
@kerielwatson3197 4 жыл бұрын
I know this is an old post but I have a theory on why he excluded the padding and an alternative for you. The padding mark used actually occupies quite a bit of space and you'd make it harder for the chooks to get their head between the inner tube and outer wall to get to the feed. The alternative would be some felt or other natural material. Takes up no space but thakes the bite out of the edge
@Freakontheway

Watch the chickens. They know the feed is there somewhere but I think his system has failed as the chickens aren't getting anything to eat. I use a bin but also use sewar pipe elbow (45's) and fill the tub with almost two bags. Works A1

Question. Are you sure a rat couldn't reach up into the feeder. Rats a really good climbers? I've got issues with rats And I've only got 2 hens. I pick up the feed every night and take in doors. But they prob eating the food through the day. My jack Russell is going ballistic lately in the shed. Any feed back would be appreciated atb Gordon
@credenza1
@credenza1 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony. Its always a challenge to get a good feeder. I like the cone idea - very useful. The only additional feature I can think of is an indicator to show how much feed is left - maybe a calibrated dowel sticking out the top, with a flat plate sitting on top of the feed, so that it drops as the feed gets lower. Saves you having to look inside all the time - you could check it from outside the pen. My next feeder will be a combination of your idea and this, which has an interesting solution to the rat problem: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXbWZIqug5eiras,. Cheers and Happy New Year.

Just a couple of questions/suggestions: What are the top bolts function? You could just run two rods, from one side to the other of the bin if it is just to keep the inner container lined up. Second, what are the bottom bolts function? If they are also to keep the inner container lined up over the food deflector you don't need to drill holes into the inner container, you just need to screw them into the outer bin and they will hold the inner container in place. Third, why didn't you line the bottom of the poultry feeding holes in the outer bin like was done in the other video? Fourth, how does that inner food deflector work? is there a space between it and the bottom of the inner container? Comment; from the PVC build videos, they cut notches in the bottom of the inner chamber and set it on the bottom of the pan. I bet if you don't have one of those cone shaped tops, and couldn't figure out how to get one, that would work for you passably well. Keep up the good work, trying new ways to make time stretch further by making work more efficient, smarter not harder :)
@simplifygardening
@simplifygardening 7 жыл бұрын
I used what i had to hand. The bolts work well there was no need to purchase rods. The issue with just cutting notches out of the inner section for the feed to fall through is that there is a dead space in the bottom of the inner feeder that will always have feed as the birds cant reach it. This food would become stale. By using the cone in the bottom it filters the food the the external parts of the container and tge birds can reach all the food. Yes the inner section is raised about an inch above the cone. I have since updated it by using a steel bin instead of plastic but all other features remain and works superbly
