MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
Video of icebox:
Video of Gas Refrigerator:
Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

Great video, for those of you looking to skip to the dirt, go to the 6:30 minute mark. I'm upgrading from the system you mentioned at 5:30 to the 6:30 system. The first one worked fine for our kitchen sink for years but was too high maintenance and got gummed up eventually.

@@thebossoftheswamp I am doing a system similar to yours with a full 55 gallon drum and two half’s following it for the drain field with well-draining and rocky soil, Im wondering if a shower and a sink would be too much water for the system to be able to drain in time or have you hooked one up to a shower yourself?

I have done two full systems here in Chile and they have worked out quite well. Our soil here is very porous and so the water runs in easily. Also they do not have baffles in the septic tanks here which I found disappointing. They typically pump their tanks every two years and call it a day. Also you will see septic systems here just like yours with the same set up and sometimes you will see systems that just drain into a gravel pit that is covered so that the animals do not get into it. Because of the soil being so porous it works fine even for bathroom water or black water. Nice job JC.
@thebossoftheswamp
@thebossoftheswamp 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I wonder why they don't have baffles in the tanks?
@ChileExpatFamily
@ChileExpatFamily 7 жыл бұрын
You know I am not sure. They do put drop pipes in the Inlet and outlet to suck from the half full mark on the tanks as opposed to taking off the top or bottom so there is some hope. Also they use plastic tanks here, mine are 4,000 liters, and they just build concrete block pits here as well that are like bunkers that they just use as tanks. It is not typical for them to have drainage fields here since the soil is so porous. So in one end out the other is all they do. In reality I think that the US makes it too complicated. In south carolina we had clay soil and you would get empaction if you did not do it right here they do not have this problem. No permits here no inspections or licensing. I have seen septic systems in the city on a small lot that work perfectly as well.

You should consider using windshield washer fluid (rather than antifreeze) for your plumbing trap (under the sink). Washer fluid is way less toxic and you can buy it @ a fraction of the cost. It also has a much higher freezing point compared to water..Save $ and the environment bro.
@thebossoftheswamp
@thebossoftheswamp 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion. I appreciate it.
@denisewilson8367
@denisewilson8367 Жыл бұрын
Windshield washer fluid freezes easier than antifreeze does. It contains 50% water or more depending on the brand. The reason for the antifreeze is to remove the water and prevent freezing in the pipes. Windshield washer fluid will freeze and the pipes will break. Stick to the antifreeze, JC.

Just so people watching this will know, you should not configure your sink drain the way yours is. The downpipe coming right after your trap creates a double trap, which can create a siphon effect and pull the water out of your trap. After the trap, you should have a horizontal run of a foot or so before turning down toward the ground.

A friend of mine had to go into the sewer for work. He was dreading it but once he got down there he said it was surprisingly good, outside was freezing cold but inside the sewer was nice and warm, he said that he was expecting it to be absolutely acrid but said that it kind of smelt like flowers and perfume, being at about 8am in the city he deduced that it was 'office chicks' getting ready for work.

Thanks for the video! I'm going to use this idea for my little off-grid shack I'm building. I won't have a toilet in there, so it's just grey water draining. You're full of great ideas! Thanks for the information and inspiration!

Good stuff My first one was a wooden barrel in 1960 In 1967 we replaced that with a larger metal barrel. It is dormant all winter & more so It still works. Brian 76

I'm enjoying all your videos. I'm 70yo and the old ways must not be forgotten. My mom and both grandmas would be horrified at permitting any food particles or grease down a drain. Our dishes were wiped practically clean and stacked before being put into soapy dishwater. Scraps went to the dog or wrapped in newspaper to be put into the garbage to be burned or hauled away. Saved on water and soap. Saved our sewer lines too. Big cities are now contending with vast fatty sewer boogers spreading for several city blocks because everything gets poured down a drain nowadays.
